LG Display is bringing Ultra HD TVs in multiple sizes, high res mobile screens and more to CES

LG Display is bringing Ultra HD TVs in 55, 65 and 84inch sizes to CES, high res mobile screens too

The manufacturing white label behind products from LG Electronics and many, many other companies, LG Display will have something new for us in Las Vegas as well. In a press release, the company announced it will show off Ultra HD (4K) panels in 55-, 65- and 84-inch sizes (shown above), complete with its FPR passive 3D tech built in. Since LG Display makes panels for quite a few of the HDTVs on shelves, it follows that we’ll be seeing actual products shipping in those sizes in the coming year from several brands. It also will show off its work in other areas, with a 30-inch 4K monitor, a 5.5-inch 1080p screen for smartphones, a 1,920 x 1,200 7-inch tablet display, and a new QSXGA (2,560 x 1,700) screen destined for laptops that packs all of those pixels into just 12.9-inches.

PPI isn’t everything however, and LG Display is bringing several displays notable for their tiny bezels as well, including a 23.8-inch monitor in its Neo-Blade Series, a 13.3-inch laptop screen with a 2mm bezel, and a 4.7-inch mobile screen with a 1mm thick bezel. Finally, the new year also brings tweaks to its OLED displays, which will show off an ultra light and thin design at just 3.5kg and 4mm thick — and hopefully actually being released in the US this year. Check out the release after the break for the full list of goodies, we’ll be getting our own look at them in just a few days.

‘General Hospital’ Star Steve Burton Joining ‘The Young And The Restless’ (REPORT)

Steve Burton might not be done with daytime after all. According to TV Guide Magazine, the “General Hospital” veteran — who recently concluded his storyline as hitman Jason Morgan — has just booked a major role on “The Young and the Restless.”

Sources tell TVGM that Burton will join the cast of the CBS soap soon, with details of his role yet to be revealed. If true, the gig will see Burton reunited with “GH” executive producer Jill Farren Phelps, who left the ABC soap in January 2012 and joined “Y&R” in July.

Burton quit “GH” in August after more than two decades on the soap, telling TV Guide, “I’ve been through 21 years of ups and downs with ‘GH’ — regime changes, cast and crew changes, budget cuts, shakeups of one kind or another, and it’s been nothing but a huge positive in my life and for my family. I have no complaints, no negative feelings at all. But it’s time to go.”

Bill Moyers: The Most Underreported News Story of 2012 is…

It’s easy enough to compile a “best” and “worst” list, but what about bringing attention to important issues that went largely unreported in 2012?

Marvell Semiconductor slammed with $1.17 billion in damages for patent infringement

A jury has found Marvell Semiconductor to have infringed on two of Carnegie Mellon University’s patents after a four week back-and-forth legal battle. The end result is $1,169,140,271 in damages that Marvell has been ordered to pay. If it sticks, this will prove to be the biggest patent-related verdict ever, a title currently held by Samsung, which was ordered to pay over a billion in damages earlier this year.

Marvell_logotype_c_300dpi

Marvell was ruled to have infringed on Patent No. 6,438,180 and Patent No. 6,201,839, both of which concern a method for reducing the sound produced by a hard drive when it is crunching away at data. Marvell stated during trial that Carnegie Mellon’s patents aren’t anything special, and that a patent pre-dating the two in question detailed the same information.

The jury wasn’t convinced, however, and Marvell is now officially in the group of companies that have lost in patent cases with universities. This is especially bad news for Marvell considering that it made a tad over $900 million last year. The company, which is said to have sold over 2 billion infringing chips since 2003, has appealed the ruling.

Carnegie Mellon University was represented by K&L Gate; the firm’s chairman Peter J. Kalis offered this statement. “We take special pride in this trial victory because of the decades-long relationship between our firm and Carnegie Mellon University and our deep appreciation for CMU‘s path-breaking and leadership role in the information age.” The university followed this up by stating, “We did not undertake this suit lightly and once we undertook it we did not pursue it lightly.”

Canon Cinema EOS-1D C hits stores in Japan today, expected stateside later this week

Canon Cinema EOS1D C hits stores in Japan today, expected stateside later this week

At $11,999, this latest Canon 1D is hardly set to become a DSLR bestseller, but there are certainly a few pro shooters willing to line up for an incredibly versatile 18-megapixel 4K cam, with EOS lens compatibility and a full-frame sensor. We were expecting Canon’s top-of-the-line beast to sell for just shy of $15,000, so this new sub-$12k sticker is a pleasant surprise. You’ll also need to invest in a battery of high-speed (at least 100MB/s) CF cards — the 1D C captures 4096 x 2160 video at 24 frames per second with an approximate file size of 3.76 gigs per minute of footage, according to the camera’s instruction manual, which you’ll find, along with a purchase link, at the source link below. The EOS-1D C is expected to hit stores in the US later this week, but a few lucky shooters have been out and about capturing demo reels for the last few weeks — you’ll find some of that footage after the break, along with a few more clips at the coverage links below.

Google lists best Android apps of 2012

With Apple recently releasing a list of what it considers to be the best iOS apps of 2012, we’ve been waiting with bated breath for Google to reveal its own list. The wait is over, as today Google named the best apps to land on the Google Play Store in 2012. The apps range to ones that probably everyone has installed on their Android device to ones that will be relatively unknown to the mainstream crowd, so you could potentially use Google’s list to discover your new favorite app.

topandroid2012

Google doesn’t assign any particular ranking to these apps, so none of them are supposed to be considered “better” than the others. Some of them bring online storefronts to your device, while others are services that many users take advantage of on a daily basis. The majority of them are free to install, save for just one app on the list. In no particular order, here are Google’s best Android apps of 2012:

Evernote
• Zappos
Pinterest
• Grimm’s Snow White
• Expedia
• Pocket
• Ancestry
• Fancy
• Mint.com Personal Finance
• SeriesGuide Show Manager
• Pixlr Express
• TED

It isn’t very surprising to see Evernote and Pinterest show up on the list, and Zappos is a clear choice considering it seems to be pre-installed on nearly every Android device that comes through our doors. It’s good to see apps like Pocket, Fancy, and Pixlr Express get some much-deserved attention, and it seems that Google has delivered a list that’s quite diverse.

As diverse as it is, it notably doesn’t feature any games unless you want to count Grimm’s Snow White – an interactive storybook – as one. Perhaps Google will also release a list of its favorite Android games for 2012? Only time will tell, but for now, let us know if you use any of the apps listed in Google’s favorites for the year!

Andrew Dice Clay On ‘Indestructible,’ His Comeback And Why He Hates Internet Porn

This New Years Eve, audiences will have the opportunity to see the first new Andrew Dice Clay stand-up special in 17 years. During his heyday in the 1980s, the Brooklyn-bred comedian was one of the most popular and divisive figures in pop culture, but Clay had been largely out of the public eye since the ’90s after his stand-up career faded and his film career fizzled. But in 2010, he played a thinly-concealed version of himself in an arc on the final season of “Entourage” to much acclaim. Surprising many, his next big job came in the form of a dramatic role in the currently untitled next Woody Allen film.

We spoke to Clay about how he prepared for his new special, how he balances his family life and career and why he really, really hates Internet porn. “Indestructible” airs on Showtime on Monday, Dec. 31 at 10 p.m. EST.

HuffPost Comedy: I enjoyed your special.
