The iControlPad 2 is an open source controller that will work across the board

If you enjoyed using the iControlPad for your iPhone but wish there were more features to it, you’re in luck as its manufacturer, Product 3 LLC, has launched a new Kickstarter project where they will be working on the iControlPad’s successor, the iControlPad 2. It will include a 5 row keyboard, dual analog controls, and best of all it will be compatible not just with iOS devices, but with a variety of other operating systems as well, such as Android, PC, Mac, Linux and etc. It’s even open source which means that if you wanted to use the iControlPad 2 to control a robot, you will be able to hack it and reprogram it to do so! However for the less technical savvy, if you just wanted a gaming controller for your mobile device, it should get the job done just fine. Either way if you’d like to see the iControlPad 2 be made into a reality, head on over to its Kickstarter page to learn more or to pledge a donation.

Shazam notes that it has reached a major milestone and exceeded a quarter of a billion users globally on it service. More interestingly, the company has expanded its Shazam for TV second screen application service in the US.

Hands-On With The Fitbit Zip

fitbit4

Fitbit just announced two new devices, the $99 One, a replacement for the Ultra pedometer, and the Zip, a $60 entry-level model that adds a bit of mirth to the Fitbit family. The One won’t be available until October but I carried Zip around for a week or so already and found it to be quite fun and capable.

The Zip is a departure from the original “clothespin” style Ultra in that it can be removed from its case to create a sort of pedometer lozenge. It also runs on a single watch battery that lasts for six months, making it far more interesting to folks who don’t want to lug their charger with them.

The Zip is similar to the first Fitbit in that it measures steps taken, calories, and distance. It does not support stairs taken, which could be a dealbreaker for fans of the current model. Most important, it does away with Fitbit’s pretty growing flower iconography – a flower grew when you exercised more – and instead replaces it with a smiling face that beams at you when you’ve gotten off your couch.

Instead of a cradle, Fitbit includes a small dongle for USB devices as well as low power Bluetooth support for syncing with mobile devices.

The other new Fitbit, the One, features everything the Ultra had, including the stair meter, as well as Bluetooth 4.0 support. The One also has a gradual alarm for waking yourself from sleep, something that was missing in the original models.

Why a Fitbit? I’ve found that the Fitbit really helps you understand your activity levels. While it’s not a complete indicator of fitness, it’s nice to know I’ve been sitting down all day long and could probably use a walk. While I wouldn’t say it’s a great weight loss tool, it’s definitely an excellent reminder and prod for adding a bit more physical activity to your day. I’m definitely more interested in the One, shown below, when it becomes available because of the gradual alarm and stair feature.

Mayer gives all Yahoo employees a new smartphone

Yahoo’s new CEO Marissa Mayer has been working hard to turn things around at the once prominent search firm. Mayer has been shaking things up and making some significant changes at Yahoo in her turnaround attempts. We mentioned not long ago that Microsoft was going to be handing out a bunch of new gadgets to employees and now Yahoo is getting in on the action.

Reports indicate that Yahoo’s new CEO Marissa Mayer sent an e-mail to all full-time and part-time employees of Yahoo in the United States promising them a new smartphone. According to reports, Mayer offered a device from Apple, Samsung, Nokia, or HTC. I would imagine what this means is the vast majority of employees will be going with the new iPhone 5 or the Galaxy S III.

There is nothing truly compelling from Nokia or HTC available right now. A source of the company simply said, “People are happy” reports Business Insider. Indications that Mayer might be offering all Yahoo employees a new smartphones surfaced a few weeks ago. Yahoo is apparently calling the program to hand out new smartphones “Yahoo! Smart Phones, Smart Fun!”

Apparently, the memo sent out to employees about the new program offers specific devices to choose from. The specific devices include the iPhone 5, and Galaxy S III, HTC One X, HTC Evo 4G LTE, or the Nokia Lumia 920. As I said before, the iPhone 5 or S III are sure to be the most popular options from that list. Yahoo will even pay the phone bills for its workers and word is support for BlackBerry smartphones is being discontinued. The program is expected to cost a few million dollars and will have Yahoo employees using the same devices most mobile users access Yahoo with.

SiriusXM for Android update brings On Demand and offline listening

If you’re an Android-toting SiriusXM fan, you’ve probably spent the last month wondering when your smartphone would get the newfound flexibility to tune in beyond live radio. As of Sirius XM’s version 2.2 update, Android is back on equal footing. The upgrade supplies On Demand streaming, both for catch-up and the occasional classic, as well as downloadable copies to keep the music and talk flowing offline. As before, the access is considered a free perk of a SiriusXM subscription; if you enjoy Howard Stern’s cynicism enough to want it at odd hours of the day, your angsty fix awaits at the source.

HTC One X+ for T-Mobile delayed [Rumor]

So come 19th September, HTC could be unveiling several new devices, one of which could be the HTC One X+, where the rumors are saying it’s basically an improved version of the HTC One X. The closest thing we have to a confirmation would be its FCC appearance, but beyond that we guess we will have to wait for HTC to make the official announcement themselves. However according to the folks at HTC Source, it seems that if you’re a T-Mobile subscriber and are interested in getting your hands on the One X+, you might be in a spot of bad luck.

They have reported that according to their sources, the T-Mobile variant of the One X+ has been delayed although it was not stated why, and how long it would be delayed for. They are also reporting that even though its design will be similar to that of the One X, it will be slightly thicker due to its larger battery which is probably good news for those hoping for longer battery life. Once again we advise you to take this with a grain of salt, but check back with us in a couple of days for the official details.

LG Optimus G makes its commercial debut in Korea

Come 19th of September, LG and Qualcomm are set to make an announcement which some believe could very well be the LG Optimus G. Previously it was rumored that the Optimus G could be announced for the US this week and thanks to a commercial debut in South Korea, it leaves little to the imagination as to what LG and Qualcomm’s upcoming event will be about. The commercial itself doesn’t really tell us much about the device, but given that the phone has been announced a while back already, we guess we didn’t really need any new information. In any case if the LG Optimus G is a phone you’d love to get your hands on, check out the commercial in the video above, perhaps it might be able to whet your appetite. You can also check back with us on the 19th of September for additional details.
