ZTE Blade C To Hit Europe Soon

zte blade c ZTE Blade C To Hit Europe SoonOriginally, it seemed as though the ZTE Blade C is a mid-range Android-powered smartphone that was headed towards China, but now it seems as though this will not be the case, as the ZTE Blade C is set to hit Europe, too. Definitely far from being a newsmaker where high end specifications are concerned, perhaps it is the relatively cheap price that would make the ZTE Blade C a star in Europe. After all, it is currently selling for a mere 699 CNY in China, which translates to approximately €85.

At that price point in Europe as an unlocked device, it would certainly place it in a very attractive position. After all, for that amount of dosh, you will end up with a 4-inch WVGA display, a dual-core 1GHz MediaTek MTK 6577 processor, 3G connectivity and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean as the operating system of choice. It will also be accompanied by 512MB RAM, sport 4GB of internal memory, Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity, and a 3 megapixel camera at the back. Surely having the latest version of the Android operating system would make this a top draw, no?

Nexus 4 smartphones back on Google Play in Germany (Update: now available in the US and Canada!)

Nexus 4 smartphones back on Google Play in Germany, get 'em while they're hot

If the Nexus 4‘s recent scarcity has been making you want it even more, there’s good news: it’s now back on Google Play shelves. After a lengthy shortage resulted in a minor finger-pointing episode between Mountain View and manufacturer LG, the pair have starting restocking the popular quad-core, Android 4.2-pure device, on Play, well ahead of LG’s February estimate. So far, it’s only popped up in Germany, and there’s no word yet on when they’ll arrive elsewhere. Given the pent-up demand, however, you may want to grab one when it does.

Update: The Nexus 4 is now available through Google Play in the US as well! Hopefully other countries won’t be far behind.

Update 2: Google isn’t leaving out our northern friends, as Canadians can once again buy both Nexus 4 capacities.

500px Is Back in the App Store After All the Porn Bullshit

Holy crap, boobs! Apple last week excommunicated 500px, a photo-sharing app, from the App Store because apparently it made it too easy for people to find nudie pics. Looks like it’s been cleansed and baptized, though, because Apple has welcomed 500px back into the fold. More »

Apple Removes Vine

twitter vine Apple Removes Vine It seems that the folks over at Apple has gotten the message – they have removed the Vine app from the Featured Apps section, which came along after the porn debacle. Just in case you were wondering what Vine is all about, this app allows users to be able to upload a short six second video clip online on just about anything and everything, and this has resulted in some users abusing the service by uploading uber short porn clips. This is clearly not something that Apple would put up with, and hence, they have removed Vine already from the App Store.

The folks over at Apple were not the only ones upset by the availability of adult content over at Vine, and there has been plenty of early adopters who claimed that they will no longer use the app – ever. Twitter, the owner of Vine, will definitely look into this issue and hopefully, learn from it and perhaps implement a more aggressive approach to filtering such content out in due time.

YouTube rumored to launch paid content this spring

It looks like YouTube is wanting to attract more content producers to its platform, as well as make a couple extra bucks on the side, because according to AdAge, the video-streaming site is planning to offer paid subscriptions for individual channels to its users starting sometime in the spring.

youtube

YouTube is said to have contacted a “small group” of content producers on YouTube, asking them to create paid channels that will cost anywhere between $1 and $5 a month, which isn’t too expensive at all, when you consider that this is just for one YouTube channel, the cost can add up, resulting in spending up to $20 per month for just four channels.

In addition to charging for content via channels, YouTube is also considering charging for content libraries and access to live events — their own version of pay-per-view in a way. Other than that, though, nobody’s sure what channels YouTube is making deals with, but AdAge says that they’ve been contacting highly-popular channels about the new system.

