3D Printed Prosthetics Is The Real Deal

3D Printed Prosthetics Is The Real Deal3D printing does far more than just churn out interesting bits and pieces that you require, perhaps even to print substitute LEGO bricks that you can call your own? Thing is, those with a more altruistic vision will see that 3D printing has its place in the medical world. Cornell bioengineers and physicians have worked together to merge the implementation of 3D printing and injectable gel molds, creating an artificial ear which actually looks, feels and even functions, like a natural one.

According to Dr. Jason Spector, director of the Laboratory for Bioregenerative Medicine and Surgery and associate professor of plastic surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College, touted that 3D printing is “absolutely” the best option that reconstructive surgeons currently can undertake to assist kids who need to have a new ear after losing it due to trauma or cancer. Thing is, it will take around half a decade before such methods will end up in a widespread manner in clinical trials.

Nikon announces the D7100 DSLR $1,200, 24MP DX sensor, improved speed and focusing update handson!

Not eager to fork over two grand for Nikon’s full-frame D600? You might take interest with the company’s new D7100, a lightweight DSLR with a brand new DX-format (APS-C) sensor and a handful of other goodies to boot. The 24.1-megapixel cam’s imaging technology follows a now-commonplace industry trend by dropping the optical low-pass filter in favor of enhanced resolution. Naturally, the D7000 successor includes a sensitivity range of ISO 100 to 25,600 (Hi 2), along with improved noise reduction for better results in low-light. There’s a D4-like EXPEED 3 processor with support for 6 frames-per-second shooting in any mode, even when capturing 12- or 14-bit RAW images. A unique 1.3x DX crop function boost that rate to 7 fps, however, while capturing a maximum of 15.4-megapixel stills and 1080/60i or 50i video, compared to 1080 30/25/24p in the regular mode. There’s a 3.2-inch 1.229M-dot LCD, an OLED display inside the viewfinder for crisper data readout, and plenty more if you read on!

Preview Your Files In Google Drive

Preview Your Files In Google DriveDo you use Google Drive a whole lot ever since it was released? Working on the cloud sure as heck has its fair share of advantages, but sometimes, when you do not have access to the Internet, that would be the moment where a local file comes in handy. Well, Google intends to make Google Drive a whole lot more user friendly this time around by offering you the option of previewing your file before opening it. You are able to check out over 30 file types, where you can then quickly flip between those files until you come across the one that you were looking for.

The new preview can be seen automatically if you open a photo, video, or PDF. In order to check out a preview of a Google document, all you need to do is right-click on the file name, select “preview”, and you’re good to go. The moment the preview window is open, click on the arrows on either side to flip to other files. The preview itself allows you to check out video files or scroll through multi-page documents, how about that? This is definitely a step in the right direction in increasing productivity levels at the office for sure. Expect to see this feature roll out in the coming days.

HBO Go for Android adds HDMI video output, at last

HBO Go on an Android tablet

HBO brought some of the content walls down when it opened up AirPlay support in the HBO Go app for iOS users, proving that it wasn’t going to protect TV viewing at all cost. It just removed some more barriers: the premium channel has quietly rolled out an update to its Android app that enables HDMI video output. Provided a phone or tablet supports the connection (sorry, Nexus 7 owners), it too can pipe video to the big screen. The solution still doesn’t let us watch HBO without a pricey TV subscription, but it will give us fewer qualms about catching up on Girls when we’re at a friend’s place.

LG unveils Optimus F5 and F7 4G LTE smartphones ahead of MWC

Ahead of the upcoming Mobile World Congress, LG has unveiled two new handsets in the F-series, the Optimus F5 and the Optimus F7. These 4G LTE smartphones both feature mid-to-high range specs, and feature both the convenience of QSlide and the functionality of Live Zooming, which was previously only available for Optimus G. Both smartphones will be available worldwide, launching first in Europe.

First up is the Optimus F5, which features a 1.2GHz dual-core processor and a 4.3-inch IPS display with 256ppi. Inside, users will find 8GB of internal storage space and 1GB of RAM, as well as a microSD slot for expansion up to 32GB. The handset features a 5-megapixel rear camera and a 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera, as well as a 2,150mAh battery. It runs Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.

