Qualcomm’s Mirasol displays pushed back to 2011, Pixel Qi breathes a sigh

We don’t know a soul who doesn’t want a low-power color display that looks great in bright sunlight, but nobody’s really stepped up to the plate — not Pixel Qi, whose awesome dual-mode display sold out in a single day, and not Qualcomm, whose Mirasol has similarly been the subject of delay after delay. We’re sorry to say that the latter has been bumped back yet again, as GigaOM reports the panels won’t arrive till early 2011, right alongside their rival technology. Sure, competition’s always great for pricing, but still — what a shame.

AT&T and T-Mobile will have cell coverage in NYC subway stations

New York City promised subway cell phone coverage five years ago, and Transit Wireless took up the $46 million banner in 2007 — now, three years and a friendly British jab later, at least two major carriers are convinced it’s actually going to happen. Bloomberg reports that T-Mobile and AT&T have both signed ten-year agreements to let their customers access Transit’s subterranean wireless network, which should cover 277 NYC stations in the years to come. Critically, we’re still talking about coverage at just the stations, not actually on board — there’s till no word on when we can expect the tubes themselves to boost our sorry reception bars.

Nintendo 3DS might update itself over WiFi, still won’t cook you breakfast

Nintendo 3DS might update itself over WiFi, still won't cook you breakfast

Careful, gamers on the go: your next handheld might be a hotspot hunter. Along with the “tag mode” Nintendo revealed earlier this week, where the 3DS can seek out other similarly depth-endowed handhelds and exchange information automatically, comes a system called SpotPass, which enables connecting to any open hotspots — even while sleeping like a baby. The purpose was ostensibly for passive downloading of game content and the like but, according to Nintendo prez Satoru Iwata, the company is pondering lumping automatic firmware updates into the mix. This would mean the 3DS would re-flash itself even while in suspended animation, in theory keeping software pirates and firmware buccaneers on their toes. As serious gamers who only purchase legal software (twice, just to be safe) this seems like a reasonable enough thing to do — assuming we don’t get any bogus firmware sneaking onto our $300 handhelds.

Priceline’s New “Sunshine Guaranteed” Promotion

This article was written on June 05, 2008 by CyberNet.

Summer is just about here which means warmth and sun, long days, and maybe even a vacation. When you plan a vacation, most people hope for days that are free from rain and storms so that they can enjoy whatever it is that they’re doing whether it’s lying out on a beach or sightseeing. So what happens when someone’s well-deserved vacation is interrupted with rain? Well, usually nothing. You just have to suck-it-up and deal with the fact that no one has control over mother nature, unless you booked your vacation through Priceline.

Priceline has been around for 10 years now and to celebrate they’re having a “Dealstravaganza!” One of their deals is a Sunshine Guarantee where if you book your summer vacation and it rains, you’ll get all of your money back. This offer is good from June 2nd until July 17th, and the traveling has to occur between July 1st and September 7th. Not a bad deal, huh?

priceline sunshine guarantee.png

Of course there are a few “guidelines” that they have. It has to rain at least a half of an inch or more on at least half of your vacation days in order for you to receive a refund. For an 8 day vacation, it’ll have to rain for at least four days, or for a 6 day vacation it has to rain for at least 3 days. They’re not charging you a penny for this coverage which means you have absolutely nothing to lose if you were planning to book a vacation anyways.

Powering the Sunshine Guarantee is a service called WeatherBill which “provides affordable and easy-to-use weather coverage to protect revenue and control costs for the millions of businesses impacted by the weather.” Each Priceline customer taking advantage of the guarantee will get their own customized link so that they can track how much rain has fallen at their destination, online.

Priceline has probably looked at enough weather data thanks to WeatherBill to know that chances are, in most places, there won’t be at least a half of an inch of rain that falls for several days in a week’s time. This means they wouldn’t have to fork out too many refunds. The deal sounds enticing enough though that it just might lure-in more customers.

