Mobile Turbine Provides Portable Wind Power

Mobile Wind Turbine.jpg

It may look like some sort of Transformer, but this concept from Pope Design is actually a mobile wind generator. Unlike traditional wind turbines, which are stationary, the Mobile Wind Turbine can be moved around in order to be wherever the wind is the strongest.

Essentially, the concept is simply a turbine on the back of a large truck. It features a hydraulic system that is able to erect the turbine when the truck is in position. The creators say that the mobile turbine could potentially be used to help power temporary settlements, such as camps or military bases. A smaller version could also be used to power schools and small businesses, as a way to utilize wind power without the high costs associated with a permanent wind turbine installation.

Horse Carriage Recycling Carts Pop Up In France

horse and cart recycling.jpg

A number of towns in France are trying to make the act of recycling even more green, by replacing their recycling trucks with horses.

The practice is being used in 60 towns across the country, who are using horses to pull recycling carrying carriages. Not only is the use of horses better for the environment, but it’s also much more practical for many towns that have small, hard to navigate streets. “You can’t turn a waste collection vehicle around here. We used to block streets to traffic and keep waste in open skips,” Jean Baptiste, mayor of Peyrestortes in Southern France, told the Guardian.

For many of the towns, using horses has also served as a way of saving money, as well as raising awareness for recycling programs. The practice is also spreading to other countries around Europe, including Italy, where donkey-drawn recycling carts are being used in Sicily.

Virgin Mobile rolls out Android-based Samsung Intercept: $249 prepaid

Not much of a surprise here, but Virgin Mobile has just officially announced that it’s now offering the Samsung Intercept — the carrier’s first Android handset. Running a reasonable $249 prepaid — and exclusive to Target for the next few weeks — the phone boasts a 3.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, a sliding QWERTY keypad, a 3.2-megapixel camera, and all the basic Android amenities you’d expect (it’s shipping with Android 2.1). Of course, that $249 is quite a bit higher than the $99 it demands on-contract on Sprint, but Virgin promises you’ll save 25 percent or more in the long-run if you pair the phone with one of its prepaid plans, which run between $25 and $60 per month. Hit up the gallery below for a couple of bigger images, and head on past the break for the full press release.

‘Toasted skin syndrome’ caused by extreme laptop heat say researchers

In a new study from the medical journal Pediatrics, researchers confirm what you’ve known all along: laptop heat is the greatest threat to mankind’s continued survival on this planet. In the report, researchers collected and analyzed various tales of woe from youngsters who’d been treated for exposure to extreme laptop heat, and discovered that prolonged periods of use can lead to a condition horrifically dubbed “toasted skin syndrome.” The effects of gaming (or, uh, studying) too hard can leave skin in a mottled, sponge-like state, can cause permanent skin darkening, and generally makes you less attractive to the opposite sex — from a lap perspective. When viewed under a microscope, the damage is similar to that of long-term sun exposure, and though unlikely in the case of laptop heat, prolonged skin irritation is linked to increased rates of some forms of skin cancer. Researchers suggest placing a carrying case or “heat shield” between you and your computer if you’ve got to keep it in your lap. At Engadget, the entire team has been issued Kevlar short-shorts — we suggest you take similar precautions.

Microsoft brings Windows 7 Family Pack back: $150 covers three PCs

Missed out on the limited run of Windows 7 Family Packs back in July of last year? You aren’t alone. In fact, it sold out in record time, and now that you’ve bitten the bullet and ponied up for a trio of retail copies, the folks in Redmond are having a laugh at your impatience. As a way to celebrate the nearing of the one year Windows 7 anniversary, Microsoft is now re-offering the Win7 Family Pack on its online store. As a refresher, $149.99 allows for Windows 7 Home Premium to be installed on up to three PCs, but Microsoft warns that the offer stands only while supplies last. Oh, and if you live outside of America? Look for your opportunity to arise on October 22nd.

Update: Amazon has it for just $140. Thanks, Stephen!

Update 2: Best Buy also has copies… while supplies last!

pSummer is officially over and no one is happier with the sun’s absence more than The 404 Podcast. Fall also happens to be the ideal season for Renaissance faires, and this weekend I checked out a href=”http://www.whidc.org/home.html”Medieval Festival at Fort Tryon Park/a up by the Cloisters./p

pSwitching gears to the only tech story in the rundown, Toshiba introduces the a title=”Toshiba shows off glasses-free 3D TVs — Monday, Oct 4, 2010″ href=”http://news.cnet.com/8301-13506_3-20018421-17.html”Regza 12GL1/a, the first line of 3DTVs that don’t require a set of cheesy glasses. The 20-inch flat-panel display provides “nine different perspectives of each single 2D frame,” which are then “superimposed…to create a three-dimension impression of the image.”/p

pDon’t worry, we’re totally confused by that quote as well, but we also think it’s really funny that you have to sit 3 feet away to get the 3D effect. The Toshiba 20GL1 will be for sale in Japan later this year for $2,900, so now might be a good time to take out that second mortgage./p
