JetBlue in-flight Wi-Fi coming your way in Q1 2013

Having in-flight Wi-Fi service is not something new or groundbreaking, but it is still encouraging to see more and more airlines offer this feature whenever you are traveling to your destination. After all, most of the movies shown during your journey are not the latest blockbusters in cinemas, and there are only so many times you can play some cheap knockoff of Pong in your cramped economy class seat. An internet connection while you are in the air would definitely be more fun to play around with, and JetBlue will be unveiling their in-flight Wi-Fi service sometime in the first quarter of next year, where this free baseline service will be available for the first 30 planes in its fleet at the very least.

JetBlue claims that their in-flight Wi-Fi will be able to deliver “exponentially more bandwidth” compared to other airlines’ Wi-Fi services courtesy of satellite-based technology, but I guess the proof is in the pudding, so we will need to hop on a JetBlue flight before coming to a conclusive decision on that claim. Instead of relying on Gogo, JetBlue will use the satellite service in a partnership with ViaSat. It must be noted that ViaSat’s Exede Internet service does promise a minimum speed of 12Mbps (theoretically) for each passenger, which is sufficient for basic email and browsing. You might need to fork out more for the non-basic service if you want to enjoy movie streaming in the air.

Project Holodeck gets help from Razer, swaps Kinect for Move tracking

Project Holodeck gets help from Razer, swaps Kinect for Move tracking

The group of folks bent on crafting a real-life version of Star Trek’s “Holodeck” — a virtual playground, essentially — are getting official support from gaming hardware company Razer. That support means not only access to Razer’s hardware but also the company’s staff of trained professionals. The Project Holodeck team have already implemented Razer’s “Hydra” — a PC-based motion controller that originally shipped with Portal 2 — into their work on Holodeck showcase game, “Wild Skies.”

But that’s not the only big news for Project Holodeck, as the team recently swapped Microsoft’s Kinect motion tech for Sony’s PlayStation Move motion tech. Project lead James Iliff told RoadtoVR.com, “The Kinect hardware is extremely lacking in fidelity. Every point the Kinect tracks is filled with unmanageable jitter, rendering the data useless for anything other than the most simple of interactions. We tried very hard to get around this with several software algorithms we wrote, to get multiple Kinects to communicate with each other, however this did not really make anything more accurate unfortunately.” In place of Kinect, the team strapped a PlayStation Move setup to a Pro-Tec skateboard helmet, and combined that tracking with the Hydra’s motion control and Oculus Rift’s head-mounted display. The result is … well, it’s a person standing in a room with a whole bunch of electronics attached to their person. But also, it allows players to interact in a 3D environment — from perception to engagement. The team’s still got plenty of work ahead of them, as evidenced by their latest video (below), but it sounds like things are coming together more cohesively than before.

McLaren P1 Supercar unveiled before Paris Auto Show debut

This morning McLaren has just teased the world by releasing the first three official photos of their new McLaren P1 supercar. The McLaren P1 will be known as the successor to the wildly popular F1, and again be aiming for Automotive greatness. If you love cars the image below should surely get you excited for what’s coming soon.

Earlier today McLaren confirmed that they’ll be aiming for “Pole Position in Paris” where they’ll be officially showing off the new P1 for the first time at the Paris Auto Show. The images released today should stir up plenty of excitement just in time with the show scheduled for late this month.

Instead of going for all out top speed with the P1, McLaren is aiming for the all around perfect experience. The McLaren P1 will be the ultimate machine and geared as the best car in the world for both the road, and on the track. They’ve put tons of technology into this new machine and here’s what a few of McLaren’s execs had to say:

The McLaren P1 will be the result of 50 years of racing and road car heritage,’ says McLaren Automotive Executive Chairman Ron Dennis. ‘Twenty years ago we raised the supercar performance bar with the McLaren F1 and our goal with the McLaren P1 is to redefine it once again.”

Our goal is to make the McLaren P1 the most exciting, most capable, most technologically advanced and most dynamically accomplished supercar ever made

Unfortunately, that is all the details we have on this impressive new supercar for now. Next weeks Auto Show we’ll surely be hearing about all the amazing new advances and technology behind this car that is destined for greatness. Rumors suggest the new McLaren P1 could arrive in 12 months for around $650,000. More details coming up September 27th from the Paris Auto Show.

Sensory Maps Show Locations Along with Their Sights, Smells, and Sounds

Traditionally, maps were made to help people find their way around a city that they might be visiting for the first time. However, Kate McLean took the basic concept of the map and spun it around to come up with an all-new series that have made the jump from being reference materials to art: the Sensory Maps.

sensory map newportInstead of telling you where certain streets or landmarks are located, Kate’s sensory maps will instead let you know what it would feel like if you were actually there. How? By letting you smell its scents, taste the surrounding atmosphere, feel whatever might be there, and hear the sounds in that location.

Of course, it would be impossible to let you experience all these senses through a map – but that’s what your imagination is for, right?

sensor map smells

To construct some of the maps, Kate invited people to go to her studio and smell bottles with scents in them. She then had them recall what that scent remind them of and write down the place or feeling that they associated with the smell.

