Eigenharp controls WiFi lamp with a little Arduino assistance (video)

We’ve already seen what the Eigenharp (and smaller Eigenharp Pico) can do on its own but, as the folks from Studio Imaginaire have now shown, that’s only just the beginning of what’s possible. With a little help from the oh-so-versatile Arduino, they’ve paired the instrument with a WiFi-enabled RGB lamp that — you guessed it — changes colors when you play the Eigenharp. Ready for an audio-visual feast? Turn down the lights and head on past the break.

SlingPlayer for Windows Phone 7 demoed, coming soon (video)

That WP7 third party apposphere just got a nice boost from SlingPlayer, which has announced its intention to soon be present and accounted for on Microsoft’s new platform. What we’ve got today is a quick teaser video showing off the live TV streaming capabilities under Windows Phone 7, along with the remote set-top box controls and a switch for turning the stream’s quality up. Sling Media promises up to four times the resolution available on previous Windows Mobile versions and draws a launch window around the woolly concept of “soon.” See the moving pictures after the break.

AT&T announces pay-as-you-go international data packages for laptops

It may not be a substitute for an international MiFi rental service, but AT&T is now at least offering a few more options to keep travelers’ laptops connected around the globe. The carrier has just announced a range of new pay-as-you-go international data packages as part of its AT&T DataConnect Pass Global service, which are available in 30-day session increments and provide coverage in more than a hundred countries. Look for them to start at $24.99 for a 20MB package and top out at $199.99 for 200MB. Head on past the break for the full press release.

Tachyon announces 720p Tachyon XC HD helmet cam, excites us with a Picatinny rifle mount (video)

Tachyon announces 720p Tachyon XC HD helmet cam, excites us with a Picatinny rifle mount (video)

Iron sights? Only for newbs. Holo sights? Much nicer — at least until someone pulls an EMP. Picatinny-mounted camera? Not something you’re going to find in Call of Duty, soldier, but soon something you can get for real courtesy of Tachyon. That company was the first to offer a consumer-friendly(ish) 3D POV experience by turning a pair of their cameras into sort of Siamese affair, and now it’s enabling hunters, soldiers, officers of the law, and anybody who likes shooting stuff to get an up-close recording of exactly what the heck they’re shootin’ at. When we reviewed those 3D cameras we weren’t exactly smitten with the VGA quality, but hopefully the 720p sensor in the new Tachyon XC HD tackles that. It’s built into the same shell that struck us as being hugely durable before, and now it’s even more so, rated waterproof to 100 feet. The new camera will set you back $179, matching GoPro’s recent HD Hero 960, while that Picatinny rail mount is $27 — unless you’re a member of law enforcement or the military, in which case it’ll be free. Full details in the PR below, as is a fun video of a little GunCam action.

Netflix ‘now primarily a streaming company,’ could offer DVD-less plan this year

It seems like just yesterday we were celebrating Netflix’s 2 billionth disc sent, but in announcing the company’s Q4 financial results, CEO Reed Hastings called his baby “primarily a streaming company that also offers DVD-by-mail.” Other notes include an indication that a streaming only plan for US customers, mirroring its offering in Canada, currently in limited testing could become widely available later in the fourth quarter of this year, with a potential that “pure streaming” could become the core package for Netflix going forward while DVDs might require a premium service charge like Blu-ray does now. So what comes next? If all goes according to plan, expansion beyond North America in late 2011, continuing to add more streaming content and improving the UI on other devices.

Yahoo! Releases New Toolbar For IE And Firefox — IE Has Tabs!

Yahoo! Releases New Toolbar For IE And Firefox -- IE Has Tabs!

Not that I am a big fan of the Yahoo! Toolbar, but I do know there are a lot of people out there that use it. Anyways, they have updated it and it does look like it has a nice feature set now. Similar to the MSN Toolbar it now has tabs for Internet Explorer 5 & 6. Unfortunately the Firefox version does not handle tabs ( :) ). Here is the complete list of updates:

On the IE front we’ve added support for tabbed browsing (yay!). The latest release (v 6.3) now includes the ability to use tabbed browsing from within Internet Explorer 5 and 6 so you can tab to your heart’s content in advance of the Internet Explorer 7 release.

On the Firefox side, we just released version 1.1.1 for all our supported counties. This improves a few things you’ve told us about with bookmarks, mail alerts, and Anti Spy, among other things.

Deliciousness
Speaking of changes, you must have heard about del.icio.us by now! People use del.icio.us to save and share web favorites. We’ve just created a del.icio.us button for our US users. You add it to your IE or Firefox toolbar to get easy access to your del.icio.us account from anywhere on the web. If you already have toolbar installed, you can add it with a click, otherwise, find it on the Add/Edit Buttons page in the “Personal Tools” section.

Dell XPS resurrected with NVIDIA graphics, HD webcams and JBL audio

It’s baaack. Okay, to be fair Dell’s XPS brand never really went away — there’s been the Studio XPS and Adamo XPS — but as of today, the company’s refocusing its efforts and bringing back the tried and true multimedia laptop brand. Just like we’d heard, the new 14-,15.6-, and 17-inch machines will be available across the board with NVIDIA GeForce 400M GPUs (with Optimus / 3D Play support) and Core i5 / i7 processor options, but there’s more to these than just internal oomph — it’ll be one of the first laptops to ship with a Skype-certified HD webcam and they’re also equipped with high-fidelity JBL speakers. In terms of aesthetics, the machines pull in some styling from the new Inspirons with the wider battery base, however, instead of plastic, the lids are coated in anodized aluminum. (Of course, Dell wouldn’t be Dell without making the models available with Design Studio customization options — aka with crazy pattern options.) So, what’s the deal with pricing? The entry level systems — the $899 XPS 14, $849 XPS 15, and $949 XPS 17 — are all configured with Intel Core i5 460M processors, 1GB NVIDIA 420M graphics, 500GB 7,200rpm hard drives, 4GB of RAM and pack Intel WiDi. That’s not too shabby, but, of course, you’ll be able to configure ’em all with Blu-ray drives, more storage, memory, etc. Our review unit just arrived so expect a full work-up of the 14-inch system soon, but until then we leave you with the images and press release below.

HTC 7 Mozart review

Out of all the Windows Phone 7 launch partners, HTC’s obviously been the most hard-working kid in Mr. Ballmer’s sculpture class. So here’s the question: which of the five launch devices is the Taiwanese company’s best work? Well, there’s no such thing as a perfect phone, but we dare say the 7 Mozart’s the most stylish out of the lot. Not convinced? Flip the phone around and you’ll see its two main selling points: its aluminum unibody construction (as applied on the Nexus One and Legend), and its 8 megapixel camera with Xenon flash (as opposed to 5 megapixels with LED flash on the other WP7 devices). Will these goodies suffice to win WP7 fanatics over? Join us after the break to find out.

This review is primarily of the HTC 7 Mozart hardware. Check out our full review of Windows Phone 7 for our thoughts on the OS.
