Most Docks Should Work With The Lightning Adapter And iPhone 5

barbie-ipod-dock

A bit of good news among the seeming rubble that is the iPhone 5 launch: the $30 adapter you have to buy to connect your Lightning iPhone 5 to your old and busted iPod dock should stream audio without problem. The folks at audio company Line 6 did some “preliminary tests” and found that:

Line 6 is still testing their accessories with iPhone 5, but founder Marcus Ryle tells CDM, “Based on what’s been announced, for audio products that operate using USB Host mode and follow Apple approved methods such as CoreAudio and CoreMIDI, I would not expect there to be any technical issue.” I asked if they had anything to say about future Lightning support, but Ryle responded, “We continue to be excited about providing music-making devices for iOS devices, but we can’t comment on what additional products might be upcoming.”

Note the weasel words here (“Based on what’s been announced”). While we’re still in Schrodinger’s Cat territory with the adapter and dock combo, it seems that a reputable company is standing by the position that the new adapter will work with standard audio devices. However, the jury is still clearly out.

Core Audio is an Apple standard for playing sound on Macs and iPods/iPhones. Some docks may require special features that can’t be replicated through lightning, but the chances of that are slim. In the end, I guess we just have to wait and hope our devices survive the transition.

Facebook launches new Gifts service

As it stands, you can do a lot with Facebook. You can stalk your ex-lovers, you can show the world pictures of what you’ll be eating for dinner, and you can annoy almost every single one of your Facebook friends at the same time by constantly posting statuses of a political nature. Soon, you’ll be able to buy your friends real world gifts though Facebook with a new service called – you guessed it – Facebook Gifts.

Announced today, Facebook Gifts allows you to purchase a gift for any of your Facebook friends and have it delivered to their door. Did your friend just have a baby? Buy them a teddy bear. Did your friend just get dumped? Buy them a batch of cupcakes. Perhaps you have a friend who can’t function without caffeine? Good news for them, because it appears that Starbucks gift cards are available through this service as well.

Once Facebook Gifts has been fully implemented, you can buy a gift for your friends through birthday or engagement notifications or directly through their timeline. You don’t need to know their address as they’ll be the one who enters it in, and bad gift givers have no reason to fear – recipients will be able to choose the size, color, and flavor of their gift, and if they really don’t like it, they can exchange it out for something of equal value.

Facebook says that this new gifts service will roll out gradually, but those in the US will be getting it first. There isn’t a time frame for the full roll out of Facebook Gifts, likely owing to the social network‘s nearly 1 billion users around the world. Facebook promises more information on Gifts soon, so we’ll update you once new details are made public!

SimpleTV clarifies shipping dates, tells backers units will start arriving October 10th

According to Simple.TV, there have been articles circulating around the interwebs that may have caused confusion amongst parties interested about the shipping dates of its facile white puck. So, in order to induce some clarity, the folks behind the project have posted a Kickstarter update to let its backers know their Simple.TVs will be arriving soon enough — somewhere between October 10th and 15th, to be precise. On the other hand, Simple.TV is also set to start taking pre-orders on its website tomorrow from people who missed out on the crowd-funded party, with these particular units estimated to ship “within 20 days” after the order has been placed. The good news is we’re only a couple of weeks away from its long-overdue arrival; in the meantime, however, don’t forget we have our own hands-on for you to graciously pore over.

Samsung Galaxy Camera swings past the FCC with AT&T-capable 3G

Samsung Galaxy Camera swings past the FCC with AT&Tcapable 3G

Samsung made much ado of the Galaxy Camera coming in both 3G and 4G versions, but it wasn’t clear just which carriers would let us upload photos when away from WiFi. The FCC might have just given out a big clue with approval filings for two 3G editions. As it’s been tested for US clearance, the Android point-and-shoot in its EK-GC100 and EK-KC100 guises has support for HSPA-based 3G on the 850MHz and 1,900MHz bands used by AT&T and larger Canadian carriers — a possible hint of Big Blue’s ongoing connected devices push, but not a very promising discovery for most T-Mobile users or any CDMA customers. Before anyone bemoans the absences of LTE or support for more American networks, however, we’d note that this is just one filing and might not represent the totality of Samsung’s US plans, if we’re indeed looking at one or more US-bound examples. We’ll keep an eye out ahead of the Galaxy Camera’s international launch in October to see if there’s anything more in the FCC’s cards.

Mozilla Persona signins launch in beta, skip the social networking ball and chain

We all know those web pages where the only alternative to a site-specific login is a social networking account. That’s not very reassuring for anyone skittish about linking their commentary to a Facebook account relatives might see, if they’re even willing to join a social network in the first place. Mozilla has been aware of that hesitation long enough to have just released its long-in-development Persona sign-in service as a beta. Although it has the same kind of simple approach to a login as a Facebook or Twitter pop-up window, Persona’s emphasis is on privacy: it stops paying attention the moment credentials go through, keeping any diatribes or subscription details from landing in social streams or central databases. Users don’t have to play a rousing game of guess-the-username, either, as they just need to sign in with one or more familiar e-mail addresses and a single password. Persona faces an uphill battle in getting web developer adoption when the establishment sign-in services are open to hundreds of millions of internet citizens, but it does have The Times’ online crossword section, OpenPhoto and Voost as early poster children — and anything that lets the privacy-minded join the party has our vote.

European Lumia 920 prices surface

Like most major announcements these days, details about pricing and release dates were absent from Nokia‘s reveal of the incoming Lumia 920. That all changed today, with Nokia posting Lumia 920 prices for some European regions. Reuters reports that these prices weren’t actually set by Nokia, but rather by the retailers who purchase the phones in bulk from the company.

In some places, the Lumia 920 is more expensive than the Galaxy S III, but less expensive than the iPhone 5. We weren’t expecting it to cost more than the iPhone 5 naturally, but some analysts are worried that the Lumia 920 might be priced too high for a Windows Phone 8 device. For instance, in Sweden, the 32GB Lumia 920 will run 5,700 crowns ($860), which compares to the 4,515 crowns the 16GB Galaxy S III is going for at Expansys, and the 6,995 crowns the 32GB iPhone 5 is set to debut at.

In Italy we get a similar pricing structure. There, the phone with cost €599 ($770), with the 16GB S III selling for €529. It’s worth pointing out that one of Italy’s biggest carries, TIM, will be offering the Lumia 920 for less than the price of a Galaxy S III, but in many cases, we’re seeing retailers and carriers stick the Lumia 920 with a more expensive price tag.

According to some analysts, like Ovum’s Nick Dillon, that could be bad news for both Windows Phone 8 and Nokia. Users will probably expect to pay less for a Windows Phone 8 handset, he says, because they perceive it as a risk when compared to opting for an iPhone or Android device. Nokia is also relying on these new Windows Phone 8 handsets to pull it out of the financial rut its currently in, but with prices as high as the ones mentioned above, it might be difficult to get consumers to bite.

Whether or not the US will see similar prices is currently up in the air, but don’t expect the Lumia 920 to be cheap when it arrives Stateside. It is Nokia’s new flagship device after all, and historically flagship devices normally cost quite a bit of money. Will these prices dissuade potential buyers from picking up a Lumia 920 and adopting Windows Phone 8 as their new mobile OS? We shall see soon enough, as the Lumia 920 is scheduled to launch in Europe sometime in November.
