Go Away Pesky Birds!

Most of you have probably experienced the hassle of large birds. They are fun to feed and seem really sweet and all, until they start dive bombing you in the back yard or raiding your shrubs and leaving their unwanted deposits on patios, cars, you name it. Time for a device that will help scare the suckers away, not hurt them and not require electricity.

The Solar Powered Bird B Gone Bird Repeller is here to help you keep seagulls, pigeons, crows and other large pests out of the way. Each lightweight, mountable unit includes a continuous motion arm to deter the bigger birds. At 30 RPMs the arms will each defend a 5 foot diameter area, giving you clearance to sit, stand or walk in peace. Use them on any flat surface at home or where your customers may walk. Basically anywhere you want the pests to not haunt. And no need for power as these repellers come with a solar panel. Cloudy day? Nighttime? No problem as 2 AA rechargeable batteries are included to store energy during the sunny times. Each order includes two repellers and goes for $64.92 on Amazon. So stop the harassment by big birds! Keep them away with Bird B Gone.

AT&T offering iPhone 5 refurbished starting at $99

Two months after making its debut, refurbished models of the iPhone 5 are now becoming available from AT&T. For as low as $99, you can get Apple‘s latest smartphone after signing a two-year contract — this is half off of the normal price. Granted, it’s a refurbished model, but if you know anything about Apple’s refurbished items, is that they usually do a bang-up job to restore their products to like-new condition.

$99 will get you a refurbished 16GB iPhone 5 in either black or white. A 32GB model will cost you $199, while the 64GB version will be priced at $299. There’s just one caveat, though. The deal is only good on AT&T’s website, so you can’t go into at AT&T store in order snatch up the deal. This shouldn’t be too big of a deal for most users, but I know some prefer the in-person approach to getting a new phone.

Plus, we’re not sure if this is a Black Friday deal or not, so it may disappear after today. However, AT&T’s website says nothing of the such, so it may be a permanent thing. In any case, it may be a good idea to pounce on this deal anyway if you’ve been waiting to snatch an iPhone 5 at a reduced price.

No word on whether or not other carriers will offer the same kind of deal for refurbished iPhone 5 units. It seems it’s only AT&T at the moment, but Verizon may join in on the fun at some point as well. Either way, this gives those who were waiting on used models the first chance to grab the latest and greatest at half the cost — not a bad deal at all.

Sharp unveils bright, 90-inch LCD for uncannily life-sized signage

Sharp unveils extrabright, 90inch LCD for uncannily lifesized signage

It would be a shame if Sharp kept that giant 90-inch AQUOS TV confined to living rooms, wouldn’t it? The company is inclined enough to agree that it’s building an industrial version, the PN-R903, for digital signs. Its 1080p resolution and local-dimming LEDs are as familiar as a well-worn pair of shoes, but that 6-foot, 8-inch width lets Sharp claim a record for public spaces: the R903 is supposedly the first LCD sign with its technology that can display average humans at real size when tilted to a portrait view, making it an ideal fit for fashion or most anything where one-for-one scale matters. The 700cd/m2 brightness helps by keeping the picture visible in harsher lighting. If you’re not quite ready for the uncanny valley, you’ll be glad to know that the R903 won’t ship until January 28th, when it goes on sale with open pricing. Those who’d still prefer something less imposing can buy a 60-inch PN-R603 at the same time or wait for the 70-inch PN-R703 to grace storefronts on February 25th.

Press photos of HTC Deluxe leak

A little over a week ago, we heard word about a rumored international version of the HTC DROID DNA that could be coming to users outside of the US and Japan. More photos were leaked to today in the form of what look to be press shots. In the photos, there’s a white, black, and brown version of the global model — which is likely to be called the Deluxe DLX — and the brown version seems to have a glossier backing than the other two models.

Details are still pretty scarce at this point, still. However, it’s expected to come with roughly the same specs as the US’s DROID DNA and Japan’s J Butterfly. We’ll certainly see the 5-inch 1080p Super LCD3 display, and the 1.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon Krait processor with 2GB of RAM. Other than that, it’s all up in the air.

However, it will most likely come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box, and the 8MP rear camera with the 2.1MP front-facing shooter will also make an appearance. Overall, I think we should expect mostly the same specs and features that American and Japanese users are currently taking advantage of, save for a different radio and data band.

The only think we’re not at all certain about is whether the Deluxe DLX will come with some form of data — either 3G or 4G. We’ll most likely see at least 3G capabilities, but considering how a lot of European carriers don’t yet have prominent LTE networks like the US has, we’re not sure if HTC will bite the bullet and pack in a LTE chip in the rumored device. We’ll have to wait and see.

