Romney’s Olympic Gaffes, Obama’s Small Business Comments Mean ‘Absolutely Nothing’, Rendell Says

Former Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell (D-Pa.) said Friday that Republican Mitt Romney’s embarrassing gaffes in London this week during his trip to the Summer Olympics won’t make much of a difference in the presidential election, but neither will Obama’s “you didn’t build that” comment.

“All of this is just the battle of the day, which in the summer time, means absolutely nothing,” Rendell told The Huffington Post. “Even Romney’s unbelievable performance in England means absolutely nothing in the end. In the end, it means nothing. It sort of contributes to the view that Romney’s a doofus, but Romney will have three debates and a convention speech to dispel that. Obama will have three debates and a convention speech to look like a leader again.”

“No one is going into a polling place and not vote for Mitt Romney because he insulted the British. I’m serious,” Rendell said.

Hardest Hit Fund Tapped Most By Oregon For States’ Shares

Long a national leader in keeping its populace caffeinated, Oregon can claim bragging rights in another category: spending federal dollars to help its homeowners avoid foreclosure.

As of June 30, Oregon had drawn down $107 million of the $220 million allocated under the Hardest Hit Fund, a $7.6 billion program administered by the Treasury Department that pushes bailout dollars to housing agencies in states especially battered by the foreclosure crisis. Oregon has spent $63 million of the funds it has withdrawn, mostly in the form of no-interest loans to help unemployed homeowners make their mortgage payments, according to state housing officials.

The other 17 states in the program could use a jolt of what Oregon housing officials have been drinking. The fund was set up more than two years ago, but as of March 30, fewer than 50,000 homeowners nationwide had received a no-interest loan or gotten some other kind of mortgage aid under the program. The average state has drawn down just 14 percent of the money made available to it, according to a calculation by The Huffington Post from data included in a report released earlier this week by the special inspector general of the Troubled Asset Relief Program — the government watchdog over the controversial $700 billion bailout fund.

WSJ: Apple, Google reportedly in rival groups to buy Kodak patents

Kodachrome 200 film box

Kodak might be cleared to sell its patents, but it’s likely no fan of the companies lined up to make a deal. The Wall Street Journal‘s best friends, “people familiar with the matter,” assert that Apple and Google are part of separate coalitions hoping to buy the 1,100 patents up for grabs. Apple’s camp supposedly includes Microsoft and controversial patent holder Intellectual Ventures; Google’s team reads more like an Android Justice League, with HTC, LG, Samsung and “patent risk solutions” provider RPX all playing a part. Real or not, there’s still much that’s up in the air. Kodak’s not talking, and even the touted insiders warn both of new challengers and allegiances that could be in flux over the next few days. If there’s meat on this rumor bone, however, it could make the August 8th auction another patent war spectacle rather than a mere ticket back to solvency for Kodak. Break out the popcorn.

Tetris lights: add color to your room

Tetris lightsIf you’re a fan of Tetris and you want to spice up your living room with some new lights, these officially licensed Tetris LED blocks will do the trick. Feature all the shapes you’ve come to know and love over the years, these lamps are even stackable so you can set them up anyway you want (and no, they won’t disappear when you form a complete line). It wasn’t mentioned how the blocks are powered, but they turn on whenever they’re stacked (you need a minimum of two) and you’ll need to disassemble them to turn them off.

A pretty cool product that’s bound to start conversations whenever somebody walks into your room for the first time. The Tetris lights are sold in a set of seven blocks (1 of each shape) for $59.99 on Amazon (out of stock for now) and £29.99 ($47) from Firefox.com. Check out a demo of how the lights work on the Firebox website as well.
