Mouse Eggs and Stem Cells, Oh My!

Sometimes, as I am perusing the days news for interesting information to amuse you with, I come across something that leaves me in shock. It doesnt happen often, but when it does, I find myself wondering just where the heck we’re heading, and I have to admit, I feel a small shiver of disappointment when I realize I may not be around long enough to find out.

For example, where do you think we’re headed with this tidbit of technology? Japanese researchers have found a way to manipulate stem cells in such a way as to be able to make “mouse eggs” that will actually produce healthy mouse offspring that are capable of reproduction themselves.

What? Does this suggest that someday we will be able to produce human eggs? If we could, would we? Should we? Here’s what this might mean, because stem cells can morph into almost any cell in the body, it would at least have life altering reproductive implications for almost anyone, of any age.

Stem cells are not without their own stigma, (as they are harvested from embryos) so its important to note that these “mouse eggs” have also been produced from something called pluripotent stem cells, which are similar to embryonic cells, but they come from adult skin, or blood cells. So where do we go from here? Is this science at its best, opening the door to life changing technology, or is this a process by which we will be changing the natural order of thins forever, and potentially turning baby making into manufacturing and human life into a commodity?

Still, it is pretty awesome I just wish I could stick around long enough to know how it all turns out.

Memoto Wearable Camera Snaps Pictures of Your Entire Life

Unless you have memory problems, I’ve never understood why someone would want to wear a camera or camcorder on their body to record whatever they’re doing all of the time. I’ve yet to see anybody that’s interesting enough for me to want to know what they’re doing every second of every day. If you are the sort who thinks you need to chronicle everything you do, a new camera has turned up on Kickstarter called the Memoto.

memoto wearable camera

While its image capturing algorithm isn’t as sophisticated as the similar, but more expensive Autographer, this might be an interesting little wearable camera for use if you’re on vacation for instance. It’s very small and designed to be worn on the clothing, and takes a still photo automatically every 30 seconds. There are no controls or buttons to press – the camera does its thing with no input from the wearer. It automatically shuts off when you remove it or place it in your pocket.

The camera charges via USB and promises enough battery life and data storage for two days of use. When the camera is connected to a computer to charge up, the photographs are automatically uploaded to Memoto servers and organized using GPS information and time and date stamps for easy searching and cataloging. Companion web, iOS and Android apps provide easy access to your images.

The Memoto will retail for $279(USD), but early Kickstarter supporters can get one for as little as $199. The project is seeking $50,000 and has already raised nearly double that amount with over a month to go.

iPad mini Apple event: we’re here!

It’s time for the main event here in California down at Apple’s main event that’s sure to bring on a variety of new hardware bits and software updates, including the rumored iPad mini first and foremost. This update to the iPad line will quite likely tie in with either digital media sales or Education with the new handheld smaller-sized iPad coming in with a lower cost than its larger compatriot. This event may well play host to a set of other hardware refreshes as well.

With a 10AM PST start time we’ll be off and running with all the news you can possibly handle right here in the SlashGear main news feed and in our fabulous Apple portal. There you’ll see the iPad mini along with refreshes – rumored, mind you – of the Mac mini, iMac (probably not), Retina MacBook Pro (that being a 13-inch iteration), and more! Software will include a slightly updated iOS 6.1, updates to iBooks and other odd Apple-made apps, and a push for more.

AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 2 available this November 9th

If you are on the lookout for the new Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from AT&T, then you will be pleased to hear that AT&T has announced for the phablet’s release to happen this coming November 9th, with pre-orders beginning from October 25th onward. It will cost you $299.99 a pop then, where it comes with a two-year agreement, where you are able to pick it up from either brick and mortar AT&T stores or via online channels.

You can say that the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 from AT&T would be one of the more powerful Android-powered smartphones out there with its 1.6GHz quad-core Exynos processor, where it will play along nicely on AT&T’s 4G LTE network. Having said that, if your area has plenty of LTE coverage, then the Galaxy Note 2 will be worth checking out if you are in the market for a new phablet, especially when there is a 5.5″ HD Super AMOLED display to play around with, coupled with the latest Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system. Live From Apple’s San Jose iPad Mini Event At 10AM Pacific/1PM Eastern

IMG_1601

Apple’s event at the California Theater in San Jose is today, and we’re going to be live on the scene providing a blow-by-blow of the company’s announcements as they happen. Of course, this year Apple is also live streaming the event itself, via the web and Apple TV, so you can also follow along yourself.

But Apple’s live stream doesn’t have our color commentary, and you might also be stuck at work, where spending two hours watching online video is harder to get away with than watching text flow by on a screen. What I’m saying is, we’ve got you covered.

Keep an eye out at the Apple tag page for more in-depth looks at specific announcements, and follow along with us starting at 10 AM PT/1PM ET as Apple potentially unveils its iPad mini, a new Retina MacBook Pro, and a whole bunch of other goodies.

Patent Office throws out a favorite invention of Steve Jobs

Apple logoThe Patent Office in the US has decided that one of Steve Jobs’ favorite inventions is not exactly worthy of a patent, and should this decision remain, then you can be sure that Samsung will only need to pay just 80% of their original $1.05 billion fine which was handed down to them in a judgment not too long ago. Steve Jobs did say when he rolled out the original iPhone all those years ago, “And boy have we patented it.” The patent in question is this, a rather clever screen trick that convinced the late Steve Jobs that Apple could very well roll out a decent smartphone.

FOSS Patents’ Florian Mueller has called it a “non-final” ruling, where the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office declared that the so-called ’381 patent was invalid. Apple called it “inertial scrolling,” where in the trial itself, it was called the “rubber band” effect. The USPTO has so far decided that claim 19 is invalid because it was anticipated by a couple of previously filed patents, where an European one was filed nearly 10 years ago by Luigi Lira and, in an ironic twist, a 2010 Apple patent.

iPad mini gets last-minute fondle before main event

We’re just moments away from the start of Apple‘s special event where it’s heavily-rumored that the company will announce the iPad mini, along with some other goodies as well. However, the rumors and leaks have yet to slow up, as we’ve just feasted our own eye balls on a video that shows the iPad mini in all its miniature glory.

Posted up by ETrade Supply, the video shows the iPad mini next to the regular 9.7-inch iPad, which definitely gives us a solid size comparison between the two devices. The person in the video guides us through the exterior of the iPad mini, but sadly, we don’t get to see the device power on despite what the title of video implies.

On the top of the iPad mini there’s the power/standby button on the right, with a 3.5mm headphone jack on the opposite end. On the right side of the device you’ll find the volume buttons, as well as the ringer/silent switch. The left side has nothing, and the bottom has the Lightning connector and speakers. And of course, on the back we have the rear-facing camera.

What’s probably the biggest surprise according to the video is the device he is holding doesn’t appear to have a front-facing camera. We’re not sure if its just a prototype that the person has in his hands, but we’re seriously hoping the real thing has a front-facing camera. In either case, we’ll know shortly what Apple has in stock for the iPad mini. Stay tuned into our Apple hub for the latest news!
