Final moments tweeted could help solve mystery of Baltimore coal train derailment

Twitter logoThe final words of any person tend to bear the highest importance, especially when that particular person is aware of his or her impending passing. The thing is, death is no respecter of age, religion, creed or preparedness – it can come swiftly and suddenly, as evident in the recent derailed coal train incident in Maryland. Two friends who sent tweets just moments before their tragic passing could possibly be used by investigators as they try to piece together the course of events in order to solve the mystery.

19-year old students Elizabeth Conway Nass and Rose Louese Mayr were actually drinking on top of a railroad bridge in Ellicott City, Maryland, late this Monday night before they returned to college for the new school year. Since then, their respective Twitter accounts have somewhat been deactivated or, perhaps being made private. One of Nass’ final public tweets read, “Drinking on top of the Ellicott City sign with @r0se_petals” while Mayr posted a couple of photos from the vantage point of the bridge. Just minutes after that, the Baltimore-bound train derailed along with its load of coal, resulting in the two young women being buried beneath piles of coal.

HTC Thunderbolt, Droid Incredible 2 go back to the future with leaked Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs

HTC Thunderbolt, Incredible 2 go back to the future with leaked Ice Cream Sandwich ROMs

Looks like some HTC oldies are in store for Android OS goodies — unofficially. Though Verizon’s yet to publicly confirm availability, it does appear Droid Incredible 2 and Thunderbolt owners (like this sorry bastard) are in store for a very real Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade. Two deodexed ROMs based on purported stock 4.0.4 builds have recently hit the forums treating eager and, in the case of that latter LTE handset, beleaguered users to a host of performance tweaks, as well as that Sense 3.6 skin. It should go without saying that you’ll need to be rooted to flash either leak and, as always, the usual warnings apply: backup first and proceed at your own risk. That said, consider this your ticket past the Big Red tape.

Happiness: Study Suggests Large Circle Of Friends Is Key To Well-Being In Midlife

You really can get by with a little help from your friends. A new study of 6,500 Britons found that at age 50, having regular interactions with a wide circle of friends has a significant impact on psychological well-being, and is especially important to the happiness of women.

For men, family is more important to well-being, according to the study, published online in the “Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health.”

Researchers culled data from the British National Child Development Study (NCDS), a longitudinal study that has followed a group of people born in the same week in 1958, starting at age 7. The researchers examined participant surveys collected at age 42, 45 and 50 that included questions about their psychological health and the number of friends and relatives they met up with once a month or more.

Qualcomm teams with LG for S4 Pro quad-core processor action

The folks at Qualcomm have announced that they’ll be collaborating with LG to release their Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core processor to the market quite soon. This “global device” as they’re calling it at the moment will bring a Adreno 320 GPU as well as support for “higher HD resolution displays”. This bit of architecture will work with 4G LTE connectivity and will be popping up in September in Korea first and globally soon thereafter.

This isn’t one whole heck of a lot more information coming with this release of information from Qualcomm and LG, but there’s certainly a lot to look forward to. With the Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor we’ve seen in a variety of devices here in the United States thus far, we’re definitely pumped up. With the Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core benchmarks we’ve seen thus far, there’s no knowing how powerful these LG devices are going to be – big time!

The quad-core CPU Snapdragon S4 Pro processor will be able to work with 4G LTE as well as 3G and of course, global connections galore. As it was with the dual-core version of the S4, so too is it with the Pro, not just multi-core processing power, but imaging powers as well – take photos like a madman! You’ll be able to play games that are more amazing than ever before! You’ll be able to open up so many web browser windows that you’ll be visiting every portal on SlashGear at once – just like you’ve always wanted!

Have a peek at our S4 Pro timeline below to get more details on this quad-core monster coming out soon, very soon!

Wireless Sensor Tags alert you to movement and temperature changes, fit on your keyring

Wireless Sensor Tags alert you to movement and temperature changes, fit on your keyring

There’s plenty of sensor gear around for hobbyists to play with, but not so many polished products for the monitoring-obsessed. Cao Gadgets is attempting to fill that niche with its functionally named Wireless Sensor Tags — small devices which monitor movement and temperature, notifying you if anything’s amiss. A magnetometer registers movement by changes in its orientation, and can inform you of door openings or similar disturbances, while the temperature triggers are based on upper or lower thresholds. The $15 sensors (or $12 if you want three or more) have a battery life that should last several years depending on their setup, but there is one catch — you also need the Tag Manager hub ($50), which plugs into your router via Ethernet. It keeps in frequent contact with any subordinates in its 200-foot range, and if after several attempts it finds one MIA, a warning can be sent in case any of your home guards have walked or fallen asleep. The tags also have inbuilt beepers which can be pinged to track down any rogue possessions they’re partnered with, like your keys.

A lot of thought has been put into micromanaging the tags, which are customizable through web-based, Android or iOS apps, and will send out alerts via email, Twitter, or push notifications on slates and phones (text-to-speech is available if you’re too lazy to read). If you’re into your data, you can also access trigger statistics from the software, complete with graphs. The home monitoring kit is available now, and instead of crashing your browser with too many embeds, we’ve decided to point you to the source below for the half-dozen demo vids.

Nikkei: ITU near recommending NHK’s Super Hi-Vision as official TV standard

NHK Super Hi-Vision at Olympics

We’ve seen NHK preparing its Super Hi-Vision 8K video since time immemorial. Wouldn’t it be nice if the TV broadcast technology was more than just a perpetual research project? If sources for Japan’s Nikkei aren’t dreaming, the International Telecommunication Union is now “likely” to declare the format an official standard for broadcasters and TV makers. Should it go ahead, the UN telecom body would ask the world to rely on Super Hi-Vision as an eventual successor to HDTV and reduce the balkanization of TV standards that we’ve seen in the past. Neither the ITU nor NHK is known to have commented on the claim so far, but NHK isn’t exactly in a rush to get a seal of approval from anyone — widescale test broadcasts aren’t coming until 2020, and production TVs themselves are only just entering a 4K universe.
