Playmate, Baywatch Star Says She Was Singled out by TSA

donna_derrico.jpg

Former Playboy Playmate and Baywatch star Donna D’Errico claims that she was singled out by the TSA for a full body scan based on her looks. The 42-year-old model/actress was flying out of LAX, on the way to Pittsburgh with her 17-year-old son, Rhyan to visit a relative who was on life support.

D’Errico told AOL,

I said I was traveling with my son, motioning to him, and the agent said he was to come long with me as well.I immediately asked why we were having to go through an extra search, and no one else was being made to do so, indicating the long line of other passengers in front of and behind where we had been in line. In a very sarcastic tone, and still holding me by the elbow, the agent responded, ‘Because you caught my eye, and they [pointing to the other passengers] didn’t.’

The actress says she believes that she was singled out for a scan because of the way she looks. Her boyfriend, she adds, wasn’t singled out even though he fits “the stereotypical ‘look’ of a terrorist when his beard has grown in a bit, which it was that evening.”

D’Errico adds that she was not given the option of a pat down–an option she would have take. Instead, she was told to walk into the full body scanner and raise up her arms. Her son, meanwhile, was given both the scan and a pat down.

“After the search, I noticed that the male TSA agent who had pulled me out of line was smiling and whispering with two other TSA agents and glancing at me,” she said. “I was outraged.”

Samsung QX410 review

Just $799? Wait, really? Indeed, it’s quite hard to grasp that the Samsung QX410 costs under $800, and when you hear about what you get for the money, you’ll understand exactly why. The system not only packs some seriously impressive specs — a Core i5 processor, NVIDIA GeForce 310M GPU with Optimus, and a 640GB hard drive – but it’s also got an aluminum lid, flush glass 14-inch display, and is just an inch thick. And on top of all of that, you can stream video to your TV with Intel’s WiDi and get on a fast WiMAX network without an extra dongle. So yeah, on paper it’s a killer deal, but after spending a week with the rig do we still feel the same way? Or do we suggest you keep shaking the piggy bank until you can come up with an extra $200 for the Envy 14 or a Dell XPS 14? Find out in our full review!

Acer Revo 100 now available in UK, slide-out RevoPad and all

We did a bit of a double take when we first saw the press release this morning for the new Acer Revo 100. Sifting through our memory banks (and Engadget archives), we finally remembered: the “Revo 2” with Intel CE4100 shown off earlier this year at IDF. We’re betting this is just a twin and the Intel version is still en route, but for now, the Revo 100’s packing AMD Athlon II Neo dual-core processor with NVIDIA ION graphics, up to 4GB DDR3 SDRAM, Dolby Home Theater v3, Blu-ray drive, 802.11b/g/n, and a multitude of ports including HDMI and two mini-PCI Express card slots for expansion. More interesting, though, is the slide-out RevoPad, which can function as either a multitouch gesture pad or, when activated, a QWERTY keyboard with lit-up keys on the same surface. Software-wise, we’ve got Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and Acer’s new clear.fi media sharing system. When’s it available? Now — at least in the UK. How much? £599.99 including VAT. We’ve dropped Acer a line as to US release details; we’ll let you know what we hear. Press release after the break.

Home automation heats up–will energy services follow?

AT&T acquires home automation company Xanboo, one of a few deals that hints at possible broadband packages that could include security and home energy management.

Verizon CEO: 4G can be a ‘substitute’ for home internet and cable, will accelerate cord cutting

Sometimes, you have to wonder if these CEO types are being paid the big bucks just because they can believe their own outlandish claims. Latest to try and push the boundaries of credulity is Verizon’s Ivan Seidenberg, who told an investor conference that he sees the company’s newly unveiled 4G offering as becoming a “modest substitute” for premium home entertainment services as offered by cable and online streaming companies. He concedes that for now VZW’s new LTE network will be viewed as an addition, rather than a replacement, to our connected world, but, over time, Seidenberg expects that its presence will be enough to convince more people to cut the cord. Perhaps those who’ll find the $50 per 5GB levy easiest to swallow will be people with no cord at all — the folks in rural areas for whom wired broadband isn’t yet an option. As to the rest of us, we’ll just wait until the economics start to look a tiny bit more appealing.

Update: Speaking of economics, Fierce Wireless has another disclosure from the same conference. On the topic of LTE smartphone plans, Ivan said Verizon is still undecided on pricing, but he sees 10GB a month as the “floor of what people will do,” going on to say that Verizon must “hold firm as best we can until the entire environment is mature enough.” Listen to the webcast of his speech at the link below.

Verizon iPhone Would Drop Fewer Calls (Report)

iphone 4 flat.jpg

According to a new report–and a little common sense–the consensus seems to be that a Verizon iPhone would drop fewer phone calls than its AT&T counterpart. Nothing too shocking there, right? I mean, that’s sort of the whole reason so many customers are eagerly awaiting Apple’s rumored January announcement of a Verizon handset.

