Apple Announces The New iPod nano: 2.5″ Display, Home Button, 38% Thinner, 7 Colors

X1Xmx

Of course all eyes are on the brand new iPhone, but everybody loves a good iPod refresh. Today, the company has announced a new batch of iPod models, not least of which is the brand new iPod nano.

The iPhone may have taken the cake in recent months, but the iPod is the most popular music player of all time, according to Apple. And with the iTunes refresh today, there’s no better time to learn about brand new iPods. But no more fodder, let’s get down to business.

iPod nano

Last year the revamped iPod nano wasn’t all that revamped — it was the same design as the 2010 model. But Apple has made some changes this year, re-introducing the display, and making it larger at 2.5-inches.. It looks a bit like a small phone.

It’s the thinnest iPod nano to date, at 5.4mm thick, 38 percent thinner. There are physical controls along the side of the device.

It also has a home button just like the iPhone.

It comes in 7 different color flavors, black, white, pink, green, blue, yellow, and red. The company has an FM tuner integrated with live pause, along with widescreen video. No letter boxing this time.

A fitness and pedometer have also been included, to compete with the likes of the Nike Fuel Band, and Moto ACTV. And as connectivity continues to be more and more important, the company has included Bluetooth.

As expected, Apple is putting the brand new lightning connector on the bottom of the device, and expanded the battery life to 30 hours of music.

In related news, Apple is announcing new color flavors for the much-loved iPod shuffle.

Apple announces fifth-generation iPod touch: 4-inch screen, 6.1mm thick, Siri included, starts at $299

Today at its iPhone launch event, Apple announced yet another piece of hardware: the fifth-generation iPod touch. As rumored, it has a 4-inch display, the same 326 ppi panel used on the new iPhone 5. As you might have guessed, this is also the thinnest iPod touch to date, measuring in at 6.1mm and weighing 88 grams (3.1 ounces). On the inside, it packs an A5 chip promising seven times the graphics performance of the last-gen model. The battery is rated for 40 hours of music playback, or eight hours of video — a slight improvement over the last-generation touch.

The rear camera has also gotten an upgrade: it’s now built on a 5-megapixel sensor, paired with a backside-illuminated f/2.4 lens. It also now shoots 1080p video, and Apple has also added image stabilization. And yes, it supports the same panorama shooting feature as the iPhone 5. The front camera, meanwhile, is 720p and supports FaceTime (over WiFi only, of course — no 4G models here).

If that image stabilization feature doesn’t do it for you, there’s also a protruding button on the back, to which you can attach a wrist strap — you know, so that if the shakes get really bad you at least won’t drop the thing. Perhaps the biggest news, though, is that the new iPod touch has Siri built in, making it the first non-iPhone device from Apple to get this feature. Finally, it comes loaded with iO6 and if you don’t know what that entails, well, we’ve got your feature summary right here.

The iPod touch will be available in two flavors: a 32GB model ($299) and a 64GB number ($399). It will be sold in five colors: “raw aluminum,” black, blue, yellow and red, and a (PRODUCT) RED version will also be available. Three hundred bucks too pricey for your next PMP? The last-generation touch will remain on the market, with the 16GB one going for $199 and the 32GB version selling for $249.

Apple refreshes iPod nano: 2.5-inch multitouch display, 16GB, Bluetooth, available this October for $149

Apple outs refreshed iPod nano 25inch multitouch display, 16GB, Bluetooth, available this October for $149

With news of Apple’s shining star, the iPhone 5, out of the way, the company’s shifting focus to its other major pillar: the iPod. Now seven generations in, the iPod nano is getting a refresh with a 38-percent thinner profile and svelte 5.4mm thickness. The multitouch screen now measures 2.5-inches across and sports a physical home button right below. Also packed in to this evolutionary PMP leap is an FM tuner with DVR-like functionality for playback control, Bluetooth radio (for wireless streaming support), inbuilt pedometer and, of course, that slimmed-down Lightning dock connector. And, according to Cupertino, this wee media player should last for up to 30 hours, making it the longest lasting nano the company’s ever built. You can snag this 16GB lil’ fella in a near rainbow of colors — seven in all — this October when it goes on sale for $149. Official PR after the break.

E-Clips video camera: The ultimate action cam on the go

Handheld cameras are often preferred over standard video cameras when capturing videos. This is because they offer a certain amount of ease and mobility due to their smaller and lighter size. Building on this concept, a designer, Christopher Terella has come up with the cool idea of an ‘ultimate action cam.’

The camera is being called ‘E-Clips video camera’ and is termed an action cam simply because its design makes it very easy to carry about, not only in your hand but also when you are on the go. For instance, you can easily hitch up the camera to your bike if you wish to capture a video while biking.  (more…)

Apple Releases A Totally Redesigned iTunes With iCloud Built-In

u7BT0

As with every new hardware release, Apple updates iTunes in order to support new devices. But the media software will receive a major update, as was announced today during Apple’s live event. The interface is now totally new with an edge-to-edge design. Browsing your music feels completely different with a great emphasis on album art. The left-side column is gone in the default configuration. But the most important improvement is that iCloud is now built-in.

You can switch back to a more traditional interface with listings of your music and browse by artist. The interface is much clearer with pop-up elements that look like iOS. Search was also improved.

A new feature called “Up next” will be available. The name suggests that it should work like the queue feature in Spotify. It allows you to put some tracks in a queue to play automatically after the current track.

The mini-player was redesigned. You can now search directly from the mini-player and even manage playlists. The iTunes Store was redesigned as well and looks a lot like the different stores in iOS 6. iTunes’ “In The Store” highlights is surely “inspired” by top tracks from Spotify, a fan-favorite feature.

Artists can share photos directly into people’s iTunes library. By doing this, Apple is probably quietly killing Ping.

It remains to be confirmed whether the software was redeveloped from the ground-up to get rid of the sluggishness of the current version. The updated software will be available in late October.

iTunes get a redesign

Earlier this morning, we mulled over the possibility of a new iTunes 11 announcement, and it seems that the speculation was somewhat spot on the money, where iTunes was announced to come with a redesign. Apple touts to have 200 million iTunes cloud users, and on the back of that, the redesign should please the majority of them. After all, the new layout does seem to be easier on the eyes compared to its predecessor.

iTunes on desktop is on the receiving end of direct integration with iCloud. We do think that folks use iTunes on their computers not because they love to, but because there was not much choice if you wanted to dance to Apple’s tune. Having said that, the latest version of iTunes certainly makes the iTunes desktop experience a far more enjoyable one, at least according to what was revealed. Some folks might even throw allegations in Apple’s direction that this idea is a legacy of Zune’s software. What do you think?

Apple announces redesigned iTunes for Mac, Windows and iOS devices

Apple announces redesigned iTunes for Mac, Windows and iOS devices

It’s gone through quite a few minor revisions as of late, but Apple has today taken the wraps off a fairly big redesign of not just iTunes for OS X and Windows, but iOS devices as well. The latter will be making its debut with iOS 6 on the 19th, and you can expect a simpler interface in all incarnations — “dramatically simpler,” according to Apple’s Eddie Cue — with a carousel up top paired with a flattened grid of icons below. The desktop version also sports a new mini player, which now boasts search functionality while staying decidedly minimalistic, and a new “Up Next” feature lets you cue up songs and see what’s coming at a glance. Those UI changes naturally extend to the store component as well, and Apple is also promising improved performance throughout. No firm release date for the desktop version just yet, but Apple says we can expect it sometime in “late October.”
