Limited Time Only: Vista 5728 Available To The Public

This article was written on September 22, 2006 by CyberNet.

Vista Logo This was absolutely shocking to me when I opened my Inbox and an anonymous tipster had sent me an email with the public download page for Vista 5728! I was pretty excited as you could imagine but I’m not sure if I want to go through the whole process of setting my computer up again after getting RC1 all perfect. Well, I say that now but I’m sure tomorrow you could contact me and I’ll be reformatting my computer! ;)

I know I could just do an upgrade (Microsoft recommends that owners of a Toshiba model M400, M4, or M5 do a clean install) but that just doesn’t seem as “clean” to me…and it takes several hours!

Here is what Microsoft has to say about why they decided to release it:

This build (5728) has a number of improvements and updates from RC1, but has not been put through the same internal testing process as RC1 and therefore may be unstable in certain installations. We are making this release available for a limited time only (and only by download) in order to get broad distribution and testing in a variety of PC configurations.

Here is some of the information on the file:
File size: 2622MB
Type: 32-bit
Name: vista_5728.16387.060917-1430_x86fre_client-lrmcfre_en_dvd.iso
Build Number: 5728.16387

Note: Your Beta 2/RC1 product keys will still be valid for this version.

Update:
Even though Microsoft didn’t post a link to the 64-bit version they still placed it on the server. You can download it using this direct link.
Update 2:
Microsoft also allows people to disable the startup sound with this build.
Update 3:
Microsoft has now officially posted the 64-bit build on the download page.

nUbuntu 6.10 Released – For The “Security Aware”

This article was written on November 21, 2006 by CyberNet.

nUbuntu

nUbuntu was just updated today to be based on Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) that was released nearly a month ago. Many of you probably haven’t even heard of nUbuntu and don’t feel bad because I just learned about it a few weeks ago. It is another branch off of Ubuntu but it has several packages pre-installed that are geared towards security aware individuals. I guess that is the polite way to label the target audience because I would probably refer to them as hackers. :)

You can find the list of pre-installed packages here and among them you’ll find wireless cracking software, sniffers, and scanners. Everything that makes a hacker’s, I mean security aware, mind go around. So if you’re itching to crack your neighbor’s wireless WEP key this is the tool you should use for the job. ;)

MSI’s GT680 gaming laptop reviewed: potent at 720p, some battery life too

MSI is calling this GT680R the world’s fastest gaming laptop. Spoiler alert — it’s not — but if you drop $1,650 to nab one starting this week, you’ll certainly be getting some bang for those bucks. Trusted Reviews and Hot Hardware recently got their hands on the first Sandy Bridge-equipped portable monster of a gaming rig, and found the experience quite satisfying on the whole. Though Hot Hardware discovered that the 2.0GHz Core i7-2630QM chip and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460M graphics weren’t quite capable of playable framerates in the most demanding DX11 titles at native 1080p, lowering the resolution to 720 lines usually did the trick, and when it came to raw CPU benchmarks that Core i7 held its own against even last-gen desktop processors with little trouble to speak of. What’s more, equipped with a nine-cell battery Trusted Reviews managed to eke out three hours of life in a basic productivity test, practically unheard of for a laptop of this class, though we suppose you’re not likely to be carrying around this 7.7 pound beast for the sake of portable spreadsheets, eh? Hit up our source links for more details.

Nook Color Gets A Honeycomb Makeover

Photo on 2011-01-28 at 14.18.jpg

Not even a lack of an official OS release will stop the folks at XDA-Developers from their Android hacking. The big news lately? Forum member deeper-blue has gotten the version of Honeycomb from the recently-released SDK preview running on a Nook Color. A pretty impressive feat, given that the Android Open Source Project has yet to put out the full source of the new OS. According to a video posted on the site, hardware acceleration and touchscreen input is working, but almost nothing else is. There aren’t any downloads of the custom firmware posted (which is probably a good thing given the state of the port), but the developer has posted a short video of it running with graphics acceleration on YouTube.

