Versi Stand for iPad mini launches

A company called Cool Invent has announced the latest version of an iPad and iPhone stand it offers called the Versi Stand. The new version of the stand is designed with the new Apple Lightning connector integrated allowing it to charge the iPhone 5 or iPad mini. The stand is also compatible with other Apple devices that use the standard 30-pin connector.

The stand is available in versions to hold single iPads or a larger version that will hold dual iPads. The device is able to hold the iPad or iPhone and charge the device the same time allowing users to surf the Internet, play their favorite games, or watch video without using the internal battery. The device is designed to allow full swiveling and rotation as well as tilting for optimum viewing angle.

Since the charging cable is built into the stand there are no wires to mess with, users simply dock their tablet into the holder to charge. All versions of the Versi are designed to look like something Apple would make with a minimalist, industrial look. The stands are made from CNC machined aircraft grade aluminum.

The aluminum also has a soft polyurethane backing to prevent scratches when the device is inserted into the stand. The design allows for 180° rotation and 90° tilt. The swivel action offers 300° movement and the stand is available now for $189.

Survey Suggests 35.8% Of American Households Have Ditched Their Landlines

old phone 640x425 Survey Suggests 35.8% Of American Households Have Ditched Their LandlinesMobile phones are extremely commonplace these days, regardless if they’re a simple feature phone or a high-end smartphone device. Considering that we bring them with us wherever we go, it would seem almost as if contacting someone on their mobile device would be the fastest way to get in touch versus calling them on their landline at home, which begs the question, do we really need the landline anymore? Well according to the Center for Disease Control, based on the preliminary results from its National Health Interview Survey for 2012, it would seem as though 35.8% of American households no longer have a landline installed in their home, and rely exclusively on wireless (read mobile phones) to receive their calls. Interestingly it seems that just under 16% of American households also report that they receive almost all their calls on their mobile devices despite having a landline installed at home. Pretty interesting stats – I can’t remember the last time I called a friend or family member on their landline; what do you guys think?

Samsung confirms multi-window feature and Jelly Bean update for original Galaxy Note

Samsung confirms multiwindow feature and Jelly Bean update for original Galaxy Note

That previously-spotted Premium Suite upgrade for the Galaxy Note is on its way, with Samsung revealing all the details on its site. With a refreshed UI appears very similar to its successor, the respectable Android slab will also lay claim to Air View, Multi-window apps and the addictive easy clip function that allows you to crop and share images and text with the stylus. Thanks to that Jelly Bean update, owners of Samsung’s original phablet can also start dabbling with Google Now, which will continue to pluck information from your search history, location and timezone. There’s no word yet on when the refreshed Premium suite will find its way onto devices anywhere, but with Samsung already singing the update’s praises, it shouldn’t be far away.

Regulators Propose Mandatory Black Boxes In All Automobiles

Black box.aeroplane 640x387 Regulators Propose Mandatory Black Boxes In All AutomobilesWhile some car manufacturers are voluntarily installing black boxes in their cars these days, it seems that federal regulators are proposing that after September 2014, all automobiles sold in the US will have to come with a black box installed. The National Transportation Safety Agency is looking to hear from residents of the US by the 11th of February on this proposed plan. Obviously the installation of these black boxes are for the safety of drivers on the road so in the event of an accident or emergency, the relevant authorities will know what went wrong and whether it might be related to the manufacturing of the vehicle, the driver and etc.

The proposed black boxes will trigger for about 30 seconds when events such as sudden braking or acceleration occur, swerving or any other act that could lead to an accident. The data can then be downloaded either remotely or physically whereby it would be used “primarily for the purpose of post-crash assessment of vehicle safety system performance.” While this sounds perfectly reasonable, there are privacy advocates who are worried about the data being collected and are asking the data to be anonymized to prevent the selling of it to third parties, such as insurance companies who might use it for risk evaluation. What do you guys think? Black boxes being made mandatory – yay or nay?

Manuel Benitez went by the stage name Mark Everett when he was a successful child actor. He starred in several TV shows, commercials and movies, including “Stand and Deliver.” “Final Cut” told the story of his dark journey after stardom.

In the 1990s, Benitez had a 3-year-old son with his girlfriend. When she told him she wanted to break up with him, he allegedly beat her to death in front of their child, and then went on the run with the boy.

He successfully stayed on the run for four years, and even made the FBI’s wanted list. Inevitably, the authorities caught up with him.

The GravityLight is an affordable lamp powered by gravity

gravity light The GravityLight is an affordable lamp powered by gravityWith most of us living in countries where running electricity and water is commonplace, it would be hard for us to imagine what it might be like living in countries where the supply of electricity might not be as stable, which means getting access to a decent light source at night could be tricky. Martin Riddiford and Jim Reeves from London have recently come up with an invention dubbed the GravityLight, a device that uses gravity to power a lamp and that will only cost $5 to purchase. The project was launched on Indiegogo but has since surpassed its goal by more than 500% with 21 days left. (more…)

Kupa X15 Windows 8 tablets now available for purchase

kupax15 Kupa X15 Windows 8 tablets now available for purchaseWe expect that down the road there will be a lot more Windows 8 tablets made available as more manufacturers get on board, but if you’d rather not wait, Kupa might have a Windows 8 tablet for you that could be worth your consideration. Dubbed the X15, Kupa will have four different versions of the tablet for you depending on your price range. It starts at $1,100 for the X15 Elite, and goes up to $1,600 for the X15 Ultra. As far as specs go, all four models will share some basic specs such as 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a 10.1” IPS 1920×1080 Full HD touchscreen display, a 1.3MP front-facing camera, a 5MP rear-facing camera and Bluetooth 4.0.

What differentiates the models would be its storage space which ranges from a 64GB SSD up to 128GB SSD, and the choice of going with an Intel i5 processor or an Intel i7 processor. It should be worth noting that the more expensive models, the X15 Lux and X15 Ultra will come with HSPA+ connectivity. When Kupa first unveiled the UltraNote back at MobileCon 2012, the device came with more features such as LTE connectivity and NFC, but we guess Kupa decided to drop those features in favor of HSPA+, presumably as a cost-cutting measure. For more information or to get in touch with Kupa to purchase an X15 for yourself, head on over to their website for the details.

Taiwan’s Unimicron could produce future Apple chipsets [Rumor]

Taiwans Unimicron could produce future Apple chipsets [Rumor]With the deteriorating relationship between Apple and Samsung, it is becoming increasingly common to hear about Apple looking to source the manufacturing of their AX chipsets from manufacturers that aren’t Samsung. So far we’ve heard rumors that Intel could be picking up the slack, and we’ve also heard that TSMC is a strong candidate, and here to add to the list is another Taiwanese chip maker, Unimicron. Word has it that the Taipei-based manufacturer has passed a smaller-scale test in the current quarter in which they were put to the test to see if they were capable of delivering the basic ARM foundation for Apple’s AX chipset. There are supposedly plans to build a new plant in which production will be ramped up upon completion.

It was only recently that there was speculation that future Apple chipsets could be built in the US, as word has it that a company is looking to build a 3.2 million square foot facility where about 1,000 people would be hired. Rumor has it that Apple was the company, but recently it has been suggested that it could be TSMC who in turn would be helping Apple make their chips.
