Still waffling over that bank-shattering $4.99 iMovie purchase? We get it. Thankfully, you’ve held out long enough for the free market to come and rescue you (again) — Vimeo has just launched a legitimate alternative into the App Store today with a far, far more luscious price tag: $0.00. The official iOS app checks in at 20.1MB, and offers the ability to upload, manage, edit and watch your videos (as well as those conjured up by others, naturally). It’ll handle edits and uploads for both SD and HD footage, and there’s even support for pausing / resuming uploads, sharing via your favorite social networking website, and a view to statistics — if you’re into that type of narcissistic thing. The app’s up for grabs down in the source link below, and while we’re hearing that some folks are hitting upload snags every so often, we’re sure the v1.0 build will be refreshed in short order. Oh, and for the iPad and Android contingent? Your copy is en route, but a helping of patience is requested.

Looks like not even mighty Google itself is able to resist the charms of a bit of widespread internet shorthand. +1, whether used to uprank an Engadget comment or in freehand writing to signify one’s support / approval of something, is making its way into Google search results. You’ll soon be able to throw a single thumb up on links or ads you find useful, which will then be used to inform your buddies about the value of that site. Recommendations are filtered using a typically complex algorithm intended to make them as relevant as possible, with people within your social circle (i.e. Gtalk buddies and Gmail contacts) getting a higher priority. The new +1 button will start off with English Google search and ads soon, to be followed by more products in Google’s portfolio and potentially more social linkups, such as via Twitter. Clean and constant power is something that we take for granted here in the Americas. Sure, we’ve seen rolling blackouts in California before, and that outage in the Northeast back in 2003 was decidedly uncool, but those are the exception to the norm. Right now many Japanese citizens are dealing with power problems in the wake of the devastating tsunami, but in parts of Russia unreliable power is a decidedly reliable part of day-to-day life.

So, what’s going to happen when a couple-hundred-thousand fans from around the world swoop into Sochi in 2014, along with a flotilla of international media and all the world’s greatest athletes? The Winter Olympics will happen, and the power will flow. It has to, and it will thanks to that unassuming looking shipping container above. It’s being assembled at Ener1‘s facility outside of Indianapolis, and it’s actually a giant battery holding an amazing one megawatt-hour of power. That’s enough to juice 1,000 average homes for an hour, or to act as the mother of all UPS’s. Join us for a look inside and a video show how each of those packs is made.

AT&T is stepping up its game by slashing prices on on smartphones. The Samsung Captivate( $99.99), Blackberry Tourch, Samsung Focus, LG Quantum ($49.99), and Blackberry Curve 3G ($29.99) all have had price drops. 

However, it comes with the standard catch–you have to sign a two-year contract. Tthe good news is that if you sign the contract you get the discounted price right away. No dealing with refunds.

This may well be a result of the T-Mobile merger or Verizon stepping up its game in the smartphone market.
