Apple wins against Motorola in Germany over “rubber banding” patent

If you thought that maybe Apple’s victory over Samsung in the US was the first step towards the end of the patent war, you would be wrong as that was merely a battle victory as the war is far from over. Over in Germany, it seems that Apple has managed to win a rather substantial victory against Motorola where the Munich I Regional Court awarded Apple an injunction against a variety of Motorola devices that allegedly infringed upon the “rubber banding” patent. In case the name wasn’t obvious enough, this “rubber banding” patent refers to an animation that bounces back when reaching the top or bottom of a list (if you own an iOS device, you should give it a go if you don’t know what we’re referring to). Of course we expect Motorola to appeal this injunction, but for now it looks like Apple has the upper hand. If you’d like to see how this one plays out, be sure to check back with us at a later date where hopefully we will have more information to share.

Olympus E-PL5 and E-PM2 interchangeable lens cameras leak into view

Olympus

Secrets have been hard to keep in the camera world lately, and now Olympus has undergone its second leak in as many days, but this time with a couple of higher-profile actors — the E-PL5 and E-PM2 mirrorless cameras. Both will use the Olympus E-M5 sensor with TruePic VI image engine and touchscreen, and are reported to be priced at €399 ($520) for the E-PM2 with a 14-42mm kit lens (in silver, below the break) and €599 ($780) for the E-PL5 with the same lens, shown above. That follows earlier leaks from Sony, Fujifilm and others, along with two upcoming lenses from Olympus that were also outed ahead of time. Hopefully, there’ll still be a couple of surprises left when Photokina rolls around next week.

Sony’s #TweetSinger app turns your tweets into songs

Tweets are basically characters on our screen which can be further enhanced by uploading photos to accompany our tweets. However if you’re looking for a more novel way to tweet, perhaps in song, well Sony has announced their #TweetSinger online app. Basically what it does is that it takes your 140 characters and turns it into a song. Users will be able to select from different song styles, such as Chill, Funky, Upbeat, Swagger or Rave, and have their tweets read back to them in song. When the song has been created, users will then get the choice of sharing it via Twitter, Facebook or Google+. So if you’d like to shake things up a bit on your Twitter account, head on over to Sony Mobile’s website to try the app out for yourself! Granted turning every tweet into a song could get annoying, it certainly has some novel value for now, so get creative! Feel free to share your creations in the comments below as well.

Leaked Windows Phone 7.8 ROM spotted on a Nokia Lumia 800

We’re sure that many Windows Phone users were disappointed and possibly angry to learn that their current Windows Phone devices will not be updated to Windows Phone 8, ultimately forcing them to upgrade (we’re hoping this will not be a trend with future Windows Phone iterations). However Micrsoft did “compromise” by offering current-gen Windows Phone devices to be upgraded to Windows Phone 7.8, which basically introduces the update home screen with smaller tiles and a couple of other Windows Phone 8 features to current-gen devices.

Well if you’re wondering how that might look like, it seems that a Nokia Lumia 800 was spotted (via WindowsMania.pl) running on a leaked version of the Windows Phone 7.8 ROM. It looks pretty good and hopefully it will be enough to appease those who do not wish to upgrade their devices yet. This leak isn’t too surprising given that word on street has it that Windows Phone 7.8 will be arriving on Lumia devices “soon”. In the meantime this comparison chart (not official) should give you an idea of the differences between Windows Phone 7.8 and Windows Phone 8.

Guild Wars 2 manages to sell over 2 million copies

It has been a little over two weeks since Guild Wars 2 was launched, and both NCsoft and ArenaNet have come forward and revealed that the game has since sold an impressive 2 million copies! This is good given the time frame, and let’s not forget that digital sales were suspended for over a week as ArenaNet worked to ensure that there was enough space on their servers so that the gameplay experience would not affect both new and existing players. Also according to NCsoft, they are boasting that there are over 400,000 players online concurrently which we have to admit isn’t too shabby!

The problem with MMOs is that despite the good intentions behind them, usually the lack of players translated into a neglected game that would eventually die out. At the same time having a large player base is also a marketing strategy that will encourage players to give it a go. If you think that World of Warcraft isn’t for you, especially with the monthly subscription fee, then perhaps Guild Wars 2’s impressive stats might be good enough for you to check the game out.

Google Nexus 7 reportedly facing hard time trying to get into China

Google Nexus 7It seems that if you wanted to get your hands on Google’s Nexus 7 tablet in an official capacity in China, you might be in for a wait. According to reports (via Digitimes), it seems that China has yet to approve the tablet for import. Based on what their industry sources from Taiwan told them, the reason China has yet to approve the import of the tablet and why they might be giving Google such a hard is because, “The China government’s negative attitude is interpreted as a response to Google’s announcement of withdrawing from the China market in March 2010, the sources pointed out. It is difficult for the Nexus 7 to enter the China market, even though sale of Asustek’s marketing network there, the sources indicated.”

At the same time, the delay is boosting local manufacturers as they are able to churn out tablets just as cheap, if not cheaper, and offer them to China’s massive population. When asked to comment on the issue, Google declined. No word on when we might see the Nexus 7 tablet in China, but for those living in China you might have to result in alternative methods of importing the device, such as through Taobao.

Motorola launches HMC3260 “Cloud Broadband” Android entertainment device in China

If you’ve always wanted an Android based computer, not a smartphone and not a tablet, well it seems like the folks in China might have lucked out as Motorola has officially revealed the Motorola HMC3260 “Cloud Broadband” home entertainment device. It appears to have launched for China’s market at the moment, and there is no word on whether it will be making its way into other markets like in the US, but we guess we’ll take a look at the specs first before letting you decide if this is a device you might want in the first place.

Featuring an 18.5” touchscreen display, the “Cloud Broadband” device will come with a wireless keyboard and a wireless mouse. It has been designed to access on-demand video, online games, Android apps along with other cloud-based entertainment services, all of which are readily available in the US, so it won’t be too hard for Motorola to launch something similar stateside as well. Essentially what we have here could be thought of as an 18.5” tablet with a keyboard and mouse accessory, so what do you think? Would this be a product you might be interested in purchasing? Darksiders II for the Nintendo Wii U to feature special content

THQ confirmed this week that its action-adventure title Darksiders II will be released for the Wii U game console. That fact came as no surprise since Nintendo had already confirmed, back in June, that the game would be a launch title for the console. However, what we didn’t know at the time was that THQ would be packing the Wii U version with tons of extra content.

THQ has announced that the Wii U edition of the game will feature additional bonus content not included with other formats. The disc will feature the first DLC expansion pack Argul’s Tomb along with all pre-order bonuses from the other editions of the game. Altogether, the bonus content included for Wii U players will add an additional five hours of playable content.

The extra content also adds new legendary weapons and armor. THQ notes that the game will take advantage of the unique Wii U GamePad utilizing the touch screen to display map and objectives. The special touchscreen controller will also be used to give quick access to abilities and Death’s inventory.

The game will also use the Wii U Gyro functionality to allow players to evade enemy attacks, manipulate objects in the game, and steer their character during swimming and riding sequences using motion. This game has proven to be incredibly popular selling 247,000 copies back in August making it the top game for the month in the US according to NPD.
