Google’s Nexus S Goes on Sale With ‘Half-Assed’ Strategy

Google’s new Nexus S smartphone went on sale Thursday at Best Buy stores for 200 bucks with a two-year contract, a move with poor timing, says an analyst.

That’s because by this time of year, the holiday season, retailers and competing manufacturers have already slashed prices for relatively new Android smartphones to between $0 and $50. (The HTC Droid Incredible, for example, is free with a two-year plan at Best Buy.)

These holiday discounts will make the $200, T-Mobile-compatible Nexus S seem like an unattractive option for the average consumer, explained Tero Kuttinen, a telecom analyst at MKM Partners.

“I don’t know what Google is doing here,” he said. “They do software so well. I don’t understand why they do this hardware strategy in such a half-assed way.”

Google’s hardware strategy with its previous Nexus One smartphone was unsuccessful. The search giant failed to get major carriers such as AT&T and Verizon to subsidize the phone; only T-Mobile played ball. So, the only way non-T-Mobile-subscribers could get the phone was by throwing down $500 for an unlocked version of the device.

Surprise, surprise: The only people willing to spend that much on Google’s Nexus One were nerds like us, and the phone didn’t sell well. Duly, the Nexus One was discontinued. (Wired.com’s Ryan Singel recently told a thorough version of that story.)

The Nexus S seems to have the same story. It’s currently available at Best Buy for $530 unlocked, and for $200 with a T-Mobile plan.

The fact it’s December makes the Nexus S smartphone launch even worse, Kuittinen said, because more powerful Android smartphones will be announced at next month’s Consumer Electronics Show, meaning the Nexus S will quickly be superseded. On top of that, there have been multiple rumors that a Verizon iPhone will be announced January.

“When we get to January, there will be multicore phones and the iPhone on Verizon,” Kuittinen said. “That’s the real competition here, not the phones you see right now. For those reasons, the Nexus S doesn’t really offer any sizzle.”

NASA: Half the Sun Exploded in August. Just FYI. (Video)

What were you doing on August 1st, 2010? Well, if you were the Sun, you would have been experiencing a hemisphere-wide eruption.

Back in August, half of the Sun was rocked by a series of nuclear-fueled explosions that sent shock waves across the stellar surface, shedding billions of tons of charged materials into space over a 28-hour period.

It was a massive event that shattered old ideas about solar activity.

The whole series of explody events was captured in unprecedented detail by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory satellite, giving astronomers new insights into the volatile inner workings of the Sun.

To explain what happened, solar researchers Karel Schrijver and Alan Title spent three months researching the event they have “The Great Eruption.” The entire episode may overturn the notion of solar eruptions as localized events, rather than a body-wide phenomenon.

These findings are more than mere ivory tower musings and may prove significant for researchers who predict solar “space weather,” which has the very real potential to disrupt communications, airlines, and power grids here on Earth.

Fossil Connected watch concept displays vital info from your Android or BlackBerry handset, looks great doing it

Sure, companies haven’t had too much success with connected watches — remember SPOT? But don’t lose hope! The Fossil Connected watch concept shows that at least somebody is still trying to bring wrist-based chronometers into the 21st century. This timepiece is designed to pair with your Android or BlackBerry handset via Bluetooth to display weather, caller ID info, text messages, so on and so forth. And unlike a lot of the watches we see in this space, it actually looks pretty damn good. It remains to be seen exactly when these will make it to market (currently the company is hashing out the concept and “showing them around Silicon Valley,” according to Robert Scoble), but when they do they should sell for around $200. Get a closer look after the break.

Military Considering Solar Powered Tents

Power Shade.jpg

The US military is looking into using solar powered tents to power essential gear. In fact, the military has already created some of these tents, which utilize Flexible Photovoltaics technology, and they have been deployed in places like Afghanistan.

“They are ideal for charging up batteries, making sure your [communications], night vision goggles and computers are powered up. You don’t want a generator on top of a mountain, and you don’t want to have to bring fuel to a generator or haul batteries,” Katherine Hammack, assistant secretary of the Army for installations, energy and environment, explained.

Three different types of tents are being evaluated, capable of generating anywhere from 200 to 800 watts of power. The tents vary in size, but each uses flexible solar panels as a way to gather energy. And while they’re still in the evaluation phase, it looks like the widespread use of these tents is all but assured.

“The technology has reached the point where the testing has shown they [solar-powered tents] are proven,” said Hammack. “Our teams have worked on the inverters and the durability of the systems. The durability of the tent covers has evolved to a point where we would like to see more of them deployed.”

Kinect Hacked for Virtual Sex Acts

kinectsexgame530px.jpg

The future is a sexy, sexy place. You can thank ThriXXX for that–at least in part. The adult entertainment company has hacked everyone’s favorite new Xbox 360 controller for a new, sexy, um, hands-on experience.

The company hacked the Kinect to make it work with its own brand of adult simulation games. At present, the hack only really seems to work with the hands. ThriXXX is working on adding full body support for–well, use your imagination. Or don’t. I mean, you’re at work, for god’s sake.

ThriXXX is offering a patch for an alpha version of the hack early next year. Joystiq has a video of the thing in action. We would have embedded it, but our bosses wouldn’t let us.
