HTC Titan receives Windows Phone 7.8 port

About a week ago, we reported that the HTC HD7 had received a beta Windows Phone 7.8 ROM. Well the good news is that if you own the HTC Titan, it seems that there is a Windows Phone 7.8 port available for you to download as well. Of course this is not the official release that Microsoft/HTC will be releasing, but for HTC Titan owners who are feeling slightly miffed over the fact that their phones will not be updated to Windows Phone 8, perhaps this 7.8 port might be able to tide you over until the official release, or when you decide to get a new phone. So if you still have your HTC Titan with you and wouldn’t mind giving this ROM a spin, you can find the download along with additional details on the XDA forums. So, any HTC Titan owners planning to give this a try, or are you planning to wait for the official release?

Samsung Galaxy S3 used to replace car head unit in DIY project

Given that our smartphones these days can probably do a lot more than your radio unit in your car, we guess it’s not surprising that some have turned to using their smartphones as replacement entertainment devices while driving. Granted you should not be driving while watching movies or updating your Twitter/Facebook account, but here’s a very DIY way of turning your smartphone into an entertainment unit as demonstrated by Steve.

Basically what he did was instead of replacing his JVC head unit in his car with a new one, he decided to replace it with his existing Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphone. It did not take a lot of work and we guess anyone can do it with their phones as well. What he did was he modified a standard car charger so that the phone charges while the car’s engine is running, and hooked up the audio out from his phone to the amplifier which he has in his trunk. Granted it’s not the most elegant solution but it works. Steve admits that it could do with some improvement but for now we don’t see why other car owners looking to “modernize” their vehicles can’t follow in his footsteps.

Autographer wearable camera takes the whole taking pictures thing out of taking pictures

Image

Sure, we’ve all got a camera on us at all times, thanks to the prevalence of smartphones and point-and-shoots, but these devices present an issue when it comes to that modern human desire to electronically capture everything that happens everywhere ever: having to actually take the pictures. That’s why the unsettlingly giddily-named OMG Life is working to unleash the Autographer, a hands-free, wearable camera that promises to take “thousands of photographs a day” via its wearable lens. Just drape it on your person and it will uses its six on-board sensors (GPS, color, accelerometer, motion detector, magnetometer and thermometer) to determine the right moment to snap one of its unwieldy volume of images. Says the company,

For instance, Autographer might capture an image when the wearer speeds up as they run for the bus, moves from a warm pub to a snowy street or turns around to greet a friend.

Also, you know, stuff like your wedding and the birth of your child. The camera’s got a five-megapixel sensor, OLED display, 8GB of on-board storage and built-in Bluetooth for sharing those pictures. The company’s currently aiming for a November release, just in time for capturing every single moment of the holiday season. In the meantime, the press info is after the break.

Foxconn factory opens back up after yesterday’s brawl

We mentioned yesterday that a massive brawl broke out in a Foxconn factory in China that involved about 2000 workers. The massive fight reportedly injured about 40 people and stemmed from some sort of personal dispute between workers and a restaurant owner according to early reports. The Foxconn plant was closed because of the massive fight.

The factory has now reopened with production set to begin again. Foxconn and local authorities say that the cause of the fight is still under investigation. The brawl comes at a time when people in China have been acting out, at times violently, against Japanese companies.

Foxconn has so far declined to say whether the closed factory will affect availability for the iPhone 5. While we heard yesterday that the fight was a result of the disagreement between a restaurant owner and workers, new reports indicate that the violence may have started between a factory worker and a guard at the facility.

One source cited by the AP said that the violence was the result of workers who are angry at how they’re treated by Foxconn security guards and managers. Foxconn has been the source of investigations before over unfair labor practices. Workers say that they have no way to voice grievances hinting that violence such as what occurred this week is their only option.

“Foxconn, some supervisors, and security guards never respect us,” said the employee, who asked not to be identified by name. “We all have this anger toward them and they (the workers) wanted to destroy things to release this anger.”

