DE-STAR Intends To Blow Up Meteors

DE STAR Intends To Blow Up MeteorsRemember our earlier story about how a meteorite actually crash landed in Russia, where this 10-ton behemoth injured around a thousand folks who least expected a meteor to drop down from the heavens? Well, they say that prevention is better than cure, so it makes absolute perfect sense to come up with a kind of defense system that hopefully, will be able to zap incoming meteors before they wreak their brand of havoc on earth. A couple of California scientists hope to have a solution with their solar power based proposal, where the concept will be called Directed Energy Solar Targeting of Asteroids and Exploration, or DE-STAR for short.

DE-STAR functions as an orbiting system which will channel solar power into a phased array of laser beams, and these laser beams will blast at the offending space rocks or meteor, pushing them in a different direction and away from danger of collision with vulnerable earthlings below. Something tells me that we might soon see a classic Counter Strike map known as DE_STAR to accompany the famous DE_DUST…

Maggie Smith Talks To ’60 Minutes’ About Playing The Dowager Countess On ‘Downton Abbey’ (VIDEO)

On the night of the Season 3 finale of “Downton Abbey” in the U.S., Dame Maggie Smith sat down for a rare interview with “60 Minutes.” While Smith admitted that she’s never seen a single episode of “Downton Abbey,” that doesn’t mean she’s not hugely supportive of the show, as well as enjoying her role in it.

While American audiences are still a year out from the start of Season 4, Smith was already contemplating the future of the Dowager Countess.

“Logically, Violet must be about 100 and something now, so I don’t know how she’s gonna last,” she said.

Vertu Looked At Windows Phone 8 Before The Vertu Ti

Vertu Looked At Windows Phone 8 Before The Vertu TiWhat do you think of the recently released Vertu Ti (as seen above)? Surely, that is a smartphone that divides opinions down the middle, especially when you consider the kind of price tag that it comes with. Well, here is a little bit of insider information on what could have been – with Vertu sharing that they originally wanted to churn out a luxury version of a smartphone that ran on Windows Phone 8, but it seemed as though their will to build one of these were not enough to overcome the complexity of working on a Windows Phone 8 device. Hence, that was when Android came into the picture.

Well, it does boggle the mind really, how can a phone manufacturing company with a fair number of years in terms of experience tucked away actually say that they are unable to overcome the complexities of a Windows Phone 8 device? Perhaps Vertu’s troubles laid with software integration, as the Windows Phone platform does not really enable one to customize its interfaces.

Robert M. Randolph: Redefining Courage

When a friend spoke recently about doing one’s duty and quoted Kipling, I was a bit jolted by the tone. I know the poem and believe in being dutiful, but I would not have spoken of myself as being called by a sense of duty.

NBA All-Star Game Highlights: LeBron, Kobe, CP3 Put On A Show (VIDEOS)

As usual, the NBA’s All-Stars put on a show.

LeBron threw down a few electrifying dunks early and then he went at it with Kobe late. In between, Kevin Durant took flight a couple times and Chris Paul had a field day — recording 20 points and 15 assists.

At the wrong end of several highlights was Chris Bosh, who didn’t have quite as much success on the court as his fellow All-Stars.

Sony Alpha A58, NEX-3N press images possibly caught making the rounds

Sony Alpha A58, NEX3N press images possibly caught making the rounds

We’ve already seen hints that Sony wants to rejuvenate its entry-level interchangeable lens cameras. Purported press images snagged by Digicam Info, however, support talk what could be an evolutionary yet meaningful refresh. The Alpha A58 you see above appears to only have minor ergonomic tweaks, but introduces a truly standard hot shoe and a new 18-55mm, f/3.5-5.6 II kit lens. The sighting backs earlier Sony Alpha Rumors claims, which also had the A58 carrying a roughly 20-megapixel sensor. A second set of pictures from DI (an example of which is after the break) also validates a previous live leak of the NEX-3N mirrorless cam, whose centerpiece is still its motorized zoom control. Neither Sony camera has a leaked release date, although the increasing flow of details suggests there isn’t much more of a wait.

Derek Penwell: What if Gay Kids had a Church that Loved Them?

I wondered how life would be different if there were churches around that loved these kids for who God created them to be, instead of trying to change them from what church people fear they represent.

Kobe Bryant Blocks LeBron James In 2013 NBA All-Star Game (VIDEO)

Kobe vs. LeBron

In the final minutes of the 2013 NBA All-Star Game, the Black Mamba defended King James, treating fans to a few memorable trips up and down the floor.

With the East down by eight under three minutes left, Bryant took on the task of defending the three-time MVP. LeBron tried to get by him and drove to his left from the right wing. James used a screen to get some separation from Bryant before taking a running jumper from a few feet inside the 3-point line.
