— The issue:

States and local governments have the primary responsibility for education in the United States. But the federal government gets a big say, too, by awarding billions in aid, often with strings attached.

OCZ’s new Vector SSD breaks cover at IDF, packs in-house developed Indilinx controller

OCZ's new Vector SSD breaks cover, packs wholly inhouse Indilinx controller

As we were wandering the floor today at IDF 2012, we happened upon an OCZ rep who pulled the company’s new 2.5-inch SATA 3 SSD out of his pocket and let us get our mitts on it. Called the Vector, it will replace the well-received Vertex 4 at the top of OCZ’s lineup. Like its predecessor, the Vertex packs an Indilinx controller, but this time it’s the Barefoot 3, which was developed totally in-house without any assistance from Marvell designs. You can expect to see 256GB and 512GB versions of the Vector hit the market in Q4, with other sizes possibly showing up after. Of course, IOPS, read/write speeds and pricing remain a mystery, but we can share the gallery of shots below.

Myriam Joire contributed to this report.

’19 Kids & Counting’: Josie Reaches A Health Milestone, Receiving Her Last Preemie Shot (VIDEO)

It was an important day for little Josie Duggar on “19 Kids & Counting.” When she was born, things weren’t so rosie for Josie. She came three months sooner than anticipated, and weighed only 1 lb., 6 oz. Now she’s two, and ready to take the last of the shots doctors ordered after her premature birth.

Poor Josie, though, had been through enough of these that she’d come to associate doctors with pain. So she was ready with the tears and the wailing before anything even started.

“The minute they’re done I scoop her up in my arms,” Michelle said. “What a milestone. Josie’s last RSV shot. … That’s huge, because we know that she is moving on.” The RSV shot is given to most premature babies, as they are at higher risk of contracting respiratory syncytial virus.

Sharp further cuts bonuses and salaries to stay above water, save $180 million

Sharp HQSharp is already in full-on belt-tightening mode, and it’s not just cutting jobs to keep its staffing costs in line with shrinking finances. The sinking tech giant is doubling the size of executives’ salary cuts to 10 percent for a year-long period, all the while slashing planned 2013 bonuses to half of what they were in June. Sadly, everyday workers will have to take some of the same medicine. They’re facing similar bonus cuts and will have to take a 7 percent drop in salary for the same year. Between these steps and cuts to extras like travel allowances, Sharp hopes to save ¥14 billion in the current fiscal year, or about $180 million — a small amount next to the $2 billion in credit the company just recently obtained, but also a sign of just how much penny-pinching is involved in keeping the corporate ship afloat. Let’s hope the sacrifice pays off.

Sony NEX-6 is official

It was just one week ago when we took a look at a rather crisp image of the Sony NEX-6 complete with a range of lenses in tow, whetting our appetite for what is to come. Well, fast forward to today, and here we are with the official announcement of the Sony NEX-6 that will definitely burn quite a large hole in your pocket, although not that bad as the Sony A99. For €950, you will not only get the Sony NEX-6, but it comes with a lens kit as well (16mm to 50mm). This looks set to be an entry level DSLR shooter with a 16.1-megapixel sensor, sporting built-in Wi-Fi connectivity to deliver optimal sharing of images compatible devices. I guess this translates to a hassle-free image transfer process.

Sony will alsoo throw in a wide range of applications such as PlayMemories to make life easier for the newly minted shutterbug in your family. Not only that, the Sony NEX-6 is supposedly easier to use for a beginner as it can track the subject in focus, while shooting burst shots at up to 10 frames per second. Touting intuitive ergonomics and quick access to settings, the Sony NEX-6 does seem to shape up to be a decent November purchase. Enjoy the photo gallery in the extended post.

Sony α99 (A99) announced

The Sony α99 (or A99 if that rolls off your eyes easier) has just been announced. We first heard about it through speculated photos that were snapped using the Sony α99 by a certain Michael Yamashita who since then had respectfully requested those photos to be removed, which we complied. Not only that, a bunch of Sony α99 images were also leaked just yesterday to increase the anticipation of such a DSLR. We are then glad to announce that the latest high-end full-frame DSLR from Sony, the Sony α99, has just been revealed to the world where it carries with it a new 24.3-megapixel CMOS sensor.

Apart from that, it also does Full HD videos with continous autofocus for some truly stunning home-made videos, making your family and friends wonder whether you hired a professional to capture the recent family event or not. The electronic viewfinder itself also comes with 100% field coverage, and just in case you have half a mind to carry the Sony α99 with you all day long, you will be glad to know that the magnesium alloy body tips the scale at only 733 grams, boasting a comfortable and ergonomic design to boot. It will arrive in markets this October for €2,800 sans any lens kit. Enjoy the photo gallery of the Sony α99 after the jump.

Sony DSC-RX1 announced, is world’s first full-frame 24-megapixel point and shoot digital camera

It was just yesterday that we took a gander at the leaked image of the Sony DSC-RX1, and here we are with the official announcement on what could very well be the first full-frame 24-megapixel point and shoot digital camera in the world. Coming with a 35mm-sized sensor, the Sony DSC-RX1 is capable of shooting 24-megapixel JPEG or RAW stills, in addition to handling Full HD 1080p video recording in a cinch.

The fixed Carl Zeiss f/2.0 Sonnar T lens on the Sony DSC-RX1 comes with full manual controls, where you benefit from a maximum aperture of f/2.0 with 9 iris blades, delivering a shallow depth of field with attractive bokeh. As for the premium multi-layered T coating, that reduces ghost and flare caused by light reflection.

A quartet of four focusing modes, Single-shot AF, Continuous AF, Manual Focus and Direct Manual Focus are part of the equation, and you can select a maximum ISO setting of 25600, letting you capture images in low light conditions sans flash, although do expect plenty of noise to happen at that setting. The asking price for the Sony DSC-RX1 when it arrives this November? A whopping €3,200!
