The Lumia 920’s PureView Camera Passes the Russian RC Car Test [Video]

When it comes to phone cameras, the Lumia 920’s PureView is proving to be pretty awesome at low-light shots, but how good is that Optical Image Stabilization? A couple of Russians with a 920, a Galaxy S III, and an RC car ran a little experiment to find out. Turns out it’s nothing to sneeze at. More »

Printrbot wants to offer affordable 3D printing

3D printing is said to be the next big thing, but it still remains out of reach for most folks. Well, perhaps the Printrbot might be able to change your persuasion when you read more about it, where the inventor behind the Printrbot wants it to be a quick and cheap solution for anyone, where it is able to be put together, taking just a couple of hours to do so. The Printrbot does seem to be the perfect device for folks who want to start dabbling in the world of 3D printing, but would not want the process to be too complicated along the way.

Printrbot creator Brook Drumm claimed that the simplicity of the device’s construction requires a mere 45 minutes to be set up, and you can print your very first 3D model in just a couple of hours upon its unboxing. The Printrbot will come with a $549 introductory price, while the larger sized printer will cost $699. For those who are on a tighter budget, there is also a limited run of $399 “junior” printers.

Looxcie HD brings 1080p and WiFi streaming to a helmet near you

Looxcie HD brings 1080p and WiFi video to an earlobe near you

Looxcie isn’t just a luxurious sounding word (and terrible pun), it’s also a maker of life-sharing head-mounted cameras. Up until now, it would only let you capture your life in a rather pedestrian 480p, but the new Looxcie HD does away with that, letting you grab that bike ride in full glorious high-definition. Other additions include WiFi (previous iterations relied on Bluetooth) to hook up to your Android or iOS device with, a larger 1,200 mAh battery and improved low light performance. Owners of previous models might spot that with new features comes a new, larger form. The price of evolution it seems. The price for the device, on the other hand, is $279, or $329 if you opt for the “Explore” bundle, which incidentally you can pre-order now. Peep at the source for more.

Minds Will Be Blown When You Have a Table That’s Also an Optical Illusion [Beautiful]

Looking at Roberta Rampazzo’s Illusion Side Table, you can’t help but fall into a vortex of heavy thoughts. Are the legs crossing? Are they bent? Are there three legs? Four legs? Five legs? Does this still adhere to the platonic ideal of what a table is? Will I be a better person for having one? Would my parents approve? Is it more valuable than significant others in my life? Can I take it with me into the afterlife? More »

RIM CEO: “Up to 6 percent” suffered BlackBerry outage

RIM CEO Thorsten Heins has published an open apology letter to BlackBerry owners impacted by the service outage earlier today, revealing that up to 6-percent of the company’s user-base was affected. The company is still looking into what, exactly, caused the problem, Heins admits, but the chief exec insists that no messages or data was lost during the roughly three hours of downtime.

I want to apologize to those BlackBerry customers in Europe and Africa who experienced an impact in their quality of service earlier this morning” Heins wrote. “The BlackBerry service is now fully restored and I can report that no data or messages were lost. Up to 6 percent of our user base may have been impacted. Preliminary analysis suggests that those customers may have experienced a maximum delay of 3 hours in the delivery and reception of their messages.”

The issue was first acknowledged by RIM’s UK Twitter account in the early hours of Friday morning, though at the time no explanation was given for the problems users were encountering. A follow-up message several hours later claimed the service was back online, though again no technical details were revealed.

That may have to wait until RIM has finished its own investigation. “We are conducting a full technical analysis of this quality of service issue and will report as soon as it concludes” Heins wrote. “I again want to apologize to those customers who were impacted today.”

Mac Mini Apple ][ Disk Drive Hits the Auction Block

Remember the Mac Mini that was modded into an old Apple ][ Disk Drive a couple of years back? Well, the modder behind the build has now put it up for sale on eBay, to make room for other projects.

mac mini floppy drive

It only has a 1.5Ghz Core Solo CPU and 2GB of RAM, so it’s not the latest and greatest in Mac Mini tech, but on the other hand it’s way more powerful than the 1978 floppy drive upon which it is based. My favorite part of the mod has always been the slot-loading DVD drive that’s perfectly aligned with the old floppy disk slot.

Modder Charles Mangin has listed the 5-1/4″ floppy drive cum Mac Mini with a starting bid of $500(USD), but if you absolutely must have it, there’s a Buy-it-Now price of $1000.

UK pricing begins to filter out for Motorola’s Intel-powered RAZR i smartphone

UK pricing begins to filter out for Motorola's Intelpowered RAZR i smartphone

Soon after it’s unveiling, the Intel-based RAZR i showed up in Clove‘s listings with a SIM-free price of £342, and now it looks as if a few more outlets are pushing pricing details to the world. Expected to storm the UK in October, the phone should ship to Virgin Media customers for around £23 per month on its Premiere Tariff, while T-Mobilers will be able to score one for £0 to £31 per month depending on the contract. All told, not too shabby for the world’s first 2GHz Atom-backed Android phone, and if you’re eager to push all of this iPhone 5 stuff aside, at least you know precisely how many quid to save up between now and next month.

Baxter Industrial Robot is Human-Friendly (Thank Goodness.)

Would you believe that friendly-looking robot giving that guy a hug is an industrial robot? You probably thought they were all just arms that weld and move heavy objects. Well, most are. Baxter obviously is different.
baxter robot

Baxter is the work of roboticist Rodney A. Brooks of Rethink Robotics, and he was obviously designed to be human-friendly. The robot is made to be easily trainable by an assembly line worker, and if you grab Baxter’s hand, it will turn its head and its cartoon eyes on it’s tablet-sized face will look at you as if to say “Hey there, human.” And that’s the point.

The company is betting that in the future robots will work side-by-side with humans. Naturally, they want to be at the forefront here and are working hard to make normally dangerous bots more friendly. It sounds good, until a hug from this guy tears someones head off.

German court: Samsung and Motorola did not infringe on Apple patent

A lower regional court in Mannheim, Germany, ruled today that both Samsung Electronics and Motorola Mobility did not infringe on an Apple patent which actually describes a kind of technology that will prevent smartphone users from pushing a couple of buttons simultaneously on a touchscreen display. Apple did take both Samsung and Motorola Mobility (which is under Google’s umbrella at the moment) to court over their “touch event model” patent, claiming that Android-powered smartphones as well as tablets actually infringe on the patent.

Considering how both iOS- and Android-powered devices can do this, although just like the proverb of how all roads lead to Rome, the two operating systems rely on approaches that differ from one another, albeit slightly. Apple prevents such unwanted touches from happening by giving each “view,” which is an element of the user interface, an exclusive status. As for Android, it relies on a more hierarchical and does not only apply to one “view”, but does so to more than one simultaneously.

While the court refused to enter into the nitty gritty concerning both cases, it must be noted that Apple and Samsung did discuss a similar multitouch patent in a court in The Hague just a couple of weeks ago. Apple definitely has the right to appeal the ruling, and it remains to be seen whether they will do so or not. Will this set a precedent in similar cases elsewhere?

Alleged Pentagon City Mall Shoplifter Had Diplomatic Immunity

ARLINGTON, Va. — Two women stand accused of trying to steal more than $600 worth of clothes from Macy’s at the Pentagon City mall on Wednesday evening.

ARLnow.com reports on why only one of them was taken to jail:

When police arrived, both suspects claimed to have diplomatic immunity, according to Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck. After checking with the State Department, it was determined that one suspect, a 35-year-old woman, was indeed a diplomat from Jordan and had diplomatic immunity. She was released on a court summons, accused of trying to steal $205 worth of merchandise.
