Metropolis Restored: A Sci-Fi Cinematic Masterpiece Is Whole Once Again [Video]

Metropolis is widely considered to be one of the greatest films ever made, telling the tale of class warfare and uprising in a dystopic society that has been spurred by an cyborg fashioned in the likeness of an aristocrat’s dead wife. But the version the vast majority of us had seen was not the original cut that German director Fritz Lang had submitted to studios; rather it was a considerably shortened version that had been slowly restored—but never completed—over the years. Then in 2008, a discovery was made. More »

Dwight Howard Feels ‘Blackmailed’ By Magic, Wants To Be Traded To Brooklyn Nets: Report

That didn’t take long.

NBA free agency may have only started at 12:01 Sunday morning but there were already loads of storylines to follow before Tiger Woods teed off several hours later, including allegations of “blackmail.”

Not surprisingly, center Dwight Howard was a hot topic of conversation as his often absurd relationship with the Orlando Magic took yet another turn. The newest update comes from ESPN’s Chris Broussard, who reported that Howard informed new Magic general manager Rob Hennigan that he wants to be traded to the Brooklyn Nets. That Howard is eying Brooklyn as his destination his hardly new, since he was doing the same before the 2011-12 season began.

Beyonce At The 2012 BET Awards: Star Shines In Lovely Yellow Gown (PHOTOS)

We love when rumors come true–at least in this case.

There was plenty of buzz that Beyonce and Jay-Z might be making an appearance at the 2012 BET awards–but between Jay’s world touring, Bey just finishing up her Atlantic City performances and baby Blue Ivy to consider, we didn’t think the power couple would show up.

But they did! Yipee!

Iris camera concept reinvents blink detection

General camera use may well have been heavily cannibalized by cellphone cameras, but that hasn’t stopped innovative concepts from attempting to rework the way we shoot photos. Iris, by designer Mimi Zou, is just one such unusual approach: rather than anything so mundane as a button to fire off a frame, Iris watches the user just as keenly as it does their subject, activating the shutter-release when they blink.

Now, we’ve seen blink-detection on the other side of the camera, making sure the subjects don’t have their eyes closed when the photo is captured, but Iris’ approach relies on the photographer controlling things with their own eye movements. A blink grabs a picture, while widening or narrowing the eye controls the zoom.

Meanwhile, biometric face recognition systems would identify whoever was in-shot, tagging them automatically. That may sound far-fetched, but Canon already offers point-and-shoots that can spot up to twelve people they’ve been trained to recognize.

Zou envisages both local and WiFi-connected storage being used, though there’s nothing to say that the camera will automatically spot whether you’re suffering from allergies and decide you don’t actually want to fire off fifty shots in rapid succession. As always with these concepts, don’t go looking for them on shelves any time soon, though this is something we’d imagine smartphones with front-facing cameras could actually be coaxed into doing relatively easily with the right app.

BET Awards 2012: Kanye Performs, Wins Best Group With Jay-Z

The BET Awards didn’t begin with a bang but an extended bleep, as the censor police worked overtime during a performance by Kanye West’s G.O.O.D Music group and Samuel L. Jackson and Spike Lee’s parody of Jay-Z and West’s hit song “… In Paris.”

There were extended moments of muted silence as West, Big Sean, Pusha T and 2 Chainz performed “Mercy” (though not all the offending words were bleeped out. Moments later, Jackson, the show’s host, was joined by Lee as they did their rendition of the West-Jay-Z hit, to laughs.

Steve Rosenbaum: Craigslist And My New Sexy Friends (NSFW)

Here’s a tale of how Craigslist has turned a good deed into a somewhat uncomfortable den of iniquity.

Let me start by saying – I love Craigslist. Truly, I do. I have become a regular user – selling old electronics that would otherwise go to waste in a dark closet. When I’m ready to upgrade a laptop, or an iPod, or other gear – I just post it on Craigslist and do a local in-person transaction.

Now, of course – there’s always been a bit of scammy stuff on Craigslist. Folks who want to pay me by Paypal, have me ship it to them or their “son in the army.” Nope. That one never gets me.

Robert Kuttner: Mitigating Merkel’s Mischief

Merkel, characteristically, still opposes any respite for the suffering Greeks. It is up to the rest of Europe to isolate her again so that she can reverse course citing changed circumstances. Nor is Merkel willing to seriously rein in the financial speculation against government bonds that turns moderate budgetary problems into dire crisis. This, too, will take the resolve of wiser leaders. Until German reunification in 1990, there was a delicate balance in the European Union, in which Germany was contained within a broader democratic Europe. Germany was an economic powerhouse, but was appropriately self-restrained politically. Given German history, this was only prudent. With reunification, Germany not only became even more potent economically, but began throwing its weight around politically. As Merkel keeps proving, this was not a good idea. The rest of Europe’s leaders have now restarted the necessary project of containing German influence again, and not a moment too soon.
