Meebo Gets Some Competition: Kool IM

It looks like Meebo isn’t going to be the only one in the Online instant messenger arena. Kool IM is amazing similar to Meebo when it comes to features, but I like the interface on Kool IM much more. They condense down all of the logins to a single line and do not combine any messenger types, such as Google Talk and Jabber. This gives the homepage a more slick and streamlined look.

Both sites support connecting to AIM, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, Jabber, and Google Talk. One thing that Meebo does better is that it utilizes the current browser window to display your chat sessions instead of popping open a new window. If you connect to multiple networks each time you login then Meebo is probably the nicer route to go. Meebo seems to be a little more advanced technologically but Kool IM is off to a good start.

Toshiba building new factory to churn out iPhone LCDs, says Nikkei

Word on the street — and by that we mean a Nikkei Business Daily report — is that Toshiba’s dropping a cool 100 billion yen (around $1.2 billion in US currencies) for a new factory in the Ishikawa prefecture, Japan. Its raison d’être? Low-temperature polysilicon LCD panels, primarily for the iPhone (no indication on which version; Apple is said to be investing in a portion of the factory, as well). Construction begins early next year and production is apparently slated to commence in the second half. More than enough time to stockpile unicorn tears for the assembly line.

iPhone Sensation Angry Birds Grabs 50 Million Downloads

The extremely popular iPhone and iPad game Angry Birds has accumulated 50 million users who play it for 200 million minutes a day, according to its maker.

Humongous. How did Angry Birds do it? It hardly seems like luck; if you look at it closely, the game’s success was brilliantly engineered.

The company Rovio hit all the check boxes. Angry Birds has a really sharp style, fits in an accessible game genre and features a physics-based gameplay that creates a ton of different situations to keep the game interesting at various skill levels.

On top of that, it’s priced at an irresistible 99 cents. Plus, the game’s makers regularly add new stages through software updates to keep people talking about Angry Birds (just like Doodle Jump does), which makes it a constant viral sensation. So whenever people buy an iPhone, one of the first apps recommended by friends is Angry Birds. Add that all together and you have a mega hit.

And it’s only going to get bigger. Angry Birds recently soared onto the Android platform, and soon it’s also heading to PCs, Macs, every game console and Facebook, according to Rovio.

Dell ‘Fractal’ workstation designs revealed

Look, we don’t normally get too stoked over workstations, they remind us too much of “work.” Also, “stations.” Still, a chance to see some unreleased workstations from Dell? That actually look pretty sweet? Sure, we’ll go in on that. A tipster found these “Fractal design language” renders just floating helplessly around the internet and forwarded them over. They presumably relate to the upcoming Precision T7600, T5600, and T3600 lines (refreshes for the T7500, T5500, and T3600, respectively). One of Dell’s favorite design houses is responsible for the images, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the final products will look like this. We also don’t know anything about internals, but it seems like a brand new look would fit with those brand new Sandy Bridge chips Intel is about to push out. Oh man, CAD is gonna be so much fun next year.

[Thanks, Stephen F.]

Samsung May Be Planning a $1,000 Luxury Galaxy Tab

There are many things to complain about regarding Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, but the fact that its price is $350 too low is not one of them.

Nevertheless, Samsung plans to release a $1,000, leather-clad edition of its surprisingly popular and well-reviewed Galaxy Tab, according to European reports.

The 7-inch tablet usually goes for about $650 and is currently available in 5 different versions for U.S. customers, depending on which carrier you want it to be compatible with. The new, luxury version will add leather, reports say, and will also come with its own Bluetooth headset — the better for making phone calls without looking like a dork.

Although, we think it might actually be OK to hold a leather-clad tablet up to your head and pretend you are Lindsey Lohan hiding behind a purse.

Samsung had no comment.

Comcast ‘Xcalibur’ test program brings web video, unified search to cable boxes

There’s not a lot of details available yet, but according to the Wall Street Journal, Comcast has begun testing features that rival what Google TV and TiVo are doing in the living room by letting cable set-top boxes access streaming video from the internet. Known to participants in Augusta, Georgia as Spectrum and within the company as Xcalibur it combines a DVR with unified search across cable VOD and the internet, plus social media tie-ins, but does not include a full web browser. So far the available content is described only as “limited,” so we’re going to guess that Netflix isn’t on the menu but with rumors indicating it could launch to other areas in 2011 it could very soon be taking its place as the next Xfinity branded tie-in next to current efforts bringing TV content to iOS , Android and other platforms.

FastAero: Vista-like Transparency (with Blurring) on XP

This article was written on May 24, 2007 by CyberNet.

When we mentioned the Vystal software a month ago I was pretty excited. It was the first solution to come forward which offered Vista-like visual effects in Windows XP. Now there is another one called FastAero (Download Mirror) which hopes to do the same kind of thing, but it looks much more promising.

On FastAero’s homepage you’ll find several downloads available, with the latest claiming to be pretty unstable. I decided to give build 0510 a go (Download Mirror) on my only remaining XP machine, and getting it to run couldn’t have been much simpler since you don’t have to install it.

Unfortunately it didn’t work quite right probably because my graphics card in this machine isn’t the greatest, but I was still able to see the blurring effects in action. There were no borders to the windows though, so I took the liberty of outlining the borders in red so that they were a little easier to see:

I tried multiple versions of FastAero, and the latest one was the best. None of them put the minimize, maximize, and close buttons on the top toolbar for me though. If you do get it to work properly it would look something like this:

I recommend trying it out just for giggles if for nothing else. A new version is expected next month that takes advantage of the Mirror Driver. This will mean that a direct link can be made between the video driver memory and FastAero, effectively bypassing the CPU for much of the processing.

After you get done trying it out leave a comment letting us know how well it worked.

Note: This will not “skin” windows that you currently have open, instead it will only skin windows that are opened after enabling FastAero. And after closing FastAero, it will automatically restore the normal Windows XP borders so there should be no concern with it screwing up the appearance of your operating system.
