YouTube Mobile lets you skip ads now

If there is one irritating thing about YouTube these days (and have been for quite some time already), it would be the presence of ads in some of the videos. Don’t you just hate it when you are hoping to jump straight into the action, only to discover that the video is preceded by an ad? Good thing the desktop version of YouTube allows us to skip those pesky ads, but users of the mobile version are not so lucky – at least until now. As more and more folks watch YouTube videos on the go, the launch of TrueView for mobile could not come at a more timely manner, allowing users to skip ads after the first five seconds.

“Giving viewers choice over ads they watch has led to a better, more engaged viewing experience, benefiting the entire YouTube community of users, advertisers, and content creators. Advertisers only pay when someone chooses to watch the ad, so their budgets go toward the people most interested in what they have to say,” YouTube mentioned in a blog post. That is the way to go, and it remains to be seen just how Google plans to monetize YouTube in a big way.

LG Display is one of the manufacturers for Apple when it comes to displays for their devices, and we have received word that LG Display has begun mass production of an unknown, albeit thinner display, and many people are speculating that this new and thinner display could very well be the same display that sees action in Apple’s upcoming next generation iPhone. Right now, the display’s production schedule is said to remain in line with customers’ product release plans, according to LG’s chief executive. “We just began mass production and we don’t expect any disruption in supplies,” mentioned Han Sang-beom, chief executive of LG Display. Apart from LG Display, Sharp of Japan is also speculated to begin shipping displays meant for the new iPhone sometime from this month onwards.

New iPhone USB cable with smaller dock connector leaked?

I guess with the number of rumors that have circulated concerning the new iPhone which has been deemed to arrive this coming September, it would not hurt at all to have yet another rumor hit the news wires, right? We are talking about a redesigned dock connector that comes in a smaller form factor, and the image above was a photo which circulated on Twitter courtesy of a certain Jack Yao who happens to work at China-based accessory vendor Veister. This particular cable that you see does seem to rely on the alleged port, and there is not much you can view to help you tell the difference between it and an official Apple product, although we are not ruling out the fact that this could very well be a third-party replacement.

The alleged iPhone USB cable does ship with its fair share of FTC markings, resembling a scannable QR code of sorts on the standard USB end. At the other side of the spectrum, we are looking at the smaller dock connector lining up with previous rumors, but we will just have to wait until the official iPhone 5 or new iPhone is released to confirm anything.

Flickr Android app gets updated, touts refreshed UI and camera selection

Flickr Android app gets a muchneeded update, touts refreshed UI and camera selection

Flickr’s Android app has been around for nearly a year and was due for a tune-up to perform like its iOS sibling. First, a retooled UI touts a new navigation menu and the Explore section now does a better job of sorting shots according to nearby location and level of interest. In addition to the aforementioned photo library search, notifications, profile, camera and upload options fill out the rest of the main menu’s tabbed options. Throughout the application, a pull down to refresh function keeps the most recent notifications and uploads at the top of the window. When the camera tab is tapped, you’ll now be prompted to choose your camera or camera app of choice in order to capture the shot. Rounding out the improvements are improved overall search, the ability to edit details / metadata on pictures and HTML content in comments and descriptions. If you’re looking to give the overhauled software a go, hit the source link below to snag it.

HTC denies bailing out on Beats Audio integration

Remember our story earlier this morning concerning whispers of HTC actually throwing in the towel where their involvement with Beats are concerned for future handsets? It seems that this particular bit is a plain old rumor, so those who actually read that with a salt shaker in hand would be pleased to know that HTC is still very much committed to include Beats integration in their upcoming range of smartphones. Below is a statement from Jeff Gordon, Global Online Communications Manager on behalf of HTC reproduced in its full glory.

HTC remains strongly committed to Beats Audio and including their innovation in our devices. Any rumor of HTC no longer integrating Beats Audio into our devices is categorically false.

I guess that puts to bed such a rumor, it is time to move on with everyone else, and there are other juicier iPhone 5 and iPad mini rumors to talk about, no?

EcoXPower charges a smartphone, bicycle headlight and tail light with pedal power

EcoXPower charges a smartphone, bicycle headlight and tail light with pedal power

Bicycle rigs for charging cellphones have lit up our radar before, but now the EcoXPower is being billed as the first device of its kind that can simultaneously juice up LED lights and a smartphone with the power of your pedaling. Packing a headlamp, a red tail light and a lithium-ion rechargeable battery, the contraption attaches to a bike’s front wheel hub with the help of a universal mount. When clamped on, the apparatus’ clutch engages between the velocipede’s spokes so it can generate electricity. A USB adapter cable runs up the two-wheeler’s fork to a water-resistant, touchscreen-friendly case that can house iPhones, Android handsets and “all major GPS devices” perched atop the handlebars. Cyclists yearning to charge their electronics with the dynamo can pick one up for $99.99. Roll past the break for the full press release.
