iOS 6.1.1 revealed: cellular performance fix aboard

This afternoon an over-the-air update to the iPhone has been appearing for users across the USA, this upgrade including an issue “that could impact cellular performance and reliability” in the device. At this very moment it appears that the iPhone 4S will be included in the first wave of upgrades and that no other issues are being listed by Apple as the software change comes about. This update comes through less than a month after the initial iOS 6.1 update hit iPhones around the world.

If you’re wondering if your iPhone has an upgrade available, you’ve only to go to your settings and head to “Software Update”. From there you’ll find either an update available to you or a wait in front of you. Don’t fret if nothing is up for you right this minute as the upgrade has just begun to roll out this afternoon – no worries!

This update also comes just days (or hours, in some cases) after a set of warnings and/or messages urging users to skip the iOS 6.1 upgrade were released by carriers like Vodafone. Also in the mix was (and is) evasi0n 1.1, a rather popular jailbreak system that works with iOS 6.0 and 6.1 specifically. Now we get to see if this update breaks that break and that team has to break it all over again.

Meanwhile it appeared that iOS 6.1.1 started to be released back on the 6th of this month, so we’re not long for a wide release without a doubt. Have a peek at the timeline below for additional iOS news from this past week and keep up to date on your devices – update and upgrade daily!

Thanks for the tip, Jake!

NASA launches Landsat 8 into orbit

Today, NASA launched the eighth Landsat satellite into space, continuing the tradition of tracking various environmental changes and resource usage around Earth. The Landsat program has been around since 1972, and has been providing quality data of our planet for over four decades now. The satellite officially launched at 1:02 pm ET from from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.

landsat-8

Landsat 8 rode on a United Launch Alliance Atlas 5 rocket hurdling at 1,700 mph into space. In fact, the rocket burned so much fuel in a short amount of time, that less than five minutes after lift-off, the rocket weighed 25% of its original lift-off weight. One the satellite gets settled in space, it’ll cruise along at around 428 miles in a polar orbit.

The Landsat program is a joint venture between NASA and the US Geological Survey. NASA essentially provides the rockets and the technology to get the satellite up and running, while the US Geological Survey takes all of the images that are collected and turns them into information and data that everyone can interpret.

Over the next three months, NASA will be operating the satellite to make sure it functions as necessary. Then, after all operations appear steady, NASA will hand over the satellite to the US Geological Survey, where’ they’ll take over control of the spacecraft in order to collect information about the planet.

Xbox 720 To Rely Heavily On Kinect 2.0; Able To Run Multiple Games [Rumor]

The next-generation console race started a few months ago with the Nintendo Wii U, and now it’s up to Microsoft or Sony to unveil their next-generation consoles. We heard a report a few weeks back concerning all of the details of the PlayStation 4, but today, we’re hearing some new reports concerning the next Xbox.

The report is coming from Kotaku, who has received “white papers” from the same source who leaked PlayStation 4′s info a few weeks back. The report highlights a number of features of the next Xbox, one of which is the new Kinect, which apparently will be shipped along with the console. The next Xbox will rely heavily on the Kinect as it “must be plugged in and calibrated for the console to even function.” (more…)

Kanex meDrive turns any USB drive into a NAS for iOS devices, we go hands-on

Kanex meDrive handson video

Kanex may be more famous as a cable maker, but it still has priors when it comes to knocking out the odd device. meDrive is a small white box that’s designed to turn any old USB HDD into a network attached storage (NAS) drive. We’re no friend to buzzwords like “private cloud,” but as the unit promises to swell the capacity of our microSD-slot lacking iOS devices, we couldn’t resist giving it a go. Does this $99 box do all that it promises to do? Find out, after the break.

Apple Updates iPhone 4S To iOS 6.1.1 After European Carriers Advise Against Updating To 6.1

iPhone4s_3up_Photo_Siri_Sprgbd

Apple has just issued iOS 6.1.1, a bug-fixing update aimed at the iPhone 4S specifically to address issues around cellular issues on 3G connections for some European carriers, per the release notes. The update had been in beta for only five days, which is a much shorter cycle than Apple usually goes through for new iOS updates. The new release is a different one from that already in testing, according to Apple, which addressed Maps fixes for users in Japan.

Vodafone UK and 3 Austria had warned customers not to update their iPhone 4S to iOS 6.1 via text messages sent out to subscribers, advising that it prompted 3G connection issues including an inability to make or receive calls or texts. iOS 6.1 also caused issues for AOL corporate employees, creating errors around meeting management.

Those errors, as well as ones that users are reporting around battery drain and device overheating, aren’t specifically mentioned in the release notes for this update. Those problems also extend beyond the iPhone 4S, so it’s likely they’ll get zapped in another, less urgent bug-fixing update aimed at all the hardware to be released later.

DiveBot hits indegogo as $1300 remote-control underwater robot

This week the folks behind F5 Robotics have revealed DiveBot, also known as the “world’s first ready-to-use underwater HD ROV under $1300.” That’s quite the feat, making such a device at such a price, and it’s coming in a way that’s no small challenge for the public as well – it’ll be crowd-funded on its way to reality. Through the crowd-funding platform indegogo, users will be able to put down an amount of cash that will gain them early access to a final product, knowledge that they helped fun the project, or just a friendly letter saying “thanks!”

With this ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) you’ll be able to dive on deep into the sea with a collection of parts that are at once easy to construct and inexpensive to purchase. This project includes no less than some of the brand new F5 Robotics XStream Brushless Thrusters, a rather successful set of robot-friendly parts that are selling like wild right this minute. DiveBot uses at least two of these thrusters as a set of its most important components.

wrrrrr

With DiveBot, users will have the option to choose from one of several different kits. First there’s a DIY Development Platform that users can purchase to create whatever final vision they’ve got for their version of DiveBot at home. This set comes with the chassis and the thrusters so you’ll be able to create your own model.

Next there’s the Standard Version which will be wired with a high definition camera and a 50-foot tether complete with controls as well as video-out so you can hook up your own display onboard your ship, whatever that may be. The price of the DIY kit is currently projected to be between $600 and $700 USD while the Standard Version will be closer to $1200, then there’s one final version – the Deluxe Version.

The Deluxe Version is so exclusive that there’s not even a price for it yet – it’s so wild and crazy that you’ll not even be able to handle it! It includes the same hardware you get with the Standard Version but in this case you’ve got a 150-foot tether, a Waterproof Pelican case to carry everything in on the go, and a lovely daylight-viewable 7-inch LCD display (for all your viewing needs.) This and each other version coming soon will be available with optional “upgrades” to 500 feet of tether and AUX lighting – go big!
