Stockton Nursing Home Slaying: Woman And Two Nieces Victims Of Triple-Murder

STOCKTON, Calif. — An 88-year-old woman was fatally shot in an upscale California senior home and her two nieces were slain in an apparent triple murder that ended when the suspected gunman was found dead, police said.

Investigators suspect Colin McGrattan, 45, killed his ex-wife, Jackie Arata, 57; her sister, Kathleen Arata, 64; and the women’s aunt, Chizuko Kenishi, before shooting himself Monday at O’Connor Woods Senior Living center in Stockton.

Canon 5D Mark III 2013 update paves the way for high-end HDMI video

It was a fair number of years ago that digital cameras were able to record video as well, and this particular feature first appeared on consumer class digital cameras before making their way towards the high end DSLRs. Of course, over the course of time, it made perfect sense for video recording quality to improve, and with the latest upcoming firmware update that is coming next year for the Canon 5D Mark III, videographers will be able to rely on said DSLR to record uncompressed HDMI video, now how about that?

Professionals who have been hankering after better quality images and videos will definitely find the April 2013 (that is when it is scheduled, anyway) update to be one worth looking forward to. Canon shared about this update, “When shooting video, HDMI Output makes possible the recording of high-definition uncompressed video data (YCbCr 4:2:2, 8 bit) from the EOS 5D Mark III to an external recorder via the camera’s HDMI terminal. This, in turn, facilitates the editing of video data with minimal image degradation for greater on-site workflow efficiency during motion picture and video productions. Additionally, video being captured can be displayed on an external monitor, enabling real-time, on-site monitoring of high-definition video during shooting.”

This firmware update would also mean the Canon 5D Mark III will be competitive with Nikon’s D4 and D800 SLRs, as all three will be able to output uncompressed 4:2:2 video via HDMI.

Qualcomm and Project Ray announce multi-use smartphone for the blind

Qualcomm and Project RAY have teamed up to create a multi-use smartphone for the visually impaired and blind. Referred to as the Project RAY phone, it uses a specially-created user interface that is optimized for eye-free operation. The device is designed to reduce the number of gadgets a blind or visually impaired person uses throughout the day by offering all of their features in a single device.

The majority of blind individuals use simple phones for making calls. Obviously, the average smartphone is not something that can be used sans-sight. To make life easier, the visually impaired use a variety of specialty devices, which are more expensive than their normal counterparts and require individuals to use and keep track of many items.

The Project RAY phone has been created specifically to eradicate the need for many of these devices by performing the actions itself. The phone is based on an off-the-shelf Qualcomm-powered Android smartphone, this eye-free mobile device offers constant broadband connectivity and an adaptive UI. The RAY smartphone is currently in the testing phase, with 100 participants in Israel.

The interface allows users to touch any location on the screen, which will then become the starting point for selecting a feature. It is synchronized with Israel’s Central Library for the Blind, Visually Impaired and Handicapped audio books. Services include texting, phone calls, navigation, social network services, object recognition, remote assistance, audio book reading, and more. Said Don Rosenberg, executive VP and general counsel for Qualcomm, “We believe the Project RAY device will enhance the ability of blind and visually impaired people to access resources and information independently.”

LG records a ‘solid’ $138.57 million net profit for Q3, keeps the positive trend going

LG Electronics has reported its earnings for Q3 2012, notching its third straight quarter of positive income with a net profit of 157 billion won ($138.57 million) and “solid” performances from its home theater and mobile businesses. Revenue is down from the same period last year, but seeing as it’s actually making money this time around it’s probably still reason to celebrate. On the mobile side of the aisle it reports an operating profit of $19.42 million with slightly higher sales than Q2, mostly thanks to those LTE smartphones it’s been rolling out. Its home entertainment biz noted a rise in LCD sales, with 3D TVs and LED-lit models growing from last quarter in most markets. Looking towards the future it’s obviously going all-in on the Optimus G (although our interests run towards the Nexus G that should debut next week), and also looks for its Ultra HD television to raise its standing as a premium brand. Check the press release after the break and PDF linked below for more numbers if that’s your thing.

Digital Storm’s Bolt gaming machine claims to be future-proof

Of course, we would not expect anyone to take Digital Storm’s claim for their Bolt gaming PC to be future-proof, as any gamer worth his or her salt knows that this is not how the gaming world works, especially when it comes to hardware. Still, if you are interested to see what the Bolt is all about, read on – it comes with a custom designed chassis that delivers an extremely pleasing thin form factor to the eyes, without sacrificing on room for future upgradability, with most of the grunt work being borne by a 4.6GHz overclocked CPU.

The Bolt measures a mere 3.6” wide and is 14” tall, where its thin chassis was specially designed to effectively dissipate heat despite holding the most updated and fastest components on the market. Capable of holding up to three hard drives, a couple of SSDs and 1 mechanical, you know that it has unparalleled storage flexibility – at least for a home-based gaming rig. Prices for the Digital Storm Bolt start from $999 upwards, depending on the hardware configuration of your choice, so take your pick.

Nikon 1 V2: An Interchangeable-Lens Camera For Clueless Photographers (And No One Else)

The Nikon 1 V2 is a total overhaul of its predecessor. The hope is that the higher-resolution sensor, bigger body, and amateur-friendly features will turn a legion of aspiring beginners into lens-swapping, accessory-toting photographers. We think? Otherwise this camera makes no sense. More »

Nikon 1 V2 mirrorless camera handson! video

If you followed the launch of Nikon’s J2 interchangeable-lens compact recently, then waking up to today’s announcement of a higher-specced V2 probably won’t come as a huge surprise. Nevertheless, whereas the J2 was frustratingly incremental compared to the J1, the V2 will likely represent a more significant upgrade when it lands on shelves at the end of November. For a start, the magnesium alloy camera has been bestowed with a sizable grip, which makes a vast difference to its ergonomics — it feels much more secure and manageable in the hand, without hurting the small and lightweight appeal of this form factor. Nikon has found room for a pop-up flash too, which is certainly nice to have. The mode dial has moved to the top of the camera and now includes the four main shooting modes (P/S/A/M) — a change which, in one fell swoop, helps the entire remainder of the control system to become more intuitive and accessible. A new processing engine allows the camera to shoot 15 fps with continuous focus (versus 10 fps with the V1), with Nikon claiming that AF speed has been improved as well. And as for the bad news? It’s waiting for you after the break.
