Bicyclist Turns his Head Into a Battery Charger

Are you a bicycling enthusiast? Do you own a special pair of specially-designed biking gloves? Do you hold a vehement hatred towards people who drive cars to destinations two blocks away, and also towards pedestrians who dare tread upon your clearly-demarcated bike lane? Do you feel a sense of accomplishment at having biked through a cold winter night even when public transportation could have cut your travel time in half?

If you answered ‘yes’ to any of these questions, then you my friend, are a biker. And we would like to put you and your protective gear to work saving the planet.

One green-minded biker has created a way to convert all that wind passing over his helmet into electricity. This mobile skull-adorned windmills utilize propellers in order to charge embedded batteries (it takes a two-hour ride to fully-charge). The batteries can then be connected to other devices by USB.

However, this isn’t meant to be just another green gadget, but rather [sic]:

We want to use it as a medium to sensibilise the public for environmental topics and to integrate sustainability topics into the lifestye of young people by creating a positive experience.

Mercedes-Benz’s hydrogen-fueled B-Class F-Cell gets priced at $849 a month

It’s unfortunately not the F800 Style “research vehicle” the company is working on, but those looking to avoid a hybrid or all-electric vehicle in favor of fuel cell technology can now place an order for Mercedes-Benz’s new B-Class F-Cell vehicle. Those orders actually first opened up in October, but the automaker has only just recently revealed the actual cost to customers. That will be $849 a month on a lease-only basis, which may seem a tad high but does include both fuel and insurance (alright, so it’s still high). As you might expect, however, the car won’t exactly be widely available — Mercedes-Benz says the first few will reach “selected” customers by the end of this year, with “at least 70 more” set to become available in the Los Angeles and San Francisco area by 2012. Full press release is after the break.

IE 7 Has Their Own Unique Marketing Plan

IE 7 On The Road

Firefox is definitely known for having some pretty crazy and viral marketing plans so it looks like Microsoft felt like they had to step it up a notch. They are now taking their advertising campaign to the road in hopes of letting the world know about the new Internet Explorer 7!

IE 7 reportedly received 3 million downloads in just the first four days and with Firefox 2 officially being released under 24 hours it makes you wonder how they are doing. The Firefox download counter feed says that there have been 234,680,290 downloads total but I forgot to check what it was at before the new release. :(

I wonder what Mozilla plans to do for a unique marketing campaign to give people a little push to make the switch. I guess the first thing they did do was create some cool new buttons!

Soundproofed Keyboard Cover Has No Reason to Exist

As we get ready for the traditional orgy of consumption that is the Christmas season, our thoughts turn to gifts and, specifically, novelties so unusual and useless that our giftee cannot possibly have one already. Thanko’s Keyboard Quiet Cover completely owns this category.

It’s a thick fabric bag into which you slide your noisy keyboard, thus dulling the rat-a-tat sounds of the clackety mechanical keys. Your hands enter through a gap in the front, and there is a plastic window so you can see what you’re pressing.

And that window is the giveaway. Almost nobody uses a noisy leaf-sprung keyboard anymore, and those that do most certainly know how to touch-type, obviating the need for a plastic window. Hell, most of us use laptops, whose keyboards make almost no sound other than that of soft rubber membranes or scissor-switches being gently depressed by plastic chiclets.

So if you’re pondering that age-old question – what can I buy the (wo)man who has everything? – then know that the correct answer is “nothing”. They already have too much. Please, for once in your life, just stop buying things.

¥2,980, or $36.

Acer Jumps on Android Tablets Bandwagon

Acer, Europe’s favorite budget computer maker, has jumped into the tablet game. Introduced yesterday, and available in April, the 7 and 10-inch tablets will both run the Android OS, and both have the slim body and foolishly long widescreen display we have come to expect since the Galaxy Tab arrived.

The ten-incher has a capacitive multi-touch 1080p screen, Wi-Fi and 3G, HDMI-out, a 5MP rear-facing camera plus a front-facing webcam. This all runs on a dual-core 1GHz processor, and is tucked inside a thin, 13.3mm shell (just over a half-inch). There’s also a gyroscope for gaming.

The 7-inch tablet has a 1280×800 screen but is otherwise the same.

Acer hasn’t said which version of Android the tablets will use, but the assumption is that it will be the made-for-cellphones v2.2 Froyo rather than a purpose-designed tablet Android OS. The most important factor in this race is price, and while nothing is yet confirmed, Acer’s senior vice president Jim Wong said that the tablets will be between $300 and $700. That’s a big “between”: $300 spells success, $700 disaster.

It’s funny that the brand-new tablet market has already turned into a commodity race to the bottom. It’s netbooks 2.0, only with Android instead of Windows XP, and with touch-screens instead of keyboards. If we have learned anything from the iPad it’s that the operating system is the most important part, something that seems to have slipped by Acer and Samsung. When the proper, vertical hardware/software devices from HP (WebOS) and RIM (PlayBook) show up, then the tablet market will heat up.

Criminals constructing ATM skimmers from DAPs

A recent article from Brian Krebs highlights a new trend in ATM skimmers: by using parts from cut-rate audio players and spy cams, criminals are able to construct something called an audio skimmer that records the data from the magnetic strip for later playback. Also included in the device is a miniature spy cam, which captures the user’s PIN. The basic methodology behind the device is nothing new (for instance, it could be found in an issue of Phrack dating back to 1992) although the use of DAPs means that the whole thing is a lot more elegant than it was in the days of the portable cassette recorder. According to a recent report by the European ATM Security Team (EAST), devices of this type have been found in five countries, two of them “major ATM deployers” (with 40,000 active ATMs or more). Please guys, don’t get any ideas. PR from EAST after the break.

Flash Rods’ DeLorean hard drive: $250, 500 jigabytes!

Is a full-size DeLorean (time machine or otherwise) a bit out of your budget? Then you might want to consider Flash Rods’ latest 1:18 scale replica, which not only faithfully reproduces the DeLorean Time Machine (complete with Mr. Fusion reactor from Back to the Future II), but actually packs a 500GB Seagate hard drive inside to give you some justification for actually having it on your desk. Of course, it will cost a considerable premium over a regular 500GB hard drive, but we can certainly think of plenty of worse ways to spend $250.

Flip-Top Dell Inspiron Duo Makes a Terrible Tablet

Dell’s Inspiron Duo is ready to buy. You may remember the clever flip-top netbook from its long gestation period: it can be either a tablet or a laptop or – with an optional dock- a small media center.

The trick is in the lid of this otherwise humdrum machine. The multi-touch panel is suspended within the screen-bezel and spins on its horizontal axis, facing out or in depending on need. The specs are as you’d expect: 1.5GHz Atom N550, 320GB, 10-inch multitouch display, 1.3MP webcam and a pair of USB ports.

The netbook part surely works fine: Dell has gotten pretty good at that. But the tablet part is little more than a gimmick. It’ll work with the installed Windows 7 OS, but not well, unless you have sharp, mouse-pointer-shaped fingers. So Dell has included its Stage interface, which can be used for browsing music, movies and photos. If you want a nice, finger-friendly way to surf the web or send a mail then you’re out of luck.

The biggest problem is the price. As specced, you’ll need to pay $550, plus another $100 for the JBL speaker dock (which also adds ethernet and more USB ports). This computer seems little more than a cynical cash-in, a product trying to get in on the current tablet hotness without actually making a proper tablet.
