Student Loan Debt Ranking By State Shows Continued Rise

NEW YORK — College students who graduated with bachelor’s degrees in 2011 left school with the largest average student debt load in history, according to a new report.

She class of 2011 came out with an average of $26,600 in student loan debt, a 5 percent increase from $25,250 in 2010, according to the Project on Student Debt at The Institute for College Access & Success.. The increase, in line with recent years, shows student debt continues to grow faster than inflation.

“As debt levels rise, fear of loans can prevent students from getting the education they need to succeed,” said Lauren Asher, president of The Institute for College Access & Success, a nonprofit research and advocacy group. “Students and parents need to know that, even at similar looking schools, debt levels can be wildly different. And, if they do need to borrow to get through school, federal student loans, with options like income-based repayment, are the safest way to go.”

Sony Alpha firmware updates bring record button disabling on NEX7, DSLR lens compensation improvements

Sony’s NEX-7 may be fast approaching its first birthday, but that doesn’t mean the company’s ready to give up on pushing out updates. The camera’s first new firmware version, 1.01, should be hitting today, bringing with it the ability to disable the Movie Record button to avoid accidental taps (finally!), boosted image quality with a wide-angle lens, improved audio playback and expanded EV bracketing. An option to disable the EVF eye sensor doesn’t appear to be included with this revision, unfortunately. Other updates hitting at the same time include E-mount lens firmware v.01 that’ll enable NEX-5R/NEX-6 Hybrid AF functionality with older lenses, A65/A77 firmware v1.06 and A37/A57 firmware v1.03, both of which deliver the ability to enable/disable the movie record button while also adding a variety of lens compensation options for select Alpha optics. All of these updates should now be live — head over to the source link below for the hook-up.

Facebook opens mobile ads for apps to all developers, keeps them on the money train

Facebook opens mobile ads for apps to all developers, keeps them on the money train

It’s no secret that Facebook saw FarmVille for iOS as writing on the wall: it had to either tap into mobile app revenue or risk losing income (and marketing-savvy developers) whenever someone left the web. Following a beta this summer, the company’s solution to its dilemma is now open to everyone. All developers on the social network can build ads that link from Facebook’s Android and iOS apps to either Google Play or the App Store — offering both an easy plug for their native apps and that all-important ad revenue for Facebook. The system currently takes a shotgun approach and may pitch social networkers for apps they already have or don’t want, but it should be refined in the next few months to where some curious purchasers won’t even have to leave Facebook to load that hot new title. Hopefully the increased recognition for mobile developers is worth sullying our once pristine news feeds.

New Surface video released shows off cool features

On Monday, Microsoft kicked off its marketing campaign for the Surface with the dance-heavy video “The Surface Movement.” This evening, a new Surface marketing video has been released, which shows off the Surface’s cool features, offering a nice look at the cover/keyboard in particular. Microsoft is dropping $400 million on marketing the Surface.

Surface measures in at 9.3mm thick, which, you can see from the video below, is pretty thin. The device features one USB port, and has a 10.6″ ClearType display. The detachable cover is a mere 3mm thick, and is pressure sensitive with low-profile keys, doubling as a trackpad. It runs Windows RT. Check out The Tao of the Surface for more info.

The Surface went up for pre-order on October 16th, and is available from $499, which makes it pretty stiff competition for the same-priced 16GB iPad. The $499 version features 32GB of storage, and does not include the cover. The price jumps to $599 if you get it with the Touch Cover. The last option comes in at $699, and offers 64GB of storage with a black Touch Cover. The covers can also be purchased separately for $119.99, and are offered in five different colors: blue, red, white, black, and pink.

The Surface is set to launch on October 26th with the release of Windows 8, with a Surface Pro slated for released “about three months” after the initial Surface launch, according to Microsoft executives, which will put it in early 2013. As things keep amping up, more videos like this one are sure to surface. No pun intended.

Exercise Could Boost The Immune System, Study Suggests

Exercise is good for the body and brain — and new research suggests it could boost your immune system and possibly even help it guard against cancer.

A small new study conducted by researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and the Rocky Mountain Cancer Rehabilitation Institute showed that a large number of the immune T cells in cancer survivors improved in their ability to fight against disease after the cancer survivors participated in an exercise class for 12 weeks.

“What we’re suggesting is that with exercise, you might be getting rid of T cells that aren’t helpful and making room for T cells that might be helpful,” study researcher Laura Bilek, of the University of Nebraska Medical Center, said in a statement.