YouTube knows that its users probably won’t enjoy the fact that they’ll have to start paying for the content that they’ve been watching for free, but it’s said that YouTube is recommending the channels to take in consideration of how their audience reacts to the new system. Then again, since more and more people are cutting cable, paying for a few subscriptions on YouTube will still end up being cheaper in the long run.

iPhone 5 “greyed wifi” situation gets wild and wacky fixes

This week it’s become apparent that there’s a bit of a bug that’s affecting a select few iPhone 5 users that forums have been calling the “greyed wifi” issue. The issue rises up especially today as iOS 6.1 was released just yesterday without a specific mention of the issue, and though it is possible that Apple has worked on the reported bug, users continue to see it appear. Keeping in mind that there still may be user error in play here, folks, we’ve come across some rather wild fixes to this problem that you’ll have to make happen at your own risk – get ready for oddities!

fireice

As The Register notes, two of the stranger fixes have involved heat and/or cooling of the device – and this isn’t the first nor will it be the last time in this post that we warn you: these fixes are done of your own accord, and SlashGear does not assume any responsibility for you destroying or otherwise changing the way your iPhone functions (or stops functioning). That said, you may very well have wi-fi again very soon – have at it!

grey_wifi_iphone

The first of these fixes includes blasting your iPhone 5 with a hairdryer. You’ll be heating up the area directly below the lens of the camera on the back of the device while you avoid the area on the phone that includes the battery, that being basically the whole right side of the phone. The right side of the phone is in this case the side of the Apple logo with the bite taken out of it. If you heat up your battery, it will expand and break.

This heating fix requires that you heat up the area below the lens on the camera on the back of the device for a while (no time specified) and allow it to cool back down completely before you begin using the device once more. The image you see above is a replica of one posted in the Apple support forums by a user by the name of Ibrahim, showing the yellow area as the area you want to heat (with more caution than you can possibly muster) and the red marking the area you want to avoid completely.

dontdothis

The other major fix for the device is simply wrapping your iPhone in a towel and putting it in the freezer. While there’s a much smaller chance in that case that your device will be busted than it would with the heat, there’s still some caution to be had – don’t expect an immediate fix, and do so at your own risk. This isn’t magic, and physical “fixes” for gadgets are often less helpful than they are full of breaking action.

Sound like a good couple of fixes to you? Both are dangerous enough that you’ll probably want to avoid using them and wait for a real fix from Apple. The major point here is that wifi, while some people end up skipping using it at this point altogether, is still a beast of a component for your modern smart devices, and it’s not going away any time soon – wireless forever!

Lehmann LA100 Drone Flies Solo with Your GoPro

Remember the Drones for Peace? The project that wants to sell drones with cameras for just $250 (USD)? If you think that that’s too much to ask, check out what we have now. This is Lehmann Aviation’s LA100, a drone that’s meant to whisk away a GoPro camera or two. Along with your money.

lehmann aviation la100 gopro uav drone

Whereas the mythical peaceful drones are barely controllable – you point them to a spot via a mobile app and they’ll fly to it on their own – the LA100 is completely autonomous, flying on a broad, pre-set trajectory and then back to it’s master. You don’t get a remote control, an app or even a whistle. What you do get is a 2lb. foam and carbon fiber drone that can soar almost 330ft. up for up to 5 minutes.

The LA100 comes with a mounting kit for GoPro cameras. If you have the GoPro Hero3, you can mount your camera at the bottom or at the top. The older GoPro Heros can only be mounted at the top though. But if you do have an extra Hero3, you can mount two cameras to the LA100 at the same time.

You can order the LA100 from Lehmann Aviation’s website for €990 (~$1,330 USD). Don’t even ask how much Lehmann is charging for the ones that come with remote controls.

Grill – Come Rain, Shine or Snow

Whether you are in the midst of Summer or in the depths of Winter enhancing your grilling never hurts. Some continue grilling all year round. Others play it more conservative and just look forward to warmer months. Brookstone offers a couple of tools that empower you to keep on grilling – regardless of the elements. And they now ship internationally.

Don’t let early darkness get the best of your cooking. Light your way and leave your hands available for the true chef-ing duties. The Handle-Mount Grill Light, $39.99, gives you LEDs to help you see your handiwork. Clamp the device onto your grill handle and adjust the direction of the light where you need it. Don’t fret if you forget to bring it in as it automatically shuts off after 6 minutes and can withstand the elements.

For the die hard grill master I recommend protecting yourself from the elements. Don’t let mother nature ruin your food or ability. Invest in a Grillzebo™! The metal roof protects you and your grill. Side tables and a hanging rack give you space for food, spices and tools. Rechargeable, overhead lights give you perspective on the whole space too. Sure, Grillzebo will cost you ($999.95) but the 8’x5’ space will be your grilling haven to make the magic happen.
