iPhone 5 “most successful iPhone launch ever” says AT&T

Apple’s iPhone 5 has set a new sales record at AT&T over the weekend, the carrier has confirmed, with the 4-inch smartphone blasting through demand seen for its predecessors on the network. In fact, the iPhone 5 was the fastest-selling iPhone AT&T has offered, with more ordered – both on the Friday, its first day of availability, and over the weekend – than every before.

That’s enough to make it the “most successful iPhone launch ever” AT&T concludes. It’s certainly looking increasingly difficult to get an iPhone 5 on launch day if you go to Apple direct; current shipping estimates at the company’s own online store suggest a 2-3 week delay before one of the updated handsets can be yours.

In fact, the official shipping estimate slipped to a week behind in-store availability less than an hour after presales began on Friday in the US, with the UK following suit after another 30 minutes. Neither AT&T nor Apple have given any specific presales numbers so far, though, so its difficult to know exactly how many people jumped at the chance of a new phone.

iPhone 5 hands-on:

After the somewhat discrete changes between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5 is altogether more obvious in its differences. The handset is both thinner and longer, with a 4-inch screen – still running at “Retina” resolution – and has seen its glass back panel replaced with anodized aluminum. Inside, there’s a faster processor and LTE connectivity.

More iPhone 5 details in our full hands-on.

Fujifilm unveils sexy XF1 digital camera

Fujifilm has been busy this month unveiling new digital cameras in its high-end X-series line. At the beginning of the month, Fujifilm unveiled the X-E1 interchangeable lens digital camera positioned to rival full-frame DSLR cameras on the market. Today Fujifilm has unveiled another new camera called the XF1.

Fujifilm is positioning the XF1 as a premium digital camera with a perfectly matched lens and sensor, high attention to detail on the materials and design, and more. It looks like Fujifilm is trying to channel a Leica vibe with the XF1. The new camera doesn’t offer interchangeable lenses and uses a Fujinon F1.8 lens with four times manual zoom.

The camera has a large 2/3-inch 12-megapixel EXR CMOS sensor that Fujifilm promises will deliver extraordinary image quality. The camera will come in three different designs that vary in color with one having synthetic black leather, one having smooth synthetic tan leather, and another having synthetic red leather. The leather on all three models is offset by the silver aluminum frame of the camera.

Fujifilm expects to launch the camera in October at $499.95. The camera has three power modes, including travel with the lens fully retracted, standby where the camera is off but the lens is extended, and shooting mode with the camera ready to go. The camera features optical image stabilization, full manual controls, a three-inch rear LCD, and supports ISO 100-12,800. The camera can shoot full HD resolution video and promises 300 shots per battery charge. The camera also supports motion panorama for seamless panoramic shots and macro shooting. The camera also features a number of automatic and artistic effects modes.

Samsung Galaxy S4 tipped to chase iPhone 5 with March 2013 release

Samsung is aiming to launch its next flagship, the Galaxy S 4 and the replacement of the Galaxy S III, as early as February 2013, execs reportedly claim, maintaining its pressure on Apple’s iPhone. The new phone will be revealed at Mobile World Congress 2013 in Barcelona, an unnamed executive from Samsung told The Korea Times, with a global release in March; the biggest change could be a bigger screen, now up to 5-inches according to the insider source.

That would move the Galaxy S 4 further toward “phablet” territory; the existing Galaxy S III uses a 4.8-inch screen, itself a sizable step up from the 4.3-inch panel on the Galaxy S II. Samsung is tipped to stick with its own OLED technology, unsurprisingly, though it’s said to be undecided whether it will use a flexible panel of some sort – which could be curved around the phone’s chassis or simply bent to better suit the curvature of the user’s face – after Samsung’s display division encountered production issues.

Other specifications are expected to include LTE and Samsung’s own Exynos quadcore chipsets, rather than the mixture of Exynos and Qualcomm Snapdragon processors on the current phone. As with the current model, it will run Android.

The new phone could also feature a significantly higher resolution camera than the 8-megapixel example Samsung’s current high-end range tops out at. The company is believed to have intended to use a 13-megapixel camera in the recently announced Galaxy Note II, but had its plans scuppered when LG monopolized sensor supplies for its own upcoming Optimus G.

“Samsung wants to keep its one-year product schedule and the Galaxy S4 will be the first to match that strategy” a local Samsung partner apparently told the Korean paper. “The S4 will see some external changes but retain its popular rectangular shape with rounded corner concept.”

According to the sources, Samsung’s ambitious timetable was settled upon three days after Apple’s iPhone 5 event last week, with the company hoping that a refresh of its flagship after just nine months will prove suitably compelling in contrast to the iOS 6 handset. Third-party figures suggested the Galaxy S III surpassed the iPhone 4S in US sales in August, the first time Apple’s device had been eclipsed, though the milestone was swiftly followed by the reveal of the iPhone 5.

