Ph.D. student subjects advanced robot to dance, embarrassment (video)

Sarcos

This is Sarcos, a highly-advanced robot capable of balancing on his own two legs. He’s also connected to a motion-capture system that allows him to accurately mimic the actions of a human operator. For what grand purpose does his puppet master Benjamin Stephens use these impressive assets? Dancing, of course. Seriously people, they’re going to remember this when the time comes for revolution. Video after the break.

Acer Launches New Research Unit for Tablets and Smartphones

acer-iconia-tab-a500-05-370x370.jpgAcer has already released a tablet and may also have plans to release a smartphone or two, but the latest thing up Acer’s sleeve is the company’s plans to make tablets, along with smartphones, a key in the company. Acer is planning to launch a business unit for tablets and smartphones under the Acer brand.

The new unit will be doing the research and development of the new products. Acer, who appears to be trying to give the brand a makeover, has not released much info beyond the fact that a new business unit is being established.

Here is what the president of Acer, Jim Wong, had to say:

Touch/mobile devices open up a host of new opportunities. They form Acer’s new business and growth engine for the future. To focus on this market, we saw the need to allocate sufficient resources, and devise a new management structure different from the PC business specifically for this line of business

Sony Ericsson slaps Walkman logo on X8, renames it W8

Sony Ericsson W8

Take one Xperia X8, add a dash of color, paint a “W” on it and, voilà, you have the first Walkman phone running Android — the W8. We’re not seeing it on the US Sony Ericsson site yet, but a quick visit to the company’s German page reveals the decidedly low-end specs: a 3-inch, 320 x 480 touchscreen, a 600MHz processor, 168MB of RAM and Android 2.1. The W8 may not recapture the luster the Walkman brand enjoyed in its TPS-L2 heyday, but at least it’ll update your Twitter status. Gallery below.

[Thanks, Rich]

Acer and Nvidia Launch 3D Monitors

500x_3dvisionglasses.jpgAcer is trying to get into more fancy niches by taking a bite into the 3D world. The company is releasing a 3D monitor which will allow users who have computers that can handle 3D to enjoy the experience. However, this is not a glasses-free 3D monitor. You will be required to buy a pair of glasses from Nvidia.

Acer, who does not have the technology for 3D support, had to go to Nvidia who is the only one that has support for it. Thus both companies had to make a deal in order to create the device itself.

The monitors come in two sizes, a 23.6-inch and a 27-inch monitor at $449 and $689, respectively. The glasses required for 3D will cost you $119 a pair.

Latest Kinect Hack: Augmented Reality Tetris

ar-tetris.jpg

You’ve got some of the most sophisticated motion detection technology ever created and a guy who has amazing software hacking skills, and what’s the killer app that comes as a result? Tetris.

A student known on YouTube as Keysosaurus created a Kinect app that lets users put themselves in the middle of a Tetris board. He developed the game to track the movement of a Wii Remote, allowing him to control the classic puzzle game exclusively with motion controls.

It’s not the most visually stunning thing we’ve ever seen, but you can’t deny its “coolness.”

T-Hawk UAV enters Fukushima danger zone, returns with video

We’d love to head on down to Fukushima with a DSLR and some iodide pills, but that’s obviously not going to happen. Sending in a flying robot seems to be the next best thing, though, and that’s exactly what Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) has done. T-Hawk, a US-made MAV (Micro Air Vehicle) commonly used to search for roadside bombs in Iraq, made its Japanese debut last week when it photographed the nuclear plant from above, providing a detailed look at the interior damage a month after iRobot’s visit. Small enough to fit in a (rather large) backpack, officially the T-Hawk is named for the tarantula hawk wasp species, but could just as easily have been named for the T. Hawk Street Fighter character, who also swoops in to attack his opponents from above. As expected, things look pretty nasty at ground zero, so head past the break for a video of the damage.

Toshiba Launches Self-Erasing Hard Drives

Toshiba_Hard_Drive_MK8022GAA_80GB.jpg
Toshiba recently created the perfect hard drive that will allow your data to be safe and still accessible. The MKxx61GSYG Series Hard Disk Drives know when it has been installed in a different machine, which then allows it to erase all of the data and encryption keys as well. Thus,Toshiba claims no one can steal your data.

While this sounds like a good idea, some people will argue that this might be an issue for those who want to use the same hard drive on a new computer. However, Toshiba seems to be marketing this new technology not to home users, but to business users. If that is the case, it could be a life saver for many companies.

The new hard drives have a wide range of sizes starting with a 160GB to 640GB. No price was released or slated date for them to hit retail stores.
