YouTube releases standalone app for iOS, tablet-tailored version in the works

YouTube releases standalone app for iOS, tablettailored version in the works

There was much (some?) tearing of clothes and gnashing of teeth when Apple pulled its YouTube app from iOS 6. That pain was lessened by Google’s promise of a standalone app to replace it, and now Big G’s version has arrived, ready to be installed on the legions of new iPhones to come. YouTube’s touting the app’s fresh channel guide — that lets users swipe from left to right to reveal a screen with easy access to their channel subscriptions — and better search features as the main attractions of the new software. Oh, and for folks with ten-inch Apple screens, YouTube has assured us that its engineers are back in the lab cooking up an iPad-specific version set to show up “in the coming months.” Until then, the phone version will have to suffice, and you can grab it at the iTunes source link below.

Google Fights Back: Official YouTube for iOS Is Here [YouTube]

Last month, Apple yanked the YouTube app that’d been collecting mold on your iPhone since 2007. On the one hand, nobody will miss it in iOS 6, because it was terrible. On the other, YouTube. But fret not: it’s back. More »

GoDaddy restores service after hacking incident

Earlier today, the Internet was abuzz about web hosting company GoDaddy being hacked by the hacker collective known as Anonymous, and in an announcement over on Twitter, GoDaddy mentioned that the majority of their customer-hosted sites are now up and running, stating, “Most customer hosted sites back online. We’re working out the last few kinks for our site & control centers. No customer data compromised.” That certainly sounds like a ray of light at the end of a long, dark tunnel, doesn’t it?

Anonymous Own3r claimed responsibility for today’s attack that actually affected numerous sites, where GoDaddy’s DNS servers were taken offline and the downtime clocked in at several hours. Not only that, Anonymous Own3r claims that this particular attack was just from a single member and not made on Anonymous’ behalf, making us wonder what happens when the collective flex their muscles.

GoDaddy spokeswoman Elizabeth Driscoll mentioned, “All services are restored and at no time was sensitive customer information, such as credit card data, passwords, names, addresses, ever compromised.” Does that make you sleep easier at night if you hosted a site on GoDaddy?

Sony Xperia S Boot Manager lets you perform multi-boots for various ROMs

When the world was first introduced to dual operating system environment on a single computer, it was definitely quite an achievement. In the world of smartphones, too, is quite a big deal, and XDA Developers member Letama has managed to come up with the Sony Xperia S Boot Manager that allows you to, theoretically, multi-boot different firmware, now how about that? To flesh out such an example, how about running CyanogenMod 9 or 10 loaded onto your smartphone and have it run alongside stock Sony firmware?

Talk about getting the best of both worlds, where you are able to live off the bells and whistles that CyanogenMod offers, and yet lets you switch back to stock firmware through a quick reboot in order for you to make use of the camera or HDMI functions. Of course, the lack of camera functionality is a bit of a letdown in CyanogenMod, since there are times when one needs to launch the camera quickly to capture an impromptu moment. The Sony Xperia S Boot Manager has yet to see a public release, but you can check it out in action above.

Iran censors “dollar” in text messages

Iran has had issues with the Internet in the past, and this time around, the world of text messages has been affected by Iranian policies as well. With the Iranian currency (rial) dropping to a new record low against the US dollar today, shedding nearly 8% in its value, it seems that the word “dollar” is now officially banned across mobile phone text services, as well as select Exchange websites.

Of course, not only the word “dollar” in English is censored, but a similar meaning in Farsi also got hit by the government’s banhammer, meaning such a message will not be received as intended. In Farsi, the word for “foreign money” was given the chop, but since there is no way to wield a blanket ban, there are methods to get around the situation such as using the word “USD” or taking advantage of the $ symbol. Iran’s two main mobile phone service providers, MCI and Irancell, stepped forward to say that they are not the ones behind the filtering, rightfully washing their hands off this “responsibility”.

Nokia reveals new City Lens augmented reality app for Windows Phone 8 lineup

Nokia reveals new City Lens augmented reality app for Windows Phone 8 lineup

Just last week, Nokia’s augmented reality app known as City Lens broke free of its beta shackles, but its developers are hardly sitting on their laurels as they help prepare the company’s Windows Phone 8 handsets for store shelves. New to the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820, Nokia has announced a refined version of City Lens replete with 3D icons and the ability to disable suggestions that aren’t within the line of sight. Also on deck, users will be able to query their surroundings more quickly by pinning categories to the home screen and storing favorite searches. As one final addition, Nokia will be introducing the ability to use City Lens in both portrait and landscape orientation. Unfortunately, the company hasn’t committed to these new features for the Windows Phone 7.5 version of its app. For a quick peek of what’s next, just hop the break for a video teaser from Nokia.

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for Verizon Galaxy Nexus “soon”

“Soon” is a relative word, and if you ask owners of the Galaxy Nexus who are subscribed to Verizon Wireless, they will tell you that “soon” cannot come fast enough. Well, the pre-release version of Jelly Bean for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus was spotted at the end of last month, and even Sprint’s Galaxy Nexus had already started to enjoy Android 4.1 Jelly Bean goodness, so where has all the love for Verizon’s Galaxy Nexus gone to?

A Galaxy Nexus owner who figured out that there is nothing quite like a persistent spirit decided to bang on Verizon’s door non-stop, and along the way, might have uncovered possible internal insights concerning the Jelly Bean update process. It seemed that Verizon implied Samsung to be the party at fault for the Galaxy Nexus’ non-Jelly Bean status to date. Apart from that, an internal Galaxy Nexus Jelly Bean update release date could very well be on the horizon, so I guess that all we can do now is sit down, hang tight and wait. Patience is, after all, a virtue, isn’t it?

Shimi the personal robotic DJ

Robots seem to pervade every segment of our lives these days, and if you are one who loves to paint the town red each time the weekend beckons, then you would not go wrong with the Shimi personal robotic DJ. This is one nifty robot that relies on the cloud as well as smartphone voice commands in order to play music, and hopefully, rock your party. Trust startup company Tovbot to think of this particular idea, and Shimi is right now a Kickstarter project that will need the help of the masses in order to turn it into reality.

The creation of roboticists from Georgia Tech, MIT, and IDC, Shimi will make use of today’s prevalent smartphone technology in order to play music and select songs based on your taste or mood. It comes across as a cute and shiny robot who dances to entertain, and yet delivers a service which resembles Pandora in some ways. The final version will cost $199 if it is realized, but you can “invest” in it for $129 a pop.
