One out of every five cellphones sold is a KIRF, says Nokia

When your core business is as wrapped up in emerging markets as Nokia’s is, then you’d better know a little something about KIRFs — those cheap handset clones that our Chinese friends can often stamp out faster than the time it takes for Nokia to ship a handset after its announcement. Nokia executive board member, Esko Aho, says that one out of every five cellphones now sold around the world (primarily in Asia, Latin America, and some parts of Europe) is an illegal or unlicensed clone. We’ve certainly seen more than our share when browsing the Shenzhen markets of China. Gartner claims the number to be even higher than 20 percent. While we poke fun at KIRFs around here for their shoddy software, comically similar branding (Nokla!), and cheapo materials, they’ve clearly become a very serious issue for top-tier cellphone manufacturers. How serious we’ll see on January 27th when Nokia announces its fourth quarter results.

One Case to Fit them All: Apple Redesigns iPhone 4 Bumpers

The old and the new: Original GSM iPhone Bumper case on the left and new universal case on the right

Apple has quietly modified its iPhone 4 Bumper cases to fit the new Verizon iPhone. A difference in the antenna designs for the standard GSM and the new Verizon iPhones meant that the mute switch had been moved very slightly closer to the volume switches on the new model, meaning that precisely-fitting cases like Apple’s own would no longer fit.

The new Bumper elongates the cutout for the muse switch, so it will now fit whatever iPhone 4 you have (or will have, as the Verizon iPhone won’t be available until next month).

The comparison photo above comes from an un-boxing video by YouTube user Alerio.

The bumper product page in the Apple store makes no mention of this redesign, nor should it. In Apple’s mind, and in the minds of everybody who doesn’t read gadget blogs, there is only one iPhone 4.

PALRO robot masters English, will never shut up again (video)

PALRO robot masters English, will never shut up again (video)

When first we saw Fujisoft’s PALRO robot doing its thing we were charmed but, as it didn’t speak English, we had to adore it from afar. No longer. The little critter has obviously mastered our language quite quickly and can be seen below chatting with an even more robotic humanoid about such idle things as the weather, career aspirations, and just how great PALRO is. How great is PALRO? PALRO is really great — but humble. Inside that barrel chest is a full-fledged PC with an Atom Z530 processor, 4GB of flash storage, and an Ubuntu kernel keeping everything in check. It’s available as ever for educational and research institutions for about $3,600, but we’re trying to get one ourselves. If we can get it to type prepare yourselves for many more posts about software based on real Japanese cutting-edge technology.

Lacie Teams Up with French Jeweler for Valentine’s Day Cash-In

Welcome to the inevitable yearly cash-in of Saint Valentine’s Day, a day dedicated to making single people miserable and couples guilty. This year, the romantically-themed object of “desire” is the Galet, a silver pebble which splits open to reveal a 4GB USB stick.

The Galet, which translates variously to pebble, stone, rock and – most curiously – roller in Google translate, is a collaboration between Lacie and French silversmiths Christofle. Christofle takes a metal puck and coats it with silver in a “150 year-old silvering process” and hands it off to Lacie where it is stuffed with electronics, slipped into a plush bag and dropped into a cardboard box.

As USB sticks go, this is certainly a handsome one, but is it really a gift for the love in your life? After all, as fancy as it looks, buying your spousal unit a USB stick is a little like her buying you some expensive face-cream. It’s nice, but you just don’t care. Instead, give her (or him) the $140 you’re just about to waste, and hand her one of your old 4GB thumb-drives a week later.

An that’s it for my traditional Valentine’s Day rant, with just one thing left to say. I will be spending this Valentine’s Day in a high-tech version the same way I have spent almost every Valentine’s Day since I was old enough to buy liquor: at home, alone, with a bottle of Scotch and a copy of the new Playboy iOS app. Who said technology couldn’t be romantic?

Galet product page [Lacie. Thanks, Audra!]

