Apple Store in Connecticut Robbed

Greenwich suspect-apple_stores.jpg

A glass door and a store full of high-priced electronics. Sounds like a virtual welcome mat for potential criminals, doesn’t it?

A Greenwich, Connecticut Apple store’s glass door was the latest to get smashed earlier this week. A group of five thieves broke it at around 3 AM yesterday morning, taking tens of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise with them, as they left.

Burglaries have also taken place at Apple stores in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey–the last took place in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. On December 6th, four thieves nabbed iPhones, iPod, and MacBooks in 30 seconds and then left–just in time for the holidays.

Dongle Adds USB, SD and MicroSD to iPad

Apple’s iPad Camera Connection Kit is a wonderful thing, although overpriced at $30. Not only can you use it to inject photos from your camera direct into the tablet’s brain, you can also hook up all manner of USB peripherals, from keyboards to microphones to thumb-drives.

MIC Gadget’s 3-in-1 adapter does all this, and more. It combines Apple’s two small, easy-to-lose widgets into one slightly larger, slightly harder-to-lose package, putting an SD card reader and USB port into one plastic box. The extra is a micrSD slot, which is actually all but useless: the only way it would work is if your cellphone saves its photos into a standard folder named “DCIM”, which is what will trick the iPad into reading them.

There’s one thing that MIC Gadget’s version had in common with the official Apple version: it costs $30. I’d stick with Apple’s overpriced kit: it works, you only have to carry the part you need and it is built to last. It is also available now, unlike this 3-in-1 solution, which ship after Christmas.

Mark Zuckerberg Named Time’s Person of the Year

Image TIME Person of the Year magazine cover featuring Mark Zuckerberg.jpg

Move over Ben Bernake, Mark Zuckerberg is Time Magazine‘s 2010 Person of the Year. The 26-year-old Facebook founder is the second youngest person to win that title–the youngest was Charles Lindbergh, who at 25 was the first person to win the distinction, back when it was called “Man of the Year.” (It became “Person” back in 1999.)

“[Facebook is] something that is transforming the way we live our lives every day,” The magazine’s managing editor said of the pick. “It’s social engineering, changing the way we relate to each other.”

It’s been a packed year for Zuckeberg, of course–Facebook passed 500 million users (nearly 1/10th of the planet), a fairly unflattering movie was made about his life (which was just nominated for six Golden Globes, incidentally), and he donated a bunch of money to charity.

“Zuckerberg is a warm presence, not a cold one,” Time says in the writeup. “He has a quick smile and doesn’t shy away from eye contact. He thinks fast and talks fast, but he wants you to keep up. He exudes not anger or social anxiety but a weird calm. When you talk to his co-workers, they’re so adamant in their avowals of affection for him and their insistence that you not misconstrue his oddness that you get the impression it’s not just because they want to keep their jobs. People really like him.”

The Tea Party nabbed the runner up position, with WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange taking the third spot. Hamid Karzai and The Chilean Miners rounded out the top with, with Steve Jobs also grabbing an honorable mention.

Kinect meets Swarovski crystals, gaudiness ensues (video)

Hey, you know that Kinect thing that Microsoft recently launched and hasn’t been heard of since? Well, it’s such a boring and useless creation that somebody had to try and spruce it up. Enter DS Styles, with a bag of 5,000 Swarovski crystals and the courage to use them. The result of that coupling has been the (quite literally) unmissable concoction you see above — a Kinect that will blind you first, then record your clumsy reaction for posterity second. And it only costs $632, what a steal!

NES Guitar: The Real Guitar Hero

This amazing hack-job is the NES Guitar, fashioned almost entirely from recycled parts by the appropriately-named Circuitmaster.

The body is, of course, an old SNES console, combined with a reused guitar neck, a new bridge, a single-coil, height-adjustable pickup, a pair of strap buttons, a volume knob and of course a jack for your cable. Inside you won’t find anything much but empty space – Circuitmaster removed the guts of the console so that you, the buyer, can add in your own custom electronics. And if you’re wondering how the thin plastic case of a SNES can possibly be strong enough to keep the strings in tension, then don’t: it doesn’t. The neck and bridge are mounted on a piece of solid oak inside.

The video below shows you how it sounds, which is – honestly – not so good, likely thanks to the lack of sustain given by the flimsy plastic box. That doesn’t make this any less awesome, though.

Circuitmaster has made precisely one of these so far, and availability is currently marked as “sold out”. No surprise, really, when you look at the price tag: a ridiculously low $150 (especially considering that the neck is from Ibanez).