Kid’s Walker fulfills your child’s dream of piloting a kickass robot suit (video)

Four years ago Sakakibara Kikai brought us a $300,000 real-life BattleMech, and the company hasn’t sat idle since then — last December, it put the final touches on a significantly smaller exoskeleton designed specifically for children. The Kid’s Walker stands just over five feet tall and weighs four hundred pounds, and though the gasoline-powered creature doesn’t exactly walk, its wheeled feet definitely stroll around. The Japanese company told Gizmag the suit isn’t presently for sale — just rentals for now — but would probably cost about 1.8 million yen (around $21,600) should it come to market. If you ask us, that’s a small price to pay; everyone knows it’s always the young mecha pilots that end up saving the world. Video after the break.

Samsung Captivate gets unofficial Froyo build, with Flash 10.1, mobile hotspot and more (video)

Now that your AT&T-locked Samsung Galaxy S can occasionally find satellites, you’re probably hoping that the carrier kicks out some creamy Froyo as well, and it looks like that day isn’t far away — an unofficial but seemingly feature-complete Android 2.2 build is available for the Captivate right now. The faithful fiends at xda-developers have got build UCJI6 ready for download, which brings a mobile hotspot, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, the JIT compiler, Media Hub support, and a host of UI tweaks to boot. Instructions are available at the links below to walk you through the process, assuming you’ve already got root, have backed up all your files and are willing to take the risks in case this leaked build isn’t as official as it seems. See a video walkthrough of the new software right after the break.

HTC Merge / Lexicon prototype previewed, 800MHz processor produces sweet scores (video)

Here’s a little something to make your weekend fly by — Android Central scored a hands-on look at Verizon’s dual-mode CDMA / GSM worldphone, the HTC Merge (or is that Lexikon?) and it’s looking like one hell of a handset. Though the prototype’s Android 2.2 build is saddled with HTC Sense and Bing for search, the hardware’s reportedly superb, with a “clicky and responsive and very well spaced” slide-out QWERTY keyboard with no Desire Z hinge nonsense, and a weighty, solid feel. There’s also a 5 megapixel shooter that does 720p video, a likely 2GB of on-board storage and 512MB of RAM, not to mention an 800MHz processor that’ll surely help derail the megahertz myth with superb benchmark scores. See it pull a 1,500 in Quadrant after the break, and start dropping those nickels into your piggy bank.

Kiss releases LED HDTV, because it’s criminal to view Paul’s Starchild makeup any other way

Legendary rockers are releasing officially-licensed LED HDTVs, available in 55-, 46-, 42-, and 32-inch (aka “Mini Kiss,” to no one else but the Engadget staff) variants, priced between $818.88 and $1,988.88 (and unless we’re mistaken by the wording, buying the 55-inch model also nets you a 32-incher) and on sale now online / in-store mid-November. Each set has the Kiss logo emblazoned on each bottom corner, and you’ll be rocked — nay, rawked — by eight seconds of the band’s imagery every time you turn it on. The TVs are produced by Roundtable Concepts and specs include… wait, you’ve already made up your mind, haven’t you? Well, alright, then, our job here is done. One more picture after the break.

Upcoming Galaxy GeForce GTX 460 card to support WHDI streaming courtesy of Amimon

Most of what we’re seeing on the WHDI front has to do with getting basic HD video playback off of the laptop or out of the den and onto the TV, but video games are people too — don’t they deserve the same treatment? Galaxy seems to think so, and it’s building Amimon’s WHDI tech into its upcoming Galaxy GeForce GTX 460 WHDI Edition video card. A receiver adapter for plugging into your TV is of course included, and perhaps the mixed incentive of Blu-ray and DRM’d content streaming (WHDI is HDCP 2.0 compatible) and 1080p 60fps big screen shoot-em-ups will be exactly what PC gaming needs to sneak into the living room. We doubt it, but we appreciate the effort all the same. The card ships in October for an undisclosed, totally radical price.