Next is the Optimus F7, which features slightly more advanced specs. The handset is nearly a phablet with a 4.7-inch True HD IPS display (312ppi), as well as a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and 2GB of RAM. There’s 8GB of internal storage space, as well as a microSD slot that supports expansion up to 32GB. The rear camera is slightly higher resolution at 8-megapixels, with the front camera clocking in at 1.3-megapixels. The battery is a decent 2,540mAh, and like the F5, it runs Android Jelly Bean 4.1.2.

Says LG’s President and CEO Jong-seok Park, “LG continues to lead the industry with 4G LTE innovation and the Optimus F Series, a well-balanced an well-equipped 4G LTE smartphone for the mass market, embodies the best of our broad LTE patent portfolio and innovative UX features. With adoption of LTE expected to explode in 2013, we are sending a clear message to consumers with the Optimus F Series that LTE isn’t just for heavy content users and techies anymore. It’s for everyone.”

3GHz NovaThor L8580 CPU Set For MWC 2013 Debut

3GHz NovaThor L8580 CPU Set For MWC 2013 DebutST-Ericsson rolled out their most recent 2.5GHz NovaThor L8580 CPU earlier this year, but this does not mean that ST-Ericsson is going to remain comfortable, resting on their laurels. Well, it is nice to know that the company is now working on introducing a faster version of the processor at the upcoming Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, that is kicking off next week – namely, the quad-core NovaThor L8580 that clocks in at a whopping 3GHz. Yes sir, 3GHz is blazing fast where a mobile processor is concerned, and to make sure that the battery is not depleted in a short time, ST-Ericsson has constructed this particular chipset using the 28nm FD-SOI manufacturing technology.

Not only that, they have also used ModAp which will optimize the execution of apps, allowing it to run at speeds of up to 35% faster in certain cases. The 3GHz NovaThor L8580 CPU is said to be able to play nice with dual cameras of up to 20-megapixel, HD voice support, and LTE connectivity. In terms of graphics, the GPU will feature a 600MHz PowerVR SGX544 variety. This remains a prototype as at press time, but we do hope to spend some time with it on the showfloor later next week.

Android 4.2 Changelog Updated

Android 4.2 Changelog UpdatedGoogle has just introduced some updates to the Android 4.2 changelog, where it has taken note of the entire slew of new features that are found in the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system. For those of you who have had experienced failing eyesight due to the scourge of aging and time, the magnifier in Android 4.2, when enabled, allows the user to triple tap on the screen to experience full screen magnification. Apart from that, the power menu allows you to enable “TalkBack,” an Android screenreader, where it will also be accompanied by a new camera app and High Dynamic Range Mode (HDR) that widens the exposure range so that you can shoot photos in greater detail than ever before.

How about the inclusion of full HDMI mirroring that offers support for notifications and multi-display? Yup, that is part of the deal as well. The next key update for the Android operating system should debut this coming May at Google I/O, and it will most probably be called Key Lime Pie for its nickname, running on the upcoming Motorola X handset.

ZTE To Ship Tegra 4 Smartphones This Year?

ZTE To Ship Tegra 4 Smartphones This Year?Word on the street have it that NVIDIA’s Tegra 4, which was unveiled in January this year, will arrive in the chassis of some smartphones from manufacturer ZTE sometime in the middle of this year. Yes sir, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer ZTE intends to keep things under wraps at the moment without revealing the kind of naming conventions that they have for the new Tegra 4-powered smartphones, and the first models among the lot will arrive in China later in the middle of this year.

In fact, there are also whispers going around that an LTE “super phone” is also in the works, according to the folks over at ZTE. The flagship smartphone, so to speak, and we do wonder whether ZTE will put in the effort to introduce to folks living in North America (and basically, anywhere else outside of China), to grab hold of the new Tegra 4-powered ZTE smartphones, too. One thing’s for sure, if ZTE is not going to do so, other smartphone companies would not mind stepping onto the plate and delivering some Tegra 4 goodness into the palm of your hands.