A Verizon iPhone would actually be bolstered by its own limitations–the fact that the CDMA carrier can’t surf the Web while taking phone calls (unlike AT&T’s GSM technology) means that phone calls are less likely to be dropped due to data clogging the bandwidth.

“One of the things about CDMA is that most CDMA operators are set up to be voice first, data second,” a spokesman for the CDMA Development Group told MSNBC. “If you are browsing a Web page and you get a call coming in, the data will stop and the call will go through.”

Think of it this way: Verizon’s 3G data protocol is called EVDO–that acronym initially stood for Evolution-Data Only, meaning that the service just does data, not calls. There is a separate channel for calls. AT&T’s 3G network, meanwhile, does both.

In the next year, CDMA will be offering “simultaneous voice and data optimization,” according to the CDMA development group. While the chipset will allow users to surf the Web while making calls, data and voice will remain on separate channels, meaning that, at least theoretically, one won’t interfere with the other.

Windows Vista 5472 Released — With New Wallpaper

Windows Vista 5472 Released -- With New Wallpaper

Microsoft has released Windows Vista 5472 to the Technical Beta participants, which means this one is still not available to the general public. The build ID is “5472.5.winmain_idx01.060713-1900″ which means it was just compiled on July 13, so this is a pretty recent version.

The ISO image is still about the same size as it has been in the past: 32-bit is 2,629.0MB and the 64-bit is 3,545.53 MB. The original keys that Microsoft gave out for build 5342 (Beta 2) will still work with this build which can be downloaded from Microsoft Connect (NOTE: you must be a Technical Beta participant to have access to Microsoft Connect).

The image above is a picture of the new Vista wallpaper that is available in 5472. You can download the full-size image (1600 x 1200) by clicking here or on the image above. I think it is the best Vista wallpaper yet.

Visa clears DeviceFidelity’s In2Pay mobile payment microSD card for use in smartphones

No iPhone? No problem. If you’ll recall, we heard back in May that Visa was in cahoots with DeviceFidelity, with the two trumpeting a not-exactly-svelte In2Pay case that would add contactless payment support to Apple’s darling. Today, the rest of the world is finally being taken into consideration. The aforementioned firms have just cleared a new In2Pay microSD solution for use in the real world, with the BlackBerry Bold 9650 and the Samsung Vibrant in particular named as compatible. In theory, it seems that nearly any smartphone with a microSD slot could be ushered into the arena, and Visa itself expects to add additional phone models for use with this technology, “including phones based on the Symbian and Windows operating systems.” This unveiling is happening after a solid 18 months of testing around the globe, but there’s no definitive word on which banks will be offering this to customers. Between this and the sudden interest in NFC, America seems more poised than ever before to slip ever further into an endless pool of debt, and with way less friction than before! We kid, we kid… kind of.

Fold-Flat Office Chair for At-Desk Siestas

I used to think the best way to grab a nap in the office was to lie down on your belly with an arm outstretched towards a spilled box of paperclips, and your feet touching the door. If somebody interrupted your snooze, the door would hit your feet and wake you, and you could pretend you were picking up the clips.

Then I moved to Spain and started working from home, so I can pretty much siesta when and where I like. Now, there is a third way, the fold-flat chair from Thanko.

The chair looks much like any other office chair but, in that drowsy after-lunch hour the back reclines all the way down, and extra leg-supports flip out from under the seat squab. Both these stages can be operated independently, so you can also sit upright with your feet up on the built-in “ottoman”.

Of course, you still have to come up with an reason for sleeping on the job. I always find “I drank to much at lunchtime” to be a fine excuse. The chair, in black leather, will cost you ¥49,800 or $600.

Proverbial Wallet Helps Curb Your Spending

ProvWallet.jpg

What’s one more swipe of the credit card, right? In this digital age, when hardly anyone uses cash anymore, it’s harder to recognize the consequences of each purchase. You don’t feel and see your wallet emptying out. You don’t actually have to count out the bills and hand over your hard-earned cash. Just swipe and your done. The folks over at the MIT Media Lab have created a solution to help you more conscious of the effects of your purchases: the Proverbial Wallet.

The wallet helps you monitor and control your electronic spending by making the consequences of your purchases real. Inside each wallet is a little mechanism that monitors your bank account by communicating with your cellphone over Bluetooth and has a unique way of alerting you about your spending.
There are three models:

The Bumblebee, which buzzes and vibrates with each transaction, making you aware that each time you swipe your card money it taken from your account.
The Mother Bear, which has a hinge that resists opening when you have reached your monthly budget. This wallet is probably only appropriate for serious shopaholics.
And the Peacock, which swells and shrinks depending on the amount of money in your bank account (So your assets will be one display to attract a potential mate, like a peacock’s tail. Get it?).
Video after the jump!
