Pakistan Press Freedom: Journalists’ Choice: Face Death Or Jail

QUETTA, Pakistan — The telephone call to local journalists generally comes in the late evening. The voice on the other end is harsh. He has a statement he wants printed, and he prefaces it with a terse order: “Report our messages without making any changes or we will kill you.”

The messages they deliver warn of upcoming violence or assassinations, sometimes naming an intended victim, or claim responsibility for atrocities already committed. The calls come from Sunni militants notorious for violence against minority Shiites or members of secessionist groups that routinely blow up police stations and attack government facilities in the southwestern Pakistani province of Baluchistan.

Work Stress Could Raise Heart Risks: Study

Having a tough week at work? Make sure you de-stress — a new review of studies highlights how work stress could be hurting your health.

The review, published in the journal The Lancet and conducted by researchers at the University College London, shows that people with demanding, straining jobs have an overall 23 percent increased risk of heart attack.

The findings are based on job stress and heart attack data from 200,000 people in Europe, who participated in a total of 13 studies between 1985 and 2006. The studies had an average follow-up period of 7.5 years, during which 2,356 heart attacks or heart-related deaths occurred.

Future Panasonic G camera’s 72Mbps movie-making prowess teased through speedy drama (video)

Future Panasonic G camera's 72Mbps moviemaking prowess teased through speedy drama video

If Panasonic didn’t have attention from movie producers before, it just might as of this week. Joining the quickly developing tradition of camera makers producing elaborate short movies as technology demos, the company has let cinematographer Philip Bloom wield (and tease) a “brand new G camera” to record Genesis, a fast-paced mini-drama showing a man’s race to meet his love before it’s too late. While Bloom can’t talk much about the hardware in question until the 17th, he’s allowed to confirm that the upcoming Micro Four Thirds body relies on a “superb” 72Mbps All-I codec for video — letting it capture a sprint through the streets without the compression artifacts of the AVCHD format used by most mirrorless cameras. Panasonic’s upcoming shooter also touts “much improved” results in the dark, Bloom says. It all sounds very tempting, especially if it turns out that Panasonic’s inadvertent leaks are for the same camera we see in action here. The full movie is available after the break, and Bloom has the behind-the-scenes details at the source link.

‘Pyramids’ Video: Frank Ocean Drops NSFW Video For Song Off ‘Channel ORANGE’

Frank Ocean followed up his smooth “SNL” debut with a new video for “Pyramids,” a standout track off the R&B star’s highly lauded first studio album, channel ORANGE.

The NSFW spot features Ocean riding a motorcycle and stopping by a Las Vegas strip club (what else did you think “she’s working at the Pyramid tonight” meant?) before finding himself in the shadow of some real pyramids. The majority of the video focuses on Ocean’s complicated feelings for a stripper (mediated again, perhaps, by Ocean’s semi-recent decision to reveal that his first love was a man).

It’s not like they ever completely disappeared from the scene, but between this video and the visuals for Kanye West and 2 Chainz’ “Birthday Song,” women with extremely rotund derrières are really en vogue.

Microsoft patent requires you to slap your phone to turn it off

Are there moments in time when you were using your smartphone, and it goes all wonky on you that you have half a mind to just bang it on the table out of sheer frustration? The only thing that stopped you was the fact that replacing the shiny device in your hand is going to burn another hole in your pocket that you cannot afford. Well, if you have answered in the affirmative, perhaps you might be interested in Microsoft’s latest patent that, to put it less mildly, bitch-slap your handset in order to keep it quiet. This is a legitimate way of releasing your frustrations on your handset without damaging it.

The patent application claims that you can “whack” your handset to turn it off, the thing is, will it turn off permanently since you have strength that is nearer to the Hulk’s? Hopefully the phones that carry this particular patent would be built tough enough so that they are able to take in all the future abuse that come their way.

Project Eternity did not take that long to achieve Kickstarter funding goal

Duke Nukem Forever lived up to its name, but Obsidian’s Kickstarter outing with Project Eternity certainly did not take eternity to fulfil. In fact, Project Eternity actually achieved their funding goal yesterday, having a time window of over a month left to laze about celebrating this success. Needless to say, the team is happy to announce that they have new stretch goals implemented into the Kickstarter campaign, where some of the stretch goals include a new playable race, class and companion for $1.4 million, while topping up that amount with another $200,000 would see a Mac version of Project Eternity being introduced in addition to adding a new major storyline that will be chock-full with new quests, locations, NPCs, and unique loot.

When funding hits $1.8 million, you get yet another playable race, class, and companion to provide more options to grow for your main character. $2.2 million will see a new region thrown into the mix, where it is accompanied by a new faction and another new companion, not to mention Linux compatibility. Anything more than that and you will probably have a unicorn shipped to your doorstep, magical horn and all.

Minecraft Pocket Edition out for Kindle Fire

It goes without saying that reading between the lines is a skill that most folks should pick up in order to be more sensitive to people around us when communicating. Having said that, when we heard that Minecraft Pocket Edition is now out on the Amazon Appstore, it also translates to the official availability of this device for the Kindle Fire. You need not worry about pricing differences for Minecraft Pocket Edition on the Amazon Appstore, as it will still retail for $7 a pop, which is a similar price tag to what you are able to find on the Android and iOS app stores.

Kindle Fire owners who had to jump through hoops and perform other kinds of rooting tricks on their tablet previously in order to get a taste of Minecraft Pocket Edition need not do so any more. Kiss goodbye to third-party subscriptions, too, as you can enjoy Minecraft Pocket Edition on your Kindle Fire the legitimate way in exchange for some cash and a simple click.

How would you change SMS Audio Sync by 50

Rap singer, philanthropist, actor and high-end sound designer, truly Curtis Jackson is the Aristotle of our day. Of course, it’s his latter profession that brings him to the coveted pages of How Would You Change, as we delve into his SMS Audio Sync by 50 wireless headphones. When our in-house audio maven strapped them to his head, he found that $400 price tag to be a little steep given how messy the overall experience was — with features like “Thumpp” bass boost only available when connected via dongle and other features absent unless you buy more accessories. Our reviewer hoped that Version 2.0 would iron out all of those creases, but how about you? What suggestions would you like to send to the venerable 50 Cent about how he can improve these high-end cans?