That’s a lot of work, considering that this is just for one of the senses that Kate’s trying to capture in her work.

Panasonic Toughbook 19 gets Ivy Bridge upgrade, small price bump

Panasonic Toughbook 19 gets Ivy Bridge upgrade, small price bump

There’s no doubt Panasonic keeps its Toughbook 19 line updated with the recent times, and today’s no exception. This time out a processor upgrade is the main change, with the company announcing the rugged convertible will now ship sporting one of Intel’s latest CPU creations — a Core i5-3320M vPro, to be precise. That’s not all, however, since there are also improvements in battery life, the addition of USB 3.0 ports and the option to load it with a beefier 500GB hard drive. Naturally, these nice enhancements had a mild effect on the price tag, making the jump from the previous starting price of $3,349 to a slightly heftier $3,549. But, hey, if you’re already spending that much, 200 extra bucks shouldn’t cause you any sweats.

Hasselblad Lunar mirrorless camera to retail for $6,500

Hasselblad has plans to burn yet another hole in your pocket with an upcoming Italian designed mirrorless camera known as Hasselblad Lunar, where it is said to carry a price tag of $6,500 – which is definitely an amount not to be sneezed at. Expected to carry traditional Hasselblad state-of-the-art image capture alongside artistically stunning Italian design features, the Hasselblad Lunar was developed traditionally via the implementation of handcrafted wooden prototypes that ensures superior ergonomics as well as high-end functionality. Not only that, it must be noted that the Lunar will be able to see action in fully manual and fully automatic modes, and is not exactly the clumsiest device to figure out, but rather, it is the opposite, packing in advanced technology found in DSLRs while being a snap to use.

RIM bags license to use Microsoft’s exFAT file system

Microsoft has inked a deal with Research-In-Motion according to which, the BlackBerry maker will be able to make of use of Microsoft’s exFAT file system. The scope of the deal includes ‘certain BlackBerry devices’, which we are expecting to be upcoming BlackBerry 10 devices and not the older models.

The use of exFAT file system will essentially enable these ‘certain’ devices to be able to transfer data across devices, such as computers and tablets, in a more streamlined manner. As per the press release, “exFAT is a modern file system from Microsoft that facilitates large files for audiovisual media and enables seamless data portability and an easy interchange between desktop PCs and other electronic devices.”

McLaren P1 debuts at the Paris Motor Show

The McLaren P1 will hope to be able to continue from where its legendary predecessor, the McLaren F1 left off, by making an appearance at the Paris Motor Show. It will no doubt share a similar project name of its predecessor that lit up the automobile world in the 1990s, and will definitely be able to take on the next generation of hypercars such as the Ferrari Enzo successor to the Porsche 918 Spyder. As a testament to British engineering, the McLaren P1 will be built in the UK.

McLaren did say that the P1 is a ‘design study’ which should be a preview of the final production version that will hit the roads, driven by mega-rich sports stars as well as oil oligarchs. Chances are the final production car will not veer too far away from the design that you see above. It should be a highly sought after ride, considering that a regional director for McLaren dropped hints that only 500 P1s will roll off their production lines, and each P1 will carry a price tag of less than one million Euros.

Polaroid XS7, XS20 and XS100 Sports Cameras run $69 and up, we snap away at Photokina (sample video)

Polaroid may not be the first name that comes to mind when you think of adventure-friendly video cams — Contour and GoPro own that space, with Sony now making a heavy push of its own — but the insta-film maker turned camera manufacturer now has a rugged lineup of its own. First off the assembly line is the XS7, a $69 cam that packs a waterproof housing (rated to 10 meters), 720p video capture and a 2-inch touchscreen. This model is as entry level as they come, and Polaroid reps said to expect to see it in stores like Toys ‘R’ Us. If you’re slightly more serious about image quality, you might opt for the XS20, which packs a “professional” CMOS sensor, 720p shooting, a waterproof housing (20 meters) and a battery that’s rated for up to 3 hours of use. It also includes a fixed lens with a 120-degree viewing angle that’s surrounded by eight LCDs, for shooting in the dark. Finally, The XS100 is what you might consider to be Polaroid’s flagship, with support for 1080p video, an adjustable frame rate, a 170-degree lens, an orientation sensor for auto rotation and a $200 price tag. All three cameras use microSD cards, but the XS100 also includes 32MB of internal storage, letting you store a small collection of 5-megapixel stills.

The sports-shooting trio may not blow you away spec-wise, and we also weren’t floored by the design, but they weren’t created to lead the market from a performance perspective — Polaroid is playing up the cost angle here, and we don’t blame them. Based on our quick test of the XS7, image quality was passable, but you’re not going to want to use it for close-up shots as we did here. Even with the underwater housing removed, frames were either under or overexposed, generally unsharp and audio wasn’t terribly clear. It’s worth noting that we played with a pre-production sample, that’ll run you just shy of $70 when it does hit stores. That said, if quality is key and you don’t mind dropping a few hundred bucks, you’ll probably be happier with a more established model. Because we’re at a photo show and Polaroid was generous enough to let us take the XS7 for a spin, we figured there’s no better way to demonstrate this camera’s capabilities by using it to film our hands-on — you’ll find that video tour just past the break.