More Blackberry 10 screenshots have been spotted

We’re sure that many Blackberry loyalists out there are eagerly waiting for RIM to release Blackberry 10. While a specific date has yet to be given, the folks at blackberryitalia.it have managed to get their hands on some screenshots from the upcoming platform. It doesn’t reveal much but we get a look at the loading screen of RIM’s Maps app, which hopefully will do a better job compared to Apple’s iOS 6 Maps, connectivity options, some menus and also a screenshot of what appears to be a HTML5 browser test in which the Blackberry 10 device scored a pretty impressive 486, making it 14 points shy of 500 marks which is the maximum a browser can score. It’s hard to tell if Blackberry 10 will be an impressive platform that will allow it to compete against iOS and Android, but for Blackberry loyalists looking for a full touchscreen experience but with a unique Blackberry feel to it, it certainly looks like Blackberry 10 is headed in the right direction. You can head on over to blackberryitalia.it for the rest of the screenshots.

World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria is now live

Good news World of Warcraft players, in case you did not already know, the Mists of Pandaria expansion has been released! For those who pre-purchased the game, you guys should have no trouble playing the new expansion, barring any server issues of course. Given that there will probably be a rush to get into servers and roll the new Pandaren characters, we expect that some server hiccups, lag and disconnections might be a common problem until things start to balance out. For those who are hearing this for the first time, the Mists of Pandaria expansion is the fourth World of Warcraft expansion and it will introduce the new neutral Pandaren race, a new Monk class along with a host of new features while raising the level cap to 90. If this sounds like the expansion you’ve been waiting for, you can head on over to Blizzard’s World of Warcraft website to learn more about the game and where you will also be able to buy the game in either a standard edition, a Digital Deluxe edition or the Collector’s Edition which will only be available in physical copy via retailers.

Nikon D5100 might be discontinued

If you were planning on getting your hands on the Nikon D5100, you might want to move fast as according to reports, it seems that Nikon Germany has sent out emails to retailers stating that the Nikon D5100 was no longer available for order. To be more specific, they used the word “abkundigung” which apparently translates to “discontinuation”. However on the Nikon website, it does not state that the D5100 has been discontinued, so either we’re looking at an email interpreted wrongly, or Nikon’s website has yet to be updated, or possibly the discontinuation has not taken effect just yet. Either way if the D5100 has been in your sights, perhaps now might be a good time to get your hands on one before retailers run out of them.

The application offers Quick, Guided, and Expert editing modes and a number of one click options.

Users can organize photos based on people, places, or events. The new Guided Edits allows users to make professional-level effects like tilt-shift, vignettes, and other effects easily. Photoshop Elements 11 also has new filters, including comic, graphic novel, and pen & ink. Premier Elements 11 also has a new and improved user interface with many of the same updates from Photoshop Elements 11.

An upgrade version is available for $119.99. Each app is available individually as well at $99.99 or at an upgrade price of $79.99. Boxed versions of the applications will ship next month.

Pantech Vega R3 packs Snapdragon S4 Pro, 5.3-inch screen into one hand

Pantech Vega R3 packs S4 Pro, 53inch screen into one hand

If there’s one thing that defines the phablet, it’s not hand portability — what’s on the market usually demands something of a stretch. Pantech wants to keep our grip at least slightly in check through its imminent Vega R3. The Android phone’s 5.3-inch, IPS-based LCD isn’t what we’d call modest, but it’s framed by an extra-thin bezel that Pantech claims is still comfortable in one hand. The R3 will be powerful, no matter how you hold it. It touts the same quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro we just saw in the LG Optimus G along with 2GB of RAM, a 13-megapixel camera and a 2,600mAh battery that can top up 100 minutes. South Koreans can pick up the Vega R3 from one of their three major carriers on September 25th. Sadly, we’re not expecting an American variant of the design given an emphasis on cheaper and smaller Pantech models in the US.
