Verizon iPhone To Get Unlimited Data Plan – Source

Verizon is apparently quite confident that its network is robust enough to withstand the strain of the iPhone–a marked contrast with AT&T, which has struggled through data usage issues and dropped calls since Apple first began offering its handset exclusively through that carrier in the US, back in 2007.

Verizon, which is widely expected to announce its own version of the Apple handset during a New York City press conference tomorrow, has reportedly been ramping up network infrastructure, in anticipation of the strain it could undergo after offering users the iPhone. According to a source who spoke with The Wall Street Journal, the carrier is confident that its network could withstand such strain.

The carrier has focused much of its efforts on cities like San Francisco and New York, where the prevalence of the iPhone has often been blamed for slowing AT&T to a crawl.

Ford’s Veritek concept gives us an idea of what the company’s future dashboard might look like

Ford's Veritek concept gives us an idea of what the company's future dashboard might look like

Sure, we’re fresh from sampling Ford’s next evolutions of MyFord, the Mobile and AppLink systems, but those are due to start hitting cars in the next months and years. Sometimes it’s fun to look a little further down the road, and that’s what the company’s Veritek concept is doing, giving us a taste of exterior styling to come in the company’s C-segment cars (like the C-MAX), plus a taste of some future innovations in the drivetrain department, most notable being an alternator that boosts its output under braking to provide a regenerative-like effect despite this not being a hybrid.

While the exterior is quite striking — showing clean, sharp, dynamic lines and the impossibly small mirrors of a concept — it’s the interior that caught our eye. Yes, futuristic interiors like these rarely look little like their subsequent production successors, but we can get get some ideas of what Ford is looking at going forward, starting with what looks like an LCD (or possibly OLED) gauge cluster, something that’s increasingly common now. The concept still has MyFord five-way controllers on the steering wheel stalks, but nestled down between the seats and duplicated on the dash is an Audi MMI or iDrive-like jog wheel. Interestingly there’s the silhouette of what can only be an iPhone displayed on the center, perhaps giving an indicator of where the current media is coming from. We’ll see if we can track the thing down on the show floor and find out.

No Pants Subway Ride 2011: Around 3,500 Riders in NYC

No Pants Subway Ride 2011.jpeg

Merry Internet pranksters Improv Everywhere pulled off another successful No Pants Subway ride this weekend. Not quite CES numbers, but according to initial estimates from the group, some 3,500 New Yorkers participated in the event, removing their bottoms and enjoying all that our city’s wonderful public transportation system has to offer–quite the feat, given the fact that it never got any warmer than 32 degrees.

Events were also held in 50 other cities in 24 countries, from chilly Minneapolis to the far more pleasant São Paulo. Video from last year’s event after the jump.

PlayStation Phone captured in the wild, on video

Well, the leaks have been flying fast and furious: the presumed PlayStation Phone has been in the hands of folks for a hot minute, and now a video has popped up showing one lucky hombre playing Resident Evil 2 and Rage Racer on the device. The hardware is apparently on the up and up, although the fact that the titles had to be loaded through ROM Buddy (a third-party Android app for running ROMs) suggests that the software is still being tinkered with. Or that this is all a terrible hoax. That said, it looks like this thing is pretty much a done deal. See for yourself after the break.

[Thanks, Dan]

CES Attendance Back Up, After Two Year Drop

ces_logo.jpeg

After a substantial two-year dip, attendance level estimates for CES 2011 are back up around their 2008 level, a sign perhaps of slow but steady continued economic recovery. Attendance for the country’s largest consumer electronic show took a major tumble in 2009, when they dropped from 141,150 to 113,085.

2010 saw an uptick in those numbers with an initial estimate of around 120,000. The Consumer Electronics Association, the show’s governing body, released initial estimates for 2011, putting attendance at last week’s show at around 140,000–right around the level they were at in 2008.

According to the CEA’s numbers, 30,000 of those attendees came from other countries. Also, some 158,000 CES-themed tweets have been sent since ;ast Monday–a number that seems a touch low, perhaps, at just over a tweet per visitor–I’m sure at least a quarter of those were sent by our own EIC, Lance Ulanoff.

OmniVision’s OV10810 image sensor handles 1080p video recording, 10 megapixel image capture

OmniVision has just let loose its OV10810, hailed as the first native 16:9 CMOS image sensor to enable simultaneous 1080p HD video recording and ten megapixel image captures. The chip is built upon the company’s 1.4-micron OmniBSI pixel architecture, and it’s obviously aimed at digicams, camcorders and higher-end smartphones. Generally speaking, any camcorder that can snag stills on the side does so at a terribly low resolution, but this bantam slab of silicon would obviously serve as a solution. The technobabble’s there after the break if you’re interested, and you can commence waiting for this to make it to your favorite smartphone / camera maker… now.