Latest Cydia release lets you easily download that jailbreak again and again

There’s a new iOS coming… eventually, and if you’ve jailbroken your device you know it’s going to get locked up tight again. The latest version of Cydia won’t change that, but getting back to where you left off just got a lot easier. The app has merged with Rock Your Phone and now enables you to sign in using a Google or Facebook account. It will then track your purchases and downloads so that they can be easily applied again. And again. And probably again. There’s also a new rating system and lots of other goodies — but don’t take our word for it.

India’s $35 tablet delay dashes hopes, destroys dreams

College students eagerly awaiting India’s ambitious $35 tablet are going to have to put their dreams on hold — there’s been a delay. Earlier this week, the Times of India reported that the Indian government dropped HCL Technologies, the company responsible for manufacturing the great democratic tablet, for failing to follow through on the 600 million rupee (or $13,198,416) guarantee — apparently a disagreement over production costs is to blame. Last summer, the country’s Human Resource Development Minister, Kapil Sibal, made a number of appearances toting a mockup of the Android-based tablet, and promising a launch date of January 15th. Officials say the project is still on track and should be ready this summer. However, while the government seeks a replacement for HCL, skeptics continue to sound warnings that parts alone will cost more than $35. We’d like to chalk this up to haters hating, but we can’t seem to forget what became of the $10 laptop.

PhraseExpress 6: HTML Formatting & Performance Enhancements

This article was written on December 02, 2008 by CyberNet.

We’ve written about PhraseExpress before because of the fact that it’s a free application for personal use ($50 for commercial users). They are pretty smart giving away their software for home users, because they know once you start using it you’ll want to have it in front of you while you’re at work as well. So if you do happen to be a PhraseExpress user you’ll be pleased to know that version 6 was just released today, and includes some nice improvements:

  • Support for HTML formatting
PhraseExpress now supports Rich Text and HTML-formatted phrases which can include pictures and hyperlinks as well.
  • Up to 10x faster loading time
A new file format reduces the phrase file size by more than 10 times compared to previous versions.
  • Restrict Autotext and Hotkeys to certain applications
The scope of Autotexts and Hotkeys of any phrase can now be restricted to certain programs or excluded from a customizable list of applications.
  • Autocomplete for individual words
The unique text prediction feature which has been introduced in v5 has been significantly improved. Additionally, it also offers to auto-complete single words rather than full sentences only.
  • Multi-language support
PhraseExpress supports Unicode for multi-language phrases but now also offers to switch the keyboard language layout automatically.
  • Automated Email creation
PhraseExpress can now compose an email including html text/bitmaps (Outlook only), file attachement and definition of cc: and bcc:. The body text length is now only limited by Outlook and PhraseExpress can be configured to send the email immediately without need of confirmation.
  • Runs from a USB memory device
PhraseExpress can now be used on a USB memory stick. If running from an USB stick it stores all user and configuration data on the removable device only and leaves no traces on the host PC.

Another free text replacement utility is Texter, and while it isn’t as powerful as PhraseExpress it is definitely a fast and simple tool. Give them both a whirl and see which one works best for you. But remember, PhraseExpress is only free for personal use.

Logitech Wireless Mouse M515 works on sofas for up to two years without recharge, stays lint free

Sure, lots of mice, ok, most mice can be coddled to work on fabric. But it takes a company with a dedicated mousing portfolio the size of Logitech’s to design a mouse specifically for use on the sofa. See, the Logitech Wireless Mouse M515 features a sealed bottom case that lets you mouse around on soft surfaces without snagging. That means it won’t collect bits of fuzz around the sensor when dragging it across the couch, bed, or a trouser-clad thigh. Naturally, it can also be used on more traditional computing surfaces, too. The M515 boasts up to two-years of battery life thanks, in part, to a hand-detection sensor that causes the mouse to sleep anytime it’s not being held. Rounding out the list of features is Logitech’s Hyper-Fast scrolling wheel and Unifying USB micro receiver required for the laptop or home theater PC you wish to control. Look for the M515 to ship to Europe in April for £49.99 — that’s about $80 converted, but you’ll likely find it for a lot less whenever it hits US retail.