Mark Zuckerberg named Time person of the year, Jesse Eisenberg sadly not listed

Sorry, everybody, you’re not Person of the Year in 2010. For the fourth time in a row someone other than you has won the honor, and this time it’s Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Why? Well, Time says it’s because his creation has “wired together a twelfth of humanity,” but we think a certain highly dramatized blockbuster movie might have something to do with it. Really, it’s not luck the Zuck did that much in 2010, except tell some uncomfortable stories when launching Seamless Messaging. Runners up include Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai, who had another rough year, and Wikileaks’ Julian Assange, who is currently having a rather rough December after shaking up international relations all year long.

Decommissioned Nuclear Plant Overrun with Radioactive Rodents

mitymous.jpg
Workers at a former plutonium production plant in Hanford, Washington are on the hunt for a radioactive mouse after “active” droppings were found in the plant. Earlier this month, workers also trapped a radioactive rabbit on the premises of what The Washington Post has called the nation’s most contaminated nuclear site.

The Hanford site was founded in the 1940s and continued creating weapons grade plutonium throughout the Cold War. Two years ago, the federal government launched a $639 million decontamination plan that is expected to take decades to finish.

Last year, 33 contaminated critters were found in the off-limits facilities. The presence of the nuclear rodents is a hot topic for local residents, however authorities as well as Greenpeace have put out statements saying the rodents themselves are probably not a direct threat to human populations. Several mousetraps have been put in place, but the mice caught so far have not shown traces of contamination.

Apple TV updated to 4.1.1, aims to fix resolution and download problems

See, sometimes dreams do come true. Just days after we asked how you’d tweak the second generation Apple TV, in flies an update that a good many TV owners have been anxiously awaiting. The 4.1.1 update purportedly solves “an issue that causes some high-definition TVs to incorrectly display at 480p,” as well as an issue that “may cause a movie or TV show to be re-downloaded.” It’s pretty obvious that Apple’s aiming to correct a nagging color / banding problem that has been plaguing some owners since day one, but according to users over at Apple Insider‘s forums, it’s not a cure-all solution. A handful of members have stated that their sets — typically using an HDMI-to-DVI adapter — still display incorrect colors after the update. Flip on your own box and get the download started, and let us know if it’s the fix you’ve been after down in comments below.

Make Better Use of Your Mouse’s Scroll Wheel

This article was written on May 02, 2008 by CyberNet.

You know that scroll wheel on your mouse? It’s pretty handy to have when you’re navigating around documents quickly and whatnot. But did you know that there is a lot more that you can use it for other than just scrolling?

An awesome freeware utility called Volumouse will breathe new life into your scroll wheel. As seen in the screenshot above you can configure different uses of the scroll wheel based upon certain criteria. For example, when Windows Media Center or iTunes is focused you can have the scroll wheel adjust the volume levels rather than actually scroll. Alternatively you can have Volumouse adjust the screen brightness or window transparency instead of just the volume.

To make things a little nicer Volumouse will also show a visual indicator whenever you are adjusting one of the various components using your scroll wheel. Features like this can all be configured on a per-rule basis by clicking on the “More” button located at the end of each row.

When it comes down to it this is a pretty incredible app, and I’m left wondering whether there is any other values this could be useful for adjusting? They do have a handful of plugins available on the Volumouse homepage, one of which will let you resize windows using the mouse wheel. Are there any other things you can think of that you would like to change using the scroll wheel?

Note: Volumouse has a version available that doesn’t require installation, but it’s not portable since it uses the Windows Registry to store settings.

DirecTV survey hints at NFL Sunday Ticket on Apple TV, Boxee and Roku players?

Marketing research surveys have proven a good source for yet-to-be-announced information in the past and a recent one by DirecTV may be a good sign for those who prefer their NFL Sunday Ticket over the internet instead of satellite. According to a tipster, some of the questions asking about potential pricing setups indicated the digital version would be available via currently unsupported devices including internet connected Blu-ray players & TVs, “game machines,” Apple TV, Roku and Boxee. Another new wrinkle is a $19.99 per weekend pricing plan for streaming NFL Sunday Ticket access among other options. Currently, Sunday Ticket streams in HD to PCs and a bevy of mobile platforms (even without DirecTV’s TV service), but it’s possible we could see that list expand to several if not all connected TV platforms in the near future — assuming this isn’t just pie in the sky dreaming of course. The NBA, NHL and MLB already play ball with some but not all of the streaming set-top boxes, if the NFL follows them by adding alternate viewing options — assuming a new labor deal is reached and we actually see football played in late 2011 — would it make you more likely to subscribe?