Eco Printer Uses Erasable Ink

The Eco Printer seems to be based on an invention I came up with around 15 years ago, although as I never told anyone or did anything about it (and my invention used completely different technology), I”ll let it slide. The printer prints onto paper using a special disappearing ink that can be erased by zapping it with UV light. The idea is that you can print things for temporary use and then re-use the paper, over and over again.

It’s a nice idea, promising the advantages of paper but without the environmental costs – even recycling uses resources. But it misses the exact same thing when I was dreaming up re-printable paper back in the 1990s: Paper is useful because of what you do to it after the ink has been laid down. You can scribble and annotate, fold it or tear strips off and rearrange them. These are the things paper does that an LCD screen can’t, and these are precisely the things that will render the paper useless for this particular printer/wiper. It won’t remove your pencil marks for example, or repair creases and tears.

If you’re forced to keep the paper in pristine condition, then you may as well use an iPad.

And what about this magical UV-sensitive ink? Going on the already dizzying prices of regular printer ink, the cost is sure to be terrifying.

Boxee Box firmware gets updated, pulled — still no Netflix and Vudu

Ouch. Over the weekend, Boxee CEO Avner Ronen tweeted that a new firmware was imminent for the Boxee Box, and given that we’d all been led to believe that both Netflix and Vudu support were inbound shortly, the natural expectation was… well, natural. Late last night the company went live with a new build, but it was pulled from existence within a few hours. According to Boxee’s blog post, the new update adds enhancements to control de-interlacing and video filters configuration, support for language selection in subtitle / audio, boosted browser performance and about 812 bug fixes. That’s the good news. The bad news is two threefold: there’s nary a mention of Netflix support, and while the team is just about there with Vudu, it’s also remaining off of the list for this particular update. Moreover, the devs noticed such major issues that the software was yanked from the servers only hours after it was posted, and judging by official comments in the source link below, things still aren’t totally ironed out. Translation? Hold tight for now, tough as it may be.

26,000+ Members Petition Facebook’s News “Feed”

This article was written on September 05, 2006 by CyberNet.

Facebook PetitionIf you haven’t heard by now, the ultra popular social network Facebook (generally for college students) got a pretty major facelift. I logged into my account to find a new Facebook “feed.” Apparently they didn’t want to be left out of the feed frenzy! The last time I checked, there were 26,000 names on the petition to have this feed removed, and it keeps growing! The general consensus with this new debut is that Facebook now crosses the line from “Social Network” to “Stalker’s Paradise.”

Facebook Facelit Petitioned

The news feed looks  something like: “John added ____ to his favorite movies,” or “Susie and Kim are now friends” or “Lisa is now in a relationship” (complete with a heart) or “Dan added new photos” (complete with thumbnails of newly added photos), or “Jeff joined the group– The Croc Hunter, a legend of our time..RIP Steve Irwin.” It is literally a whole page- plus some of stalkish, useless information.

Some of the comments I have seen include “Facebook is the ultimate stalkers dream now.. sick” to “I’m thinking Facebook scares me.” There is even a group called “Students Against Facebook News Feed” with nearly 26,000 members (and counting) who say this is the official petition. In comparison, there is a group titled “Students in favor of Facebook News Feed” with 17 lonely members.

I’m sure there are some people who like every last juicy detail about every so called friend they have on their list. That’s why I think they need to make this an optional feature disabled by default. They’ve gone a little bit far now by making a feed of every single update and change a user makes.  Change can be good, but in this case I think they went a little too far too quickly. They need to take a step back and take the feedback from the millions of users seriously.

Update:
If you’re a member of facebook, you can join this group by searching for “Students against Facebook News Feed (Official Petition to Facebook)” The number of members is growing by the thounsands!
Update 2:
The latest count is 46,473 as of 9:40 central time- only one hour after originally posting this.

Chevy Volt named North American Car of the Year

Chevy Volt named North American Car of the Year

Electric? Hybrid? Series? Parallel? Who cares? The Chevrolet Volt, the very car that helped us flee a soggy and cold Washington D.C. last year, was just named North American Car of the Year at the North American International Auto Show by an independent panel of judges representing major media outlets. It bested other finalists, the Nissan Leaf and the Hyundai Sonata. The Volt has won despite scoring low marks in the swimsuit portion of the competition, but in its acceptance speech the Volt thanked all the little people and indicated it would spend the next 12 months working toward world peace and alternative drivetrain configurations for all.
