Crave 21: Do robots count? (podcast)

This week on Crave, Donald and Eric go gaga for a robot that sings and dances, provoking the question: does it count as an extramarital affair if the woman in question is made of metal and microchips? Also, we take a look at a cozy Jedi bathrobe that would make a great gift for the man in your life, and Jasmine sings the praises of a stylish gadget bag for the ladies. (Donald, meanwhile, susses out its kid-friendliness.) Then, Old Man Donald goes on a crazy rant inspired by popular mobile game Angry Birds, which enjoyed 2 million downloads in just over two days on the Android platform. Finally, a very special This Is Why You’re Fat probably won’t make you fat at all…but it’s still pretty gross.

Barnes & Noble holding a ‘very special event’ next week

Can you believe it’s almost been a year since the Nook was announced? The reader was first shown to the public on October 20th last year, and started shipping to the public in limited quantities in December. We don’t know if Barnes & Noble is planning a follow-up just yet, but this mysterious invite we just got in the ol’ email inbox might hint at such an occasion. Last year’s event in NY was at a much larger venue, while this year B&N is hoping to cram people into its Union Square store in the area it typically hosts authors for book readings — that could be a hint at something less impressive, or maybe they just wanted to cut costs. Maybe Chairman Leonard Riggio is going to read a book to us! Hopefully it’s a little more exciting than that, and we’ll be sure to tell you all about it either way.

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood Gets ‘Record Number of Preorders’ for Ubisoft

assassins-creed-brotherhood.jpg

Ubisoft isn’t bragging, or anything. The French video game publisher just wanted to let you know that its upcoming title, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, has received more pre-orders than any game in the history of the company.

Ubisoft hasn’t actually issued any preorder numbers, just saying that the title has surpassed all other Ubisoft video game releases in worldwide preorders.” Brotherhood is the third title in the popular action series. Assassin’s Creed 1 and 2 have sold a combined total of 19 million copies, thus far.

Brotherhood is due out on November 18th for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. A PC version of the game is due out next year.

Western Digital Unveils 3TB Caviar Green Hard Drive

Western Digital Caviar Green 3TB Hard DriveIf you’re running a little low on space for all of your music, movies, and photos, or you’re planning on building a NAS to keep all of your files backed up, Western Digital’s new 3TB Caviar Green Hard Drive brings you storage space and energy efficiency all in the same package. The drive is a 5400RPM model, which doesn’t sound that special until you hear it also features four 750 GB platters and WD’s proprietary Advanced Format technology which lets them squeeze every possible GB out of those platters without losing too much to formatting data.

The new 3TB drive is a 3.5-inch model, perfect for desktop systems and external storage arrays. The new drive will set you back $239 list price, but if that’s a little out of your price range Western Digital also offers a 2.5TB version for $189 retail. Both versions are available now from select retailers. You can read more about the announcement at PCMag.com!

PlayStation 3 Owners Get Netflix Streaming Without the Disc

PS3 NetflixYesterday it was the Nintendo Wii, today PlayStation 3 owners are the ones who get to enjoy streaming video from Netflix without leaving their couches, and without having to keep the Netflix disc in their DVD trays. Just fire up your PlayStation 3, head to the XrossMediaBar (XMB,) and you should see the Netflix app there, ready to download.

Once you have it installed on your PS3, the disc will no longer work. You’re free to use it as a Frisbee or a coaster for those drinks you can enjoy now that you don’t have to get up to watch a movie. At least PS3 owners will be able to enjoy streaming video in beautiful 1080p HD with Dolby 5.1 channel surround sound, something Wii owners sadly didn’t get yesterday, but that’s more Nintendo’s problem to solve than Netflix’s.

New Nook coming soon?

Barnes & Noble has sent out a media invite for an event next Tuesday, October 26th. Speculation is that the company will announce a next-generation Nook.

Verizon Wireless Tiered Pricing Plans Coming This Month – Report

verizon_wireless_logo.jpg

Coming soon to a Verizon Wireless handset near you: tiered pricing. According to reports, the new pricing plan is coming in little over a week. Interestingly, if all goes according to the rumors, Verizon may actually hang onto its unlimited data option–of course, if you want it, you’re gonna have to pay.

Engadget’s got the goods from the proverbial anonymous tipster who broke down the various pricing plans. Users will be able to choose from either a $15 for 150MB (with $0.10 / MB over that) or the aforementioned unlimited data plan, which will run $29.99.

Pricing for MiFi and FiveSpot owners is $50 for 5GB and $80 for 10GB–it runs $10 for every GB over that. The USB modem plans, meanwhile, will apparently remain the same.

The above prices only apply to 3D devices. Verizon will apparently announce 4G prices closer to when that network is ready to launch.