Usually, installing this kind of custom firmware is a very iffy (and warranty-voiding) process, but it should give a little bit of hope to those Nook Color owners hoping for a more official version of the OS to eventually end up on their slates. With the price of the Honeycomb-packing Motorola Xoom rumored to be between $700 and $800, the Nook Color, at $250, would be quite an attractive option for those looking for the first tablet-optimized version of Android without the price tag.

PSA: Change your old Amazon.com password for better security

Amazon’s allegedly got an security flaw where hackers can find your password much easier than they would otherwise, and there’s already a fix in place. But get this — you’ll probably need to change your password for the fix to take effect, if you haven’t already done so in the last couple of years. According to Reddit users, the Amazon.com login system will actually accept any phrase so long as it begins with your password, such as “password123” when the magic word is simply “password” by itself. That apparently makes it that much easier for a computer to guess your password via brute force methods, no matter how counter-intuitive that seems, so if you simply change it immediately — and to something other than “password,” please — you’ll have much sounder dreams.

World of Warcraft Closes 30,000 Accounts for Cheating

This article was written on June 10, 2006 by CyberNet.

World of Warcraft Closes 30,000 Acounts for Cheating

World of Warcraft, the ever popular on-line game that has millions of users has just announced that they have closed 30,000 accounts in the month of May alone due to users who were violating their terms of use policy. Those that were banned included users who were using third-party programs to farm gold and items.

Some of the accounts were closed as a result of tips of suspected cheating being sent to a Hack Team whose job is to investigate such claims. It seems as though the issue of cheating is being taken very seriously despite the monetary losses they may face from banning thousands of users. If you are a World of Warcraft player and have reason to believe that someone is cheating, you may submit an e-mail tip to their Hack Team that can be found here!

Mail Notifications Get Real

img_20100930_205211.jpg

Ever wish real life was more like the Internet? While it might be a while before your cat starts writing its own poorly-spelled captions, one enterprising Copenhagen resident decided to take the concept of email notifications to his real-life mailbox. Using a modified wireless doorbell and some electrical engineering know-how, he set up a device that alerts him on the third floor whenever anyone puts a letter into the ground-floor box. That way, he doesn’t have to run downstairs only to come back up empty-handed.

The system is essentially a switch on the mailbox, so whenever the box is opened, it trips the wireless doorbell, which then sends a signal to a box upstairs, lighting an LED. It’s a pretty cool idea, coupled to what Hack a Day called a “simple circuit”. If you check his blog, you can follow along with his instructions and make your own, if you’re the soldering type.

Homebuilt UAV hunts down hydrogen balloons, shoots firework missiles (video)

Augmented reality
is swell, don’t get us wrong, but it’s no substitute for the real thing — especially when that thing is a badass tricopter equipped with a jury-rigged firework cannon to rain down miniature hell. Swedish R/C enthusiasts built this first-person flying contraption to carry out a single mission — destroy a series of hydrogen-filled balloons — which will hopefully be hard-coded into future automatons too. After all, balloons could serve as an excellent distraction when they inevitably come for you. Still, there’s no need to worry quite yet, so kick back and enjoy the video above while you contemplate humanity’s end.

This Week’s Best YouTube Videos: Shaolin Monks, Lazy Teenage Superheroes, and the Indian Terminator

only won.jpg

One of the best things about Indian films is the way they manage to be hilarious, campy, epic, and awe-inspiring all at the same time. Enthiran, which apparently translates to “Robot,” is a three-hour master work featuring a number of Indian movie stars about a robot who falls in love with a girl but finds himself reprogrammed to kill everything in sight. How can you not possibly want to watch that?
Also making waves on YouTube this week is a slow-motion video of a Shaolin monk throwing a needle – an ordinary needle – through a pane of glass. If you ever wondered whether there was something to all of the movies and lore, watch this and know that yes, in fact, there is. But those two videos just scratch the surface. Hit the jump to see all five.
