Minnie Mouse doll ‘breathes’ to help kids fall asleep

Do you remember the character Linus in the Peanuts strip? He had this particular comfort blanket that he needed in order to remain sane, and there are some kids, no doubt about it, who do need a favorite soft toy or pillow beside them before they are able to get some shuteye. Well, the Japanese have come up with the Hug & Dream Minnie Mouse doll which stimulates slow, gentle breaths, helping relax (hopefully, anyways) the would-be sleeper which eventually should send him or her to bed.

The Hug & Dream Minnie Mouse doll is not some sort of toy which was dreamt up in a basement somewhere by a toymaker while smoking weed – no sir, Takara Tomy, the famous toy making company from Japan, teamed up with cognitive and respiratory specialist Ikuo Honma to give birth to the Hug & Dream Minnie Mouse doll. Coming in muted colors, it avoids one of the main rules of keeping folks awake – mind-stimulating shades. The Hug & Dream Minnie Mouse doll will retail for slightly north of $50 if you are interested.

0x10c is Minecraft creator’s new game

Markus ‘Notch’ Persson, the brains behind the hugely popular game Minecraft, has moved on from his brick building title, although it does remain to be seen whether he will be a victim of his own success in due time with new games that he releases down the line. Why don’t you be the judge this time around, with the maiden footage of his new game titled ’0x10c’ being released to the masses as shown above?

Granted, the video leans more towards a development test of the game’s art and dynamic lights as Markus shoots lasers down dark hallways, but Markus did mention, “The goal is to have it feel a bit like [US sci-fi show] Firefly. You can try to land on a planet but you mess up and, instead of having the ship just explode like it would in real life, the landing gear gets broken. Then you have to try to fix that by finding resources. Instead of the adventure being flying from here to here, it’s: ‘I set the destination, oh god I hit a small asteroid and the cloaking device broke’. I think they really nailed that kind of emergent aspect in [spaceship simulation game] FTL.”

The game is definitely in its early phase of development, but it has been confirmed that as a player, you will be in possession of a ship that has an on-board computer for you to program, all 16-bits of it. The whole idea of the game will not require you to know programming, although you can share the code that you have come up with, so I believe that programmers worth their salt might find this to be something out of the ordinary.

X1 exoskeletal robot suit for astronauts

When you are in space, the lack of gravity means stuff would be floating around unless they are strapped down or tied somewhere, and it does give you the illusion that you’re far stronger than normal as you handle a floating safe which you normally would be unable to budge while you are on earth. Not only that, the lack of gravity would also mean astronauts’ bone density gets affected the longer they remain in space, requiring them to maintain a strict fitness regime so that they do not end up too frail when their space mission is over. The X1 exoskeletal robot suit might be utilized by NASA to make astronauts stronger while maintaining fitness levels even in space.

Originally designed to be a human assist device that enables folks with paraplegia to walk again, the X1 exoskeletal robot suit boasts of strategically designed motors that enable high torque applications including stair climbing, coming with multiple points of adjustment to accommodate a wide range of users. When used in space, it can amplify astronaut strength, or perhaps function as an exercise device for long duration missions. There will definitely be changes made to the X1 exoskeletal robot suit in due time to increase its functionality and flexibility, and let’s hope that the whole world ends up the better for it.

Native Google Maps for iOS 6 in alpha stages?

Most of you who follow tech news would know by now that Apple’s Maps offering on iOS 6 is far from the finished article, and when compared to the old Google Maps on older versions of iOS, you would feel as though you were ‘cheated’ in a sense, as Apple’s Maps app is relatively gimped in comparison. There have been users who clamored for Google to release a native iOS 6 Google Maps app, but Google executives claimed that even if such an app were to be developed, they will still need Apple to give their nod of approval. That day might not be too far off in the future, as what you see on the right is the customary blurry image of a purported alpha version of an upcoming native Google Maps app for iOS.

We might be looking at support for the iPhone 5′s larger display and resolution, in addition to the very real possibility of a vector-based solution. It has been tipped to be “super fast” while boasting of “two-finger rotation to any angle”. What do you think of the leaked screenshot on the right – is it the upcoming real deal, and does this mean Apple will quietly work on Maps in the background before wowing the world with it in iOS 7?

If you’re thinking about picking up the brand new quad-core powerhouse by the name of LG Optimus G in the near future, you’re in for a treat – LG has just released their update schedule for Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and the G is up for upgrade! Unfortunately for you if you’re picking up the device inside the USA, you won’t necessarily see the upgrade so soon as the Korean version which will be grabbing 4.1 in December. Here in the USA we’re more than likely still going to have to wait several more months while a lovely collection of LG devices overseas see their tasty treats delivered inside 2012.

In addition to the Optimus G, the Optimus LTE II will also be getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean inside December 2012. The Optimus Vu and Optimus Vu II will be grabbing Android 4.1 Jelly Bean inside the first quarter of 2013. These devices have been on the market only a very short while, with the first Vu being here in the USA as the LG Intuition on Verizon’s 4G LTE network.

The Jelly Bean upgrade will more than likely hit each of the devices that have been mentioned here in due time inside the USA. It doesn’t mean they’ll be here soon, and it’s not a definite guarantee just because the international version of the phones we’re seeing here have it, but it’s certainly a good sign. Stay tuned for more LG Optimus G news from us very, very soon here on SlashGear, reviews are also right around the corner. Be sure to let us know if you’ve got any questions or concerns about the device so we can give you as full a review as you could possibly desire!

Report: We’ll See The 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro October 23 As Well As The iPad Mini

productchooser_nonretina (1)

Apple will be unveiling a new, smaller 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro alongside an iPad mini at a rumored press event next week, according to a growing number of reports, including a brand new one from AllThingsD. It was first reported by 9to5Mac, and as both 9t05Mac’s Mark Gurman and AllThingsD’s John Paczkowski have solid track records when it comes to predicting these kinds of things, this looks likely to come true.

The new 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro will feature the same basic body design as its larger, 15-inch cousin which Apple introduced at WWDC in June, and will have a 2560 x 1600 resolution display, according to AllThingsD’s sources. That’s a reasonable prediction, given that the current model has 2880 x 1800. Price is the big question mark, but Apple will likely bring it in under the $2199 price tag of its bigger cousin. Also, expect USB 3.0 ports in the latest Apple notebook.

Separately, there were also reports over the weekend that we’d see a new iMac, although that originally comes from a far less reliable source, and so far neither 9to5Mac nor AllThingsD have addressed those reports.

We’ll be sure to let you know when the official invites come through, and we’ll definitely bring you all the news from the event as it happens, when and if it happens.