Google Nexus 4 LTE Works After Tweak

A bunch of definitely curious and yet enterprising tweakers over at the XDA Developers forums have shown that it is possible to force a smartphone onto the LTE network straight from the handset’s debugging menu itself, never mind the fact that there is no working signal amplifier and filter in the Google Nexus 4. Of course, this seems to work on LTE band 4 (1700MHz and 2100MHz) which Canadian carriers Telus and Rogers occupy.

Anandtech did report last week that “Band 4 (AWS) could essentially be supported with the power amplifiers and transceiver that already are onboard the Nexus 4, but again it ultimately comes down to a particular OEM choice whether these get supported.” It is a rather tricky situation to get LTE support working across a range of carriers throughout the US and internationally, and that is the main reason why Google decided not to include support for multiple LTE bands on the Google Nexus 4 in the first place. Never say never, right?

Scientists study dwarf planet Makemake for the first time

Our solar system has five dwarf planets, including the dwarf planet previously known as a Pluto. One of the other dwarf planets in our solar system that many have probably never heard of is called Makemake. Scientists studied makemake for the first time in April 2011 as it passed between the Earth and a distant star.

Scientists studied the planet using seven different telescopes on Earth to see how the stars light changed as Makemake traveled in front of it. Using the telescopes here on Earth, the scientists were able to determine that the dwarf planet lacked an atmosphere and scientists were even able to determine the dwarf planet’s density.

Scientists from the Andalucian Institute of Astrophysics in Spain studied Makemake using seven different telescopes located across Brazil and Chile. The astronomers watched the dwarf planet as it partially blocked the light from a distant star called Nomad 1181-0235723. Makemake blocked the stars light for only about 1 minute, but that was long enough to reveal a few details about the planet.

Scientists determined that the dwarf planet is about two-thirds the size of Pluto, but isn’t quite spherical. The dwarf planet is 1430 km across in one direction and about 1500 km across and the other. The scientists also determined that the dwarf planet has a density of 1.7 g per cubic centimeter. The density makes it similar to Pluto, but less than a third the density of Earth.

“As Makemake passed in front of the star and blocked it out, the star disappeared and reappeared very abruptly, rather than fading and brightening gradually,” said Dr Ortiz.

“This means that the little dwarf planet has no significant atmosphere. It was thought that Makemake had a good chance of having developed an atmosphere – that it has no sign of one at all shows just how much we have yet to learn about these mysterious bodies.

“Finding out about Makemake’s properties for the first time is a big step forward in our study of the select club of icy dwarf planets.”

Nokia Lumia 920 And Lumia 820 Received 2.5 Million Orders Already?

Nokia Lumia 920 Review

Developers are working on games… but the current selection is very limited

Yahoo! China has the barometer on just how the recently released Nokia Lumia 920 is faring worldwide, as well as the lesser endowed sibling, the Lumia 820 – where they reported that more than 2.5 million units of the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 have been either sold, pre-ordered or booked. This particular report arrived after Nokia launched the new Windows Phone 8-powered Lumia range officially in Hong Kong. In fact, it took just minutes before the Lumia device was sold out on Amazon China – could it be due to the lack of anticipated supply, or is it just overwhelming demand? Are you also going to jump aboard the Lumia bandwagon in the US as it has already arrived? If you are in two minds about whether to pick up the Lumia 920 or not, perhaps after reading our rather in-depth review, you might be able to come to a decision between the head, the heart, and of course, the wallet.

AViiQ Portable Charging Station: Never Lose Your Cables Again

It really sucks when your gear runs out of juice and you’ve got no easy way of recharging. It’s even worse when you’re stuck somewhere that doesn’t have any power outlets or you just don’t have the time to charge up your gadgets. Admittedly, the AViiQ Portable Charging Station won’t solve all of these problems, but you’ll never be without your cables again.

The AViiQ Portable Charging Station stores all of your charging devices in a compact and convenient sleeve. This time, the AViiQ station even has a battery-power, so you’ll be able to juice up your iDevices no matter where you are. There’s a 4-port USB hub allowing you to charge up to 4 devices simultaneously. It also comes with a 5200 mAh battery, which should allow you to charge both your iPad and iPhone almost completely. However, it does weigh 1.55 lbs, and measures 11 inches in length, so you won’t be able to lug it around in your pocket.

It’s available for $169.99(USD) on Amazon. Last year’s model – which doesn’t include the battery pack – is on sale for just $39.99.
