Tommy Thompson Embellishes His 9/11 Response In Wisconsin Senate Race

WASHINGTON — Wisconsin Senate candidate Tommy Thompson (R) appears to be exaggerating his response to the 9/11 terror attacks, saying he was handing out bandages in New York the morning after, when he was actually delivering a speech in Washington, D.C.

Thompson, who is locked in a tight race with Democratic Rep. Tammy Baldwin, was the Secretary of Health and Human Services when America was attacked on Sept. 11, 2001, and he’s been touting his role in the response on the campaign trial while simultaneously casting Baldwin as a far-left radical because she voted against a bill that included a 9/11 resolution.

Thompson’s agency did indeed mobilize a massive response to the attacks, including shifting multiple teams of doctors, morgue workers and supplies to both New York and the Pentagon area.

Giant Working Instagram Camera Is This Year’s Costume To Beat

Last year a working Nikon DSLR costume wowed us, but with the continued rise of smartphone photography, who wants to wear a clunky dedicated camera this Halloween? Not Eric Micotto, who totally one-ups last year’s effort with a working Instagram camera getup. More »

NYT: Google actively trialing same-day delivery from retail for the chronically impatient

NYT Google actively trialing sameday delivery from retail for the chronically impatient

Rumors have floated for the better part of a year that Google has been prepping a same-day delivery service that would pressure eBay and make even Amazon Prime seem pokey. If we’re to believe a pair of New York Times contacts, it’s much closer to reality. Google staffers and their close connections are supposedly in the midst of testing the extra-fast shipping option in San Francisco with at “at least one” major clothing chain participating alongside local shops. Most details are still missing, including the price premium for waiting mere hours as well as the implied mobile option; Google certainly isn’t talking on the record. We’re almost hoping that the story is bogus, as the last thing we need is one less reason to step outside.

Joel McHale Guest Starred On ‘Bill Nye The Science Guy’ Before ‘Community’ And ‘The Soup’ (VIDEO)

Community” fans are all (im)patiently waiting for NBC to decide when and where exactly October 19 is going to be so we can catch up with the Greendale gang and start Season 4.

Sure, we’ve got the cast making fun videos and tweeting up a storm; we still get weekly doses of star Joel McHale on “The Soup,” and he even did a turn on this week’s “Sons of Anarchy,” but it’s just not the same. The only way we want to see these guys now is in something that kind of/sort of/maybe resembles a scenario that the study group would find themselves in. Which is exactly what this blast from the past is …

Watch the video below to see McHale in a 1998 appearance on Emmy Award-winning “Bill Nye the Science Guy,” in an episode titled “Fluids.” McHale is doing his best Jack Nicholson in the courtroom, with lines like “You can’t handle the fluid!” Seriously.

Special edition Charizard 3DS XL announced for Japan

Nintendo has introduced yet another 3DS XL variant that will probably never see the light of day outside of Japan. While we’re okay with that most of the time, we have to say this latest 3DS XL – which features an image of Charizard on the outside – looks pretty snazzy. Thing is, even if you live in Japan, you’re still going to have a hard time getting your hands on one.

That’s because only those who win a raffle will get the chance to buy one. Yes, we said “buy” there, as those who win the raffle won’t just be given one for free. The raffle will run from November 3 to November 26, and prospective entrants can either go to one of the Pokemon Center stores in Japan to enter or mail in their entry form.

Winners of the raffle will be notified on December 7, and then they’ll be able to purchase their Charizard-laden 3DS XL between December 15 and January 14. This special edition 3DS XL will cost ¥18,900, which is right around $237, and from what we can tell, there aren’t any games that come bundled with it. It’ll just be you, Charizard, and a 3DS XL that you may just want to leave in the packaging, considering how hard it was to get.

As far as Pokemon-themed handhelds go, this is one of the better ones, and there have been a lot of them throughout the years. The fact that its availability will be so limited in Japan means that there’s almost no chance of it ever becoming available in the US or Europe, which is definitely a bummer considering how nice it looks. Oh well – it looks like we’ll just have to settle for the Charizard posters plastered all over and the Charizard-themed bedspread that ushers us into the dream world every night.

Felt Star Wars Creations: Stitch Wars

As you know, it’s pretty hard for us to pass up fun Star Wars items around these parts, so when I saw these quirky felt Star Wars plushes over on Etsy, I had to oblige and post them.

felt jawa r2 d2

They’re made by E. Binard, and they’re some of the cutest Star Wars creations I’ve seen. You can choose from a felt Jawa, R2-D2 or Yoda, but I personally dig the hand-stitched AT-AT and Millennium Falcon. I bet that it could even make the Kessel Run in under twelve parsecs.

The felt Admiral Ackbar is pretty nifty too – though the fishhead will constantly be reminding you that whatever you’re planning on doing is a trap.

Prices for these handmade Star Wars felt creations range from $40 to $195 (USD) depending on the size and complexity of the design. Check them all out over on E. Binard’s Etsy shop.

Go Download Xbox Smartglass For Your Android Phone

Xbox Smartglass, Microsoft’s crazy experimental second-screen software, just got an Android version of the app today. Previously, it was only available on Windows Phone 7, which, come on, isn’t going to lead to mass adoption. Also worth noting: it got a release the same day as Windows 8 came out. A coincidence? With Microsoft, who knows. (more…)

Windows 8 upgrade diary: the buying experience

Windows 8 upgrade diary part one: the buying experience

There were balloons. There were streamers. There were brand new Ultrabooks, members of staff unfurling banners, and — once other customers started to arrive — there was even a vibe of genuine excitement for today’s official launch of Windows 8 in the UK. But whichever aisle I scanned, nowhere was to be found what I had come to buy: a Windows 8 disc for desktop upgraders. It was a faltering start, but it was also strangely symbolic of my mission — namely, to explore what Microsoft’s latest operating system can do for regular desktop folk. People who, in other words, aren’t yet looking to invest in touch-enabled monitors or laptops or all-in-ones; who rarely get the chance to lean back with a media-consumption tablet; and who simply want to upgrade their traditional tower PC before getting on with their lives. Read on past the break and you can begin this potentially short, hopefully sweet journey with me, starting with a quick rundown of my test rig (which also happens to be my mission critical work computer) and an anti-climactic revelation about whether, in the end, I ever found the software box I was looking for.

Google Lost the Nexus 4 in a Bar

In a very, heh, familiar story, Google apparently lost the upcoming Nexus 4 in a bar last month. Yes, the LG Nexus phone we expect to be unveiled next week. Yes, the phone that’s probably going to take the crown as the best Android phone available when it comes out. More »