Samsung Galaxy S4 rumored for MWC 2013 debut

Samsung logoIt’s been several months since Samsung announced the Galaxy S3, and while it is certainly one of the best Android devices out there, it seems like the rumor mill for its successor, the Galaxy S4, has already begun. According to the folks at The Korea Times, they have reported that according to their inside source, it looks like Samsung is gearing up to announce the Galaxy S4 at MWC 2013 which should be taking place in February of next year. Canon EOS 6D makes it official debut

It looks like the rumor mill was right on the money when they said that we could expect the Canon EOS 6D this week, and true enough Canon has made the official announcement. It is expected to be made available come December of 2012 and will be priced at $2,099 for the body-only version, and $2,899 for the kit lens version that comes bundled with a EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM zoom lens. Given that price, it’s safe to assume that this is more for the dedicated photographer or professional, and probably not for the average photographer who might be on the lookout for something a bit more affordable.

So, what can we expect from the EOS 6D? For starters it will feature a 20.2MP full-frame CMOS image sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 5+ Image Processor. It will also come with an 11-point AF system, 1080p Full HD video capture, a 3” LCD on the back, ISO ranging from 100-25,600 with a low of 50, and two high settings at 51,200 or 102,400. It also comes with WiFi and GPS capabilities, where images and videos can be shared with other Canon products with WiFi, and a remote app has also been created for iOS and Android, allowing the user to control the camera via their smartphone or tablet. So, any takers? [Press release]

US ITC judge rules that Apple did not violate four of Samsung’s patents

It certainly seems like Samsung can’t catch a break and a couple of days ago, the US ITC ruled in favor of Apple where they basically said that the Cupertino company did not violate any of the four patents that Samsung claims Apple violated. As it stands it looks like Apple is indeed in the clear, but the case is subject to review from the full commission so there’s always a chance of a reversal, but for now Apple is safe. According to Adam Yates, a Samsung spokesperson:

“We remain confident that the full commission will ultimately reach a final determination that affirms our position that Apple must be held accountable for free-riding on our technological innovations […] We are proud of our long history of innovation in the mobile industry and will continue to defend our intellectual property rights.”

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60MM F2.8 “Nature Macro Lens” unleashed with classic partner

There are a couple new lenses out in the open today from Olympus, both of them with aspirations for greatness and a new generation of both control and limited edition coolness. The First of these is the Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60MM F2.8 “Nature Macro Lens”, made with dust proofing and splash proofing together with 1x magnification and a focusing distance of 19cm. The second is the Limited Edition M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm f2.0 in Black, basically the same as the original M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm f2.0 large-aperture, wide-angle, single-focal-length interchangeable lens, but this time in black.

Olympus M.Zuiko Digital ED 60MM F2.8 Macro Lens

The macro lens we’re looking at here is a single focal-length lens with weather-proofing along with 13 lens elements. You’ve got 13 lens elements in 10 groups of lenses inside this beast with special glass materials such as ED (Extra-low Dispersion), HR (High Refractive index) and E-HR (Extra-High Refractive index) – each added to bring you to a new level of professional greatness. You’ll be all but eliminating the chromatic aberrations you’re likely used to from other telephoto macro lenses, and you’ll be good to go for HD video as well.

This macro lens works with an Olympus developed MSC (Movie & Still Compatible) autofocusing mechanism with inner focus system for ultra quick and completely quiet focusing on the go. There are three different modes of focus range that you can work with for photography, those being the following: close-up (focusing distance between 19 and 40 cm), normal (distance from 19 cm to infinity) and far view (distance from 40 cm to infinity). There’s also an optional LH-49 Lens Hood made specifically for the macro lens at hand, and there’s also the FR-2 Macro Ring in play here which enables compatibility with the RF-11 Ring Flash and the STF-22 Twin Flash Set.

Limited Edition M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm f2.0 in Black

This lens is the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm f2.0 large-aperture, wide-angle, single-focal-length interchangeable lens you’ve grown to love with a lovely black color in a limited edition release. This release has a snap ring for pan focus with distance indicators in place and the unit has a wide angle of 12mm. Inside you’ve also got the OlympusMSC (Movie & Still Compatible) mechanism which allows quiet, fast autofocusing for still photography and in video. This black version of the lens is sold in a kit with the LH-48 Metallic Lens Hood (Black), the LC-48 Metallic Lens Cap (Black), and the PRF-D46PRO Protection Filter.

M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm f1.8 in Development

Olympus has also let it be known that they’ve got a M.ZUIKO DIGITAL 17mm f1.8 in development, coming soon with an emphasis on snapshots and street shooting. You’ll be working with a high-quality metallic outer finish and what Olympus says is a focal length equivalent to 34mm on a 35mm camera. More details will be coming soon from Olympus as they get closer to a release date, that being somewhere inside the first half of 2013.

Pricing and Release

The Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 60mm f2.8 Dust-and-Splash-Proof Macro lens is coming in October and will be available for approximately $499.99 USD. The Olympus M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12mm f2.0 lens limited edition Black unit will be out in early October (here in 2012 as well) for an estimated street price of $1,099.99 USD. Stay tuned for more Olympus action as the camera crew brings on more heat through the year!
