Lenovo rolls out extra-compact ThinkCentre Edge 62z all-in-one for $549

Lenovo ThinkCentre Edge 62z stuffs an all-in-one into a tiny space for $549

Some of Lenovo’s pro customers can be very fussy: hospitals and schools want multiple computers in a small area, but without skimping on the usual features they’d expect from desktops. If any PC could resolve those contradictory demands, it might be the company’s new ThinkCentre Edge 62z. The extra-angular design purportedly fits a 18.5-inch all-in-one into a third of the space of a 20-inch display, all while carrying up to a Core i3 processor and a DVD burner. Whether or not you see the 62z as a feat of engineering, the design has some room to grow with up to 8GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. The price may be the real clincher for some customers — Lenovo expects this lower-tier ThinkCentre Edge to cost $549 when it reaches the US in May, which could squeeze it into a few more IT budgets.

DIY Instagram Photo Booth: Say Filter!

Instructables member Alexander Morris made a photo booth that looks like the app icon of the popular image sharing service Instagram. If you’re a fan of the service you might be disappointed to know that Alexander didn’t actually integrate Instagram or any image editing service into the photo booth. But Alex more than makes up for it with the quality of his build.

Just by looking at it you can already tell that Alexander has some serious crafting skills. Inside the beautiful case are two Nikon SB900 flash guns, a Nikon D3200 camera with an 18-55mm lens, a TV that serves as the viewfinder and an Arduino microcontroller to run things. It also has two seven-segment LEDs, but I’m not sure what they display. Perhaps a timer and a total image count?

Think you’ve got the skills to make one? Then head to Alexander’s Instructables page for the instructions. Otherwise stick with the Instagram app, or wait for one of these, because Alexander isn’t selling the photo booth.

What’s the Safest Seat in an Airplane?

The truth is that, statistically, planes are one of the safest ways to travel. But with that being said, even walking out your front door is going to come with its fair share of risks. So for all you hyper-paranoid aerophobes out there, the UK’s Channel 4 is producing a documentary—The Crash—that attempts to officially settle, once and for all, which spot on an airplane least resembles that of a deathtrap. Playdek Closes $3.8M Series A To Build A Digital Community Where Tabletop Gamers Can Feel At Home

playdek

Fresh from putting smiles on the faces of tabletop gaming geeks everywhere, with yesterday’s news that it would be helping to bring Dungeons & Dragons to iOS devices later this year, mobile game publisher Playdek has closed a $3.8 million Series A funding round.

The round was led by Qualcomm Incorporated, via its venture investment arm, Qualcomm Ventures, with IDG Ventures and ff Venture Capital also participating. Existing investors Deep Fork Capital, Greycroft Partners, Jarl Mohn and unnamed angel investors also joined in. The company had previously raised $1.56 million in funding from its seed and Angel rounds — taking its total funding post-Series A to $5.36 million.

Playdek said the new funding will allow it to expand its digital hobby games portfolio with new launches, including its forthcoming app, Agricola, based on the strategy board game of the same name. Flagship existing titles from Playdek include its Ascension series.

The company’s other big plan for the funding is to build a hobby gamer community and online platform for players to meet and hang out, due to launch later this year. It said this platform will “provide the services that hobby gamers value” — so presumably stuff like leaderboards ranking players by score and forums to discuss the merits of different gaming strategies. In a press statement, Joel Goodman, CEO, said it would be about “giving gamers that ‘around the table’ feeling in the digital realm”. The platform will also offer events and tournaments.

Commenting on the funding in a statement, Phil Sanderson, Managing Director, IDG Ventures said: “The market category is poised for growth, and Playdek has proven that it is the expert when it comes to bringing this dedicated audience what they want in mobile gameplay.”

“Playdek gives gamers what they want — compelling online games based on the franchises they know and love.  Playdek allows people to explore these worlds and stories in a compelling new way,” added John Frankel, ff Venture Capital, also in a statement. “We love the team, the strategy, and what they have done to date; we expect great things from them in the future.”

Final PS4 And Next Gen Xbox Hardware Specs Remain Unknown, Even To Industry Insiders

Final PS4 And Next Gen Xbox Hardware Specs Remain Unknown, Even To Industry Insiders Fans of Battlefield 4, listen up! You know that the game will arrive on the PC platform later this fall, and will skip a release on the Nintendo Wii U, but does this mean that the game will also give the PS4 as well as upcoming Xbox successor a miss? No one really knows, as nothing has been confirmed just yet. In fact, Patrick Bach, the executive producer for the Battlefield first person shooter series at Electronic Arts’s DICE Studio, said, “I don’t know if anyone has the next-gen hardware to be honest – really. There are versions of it, but does anyone have the final hardware? Do we really know what the final hardware will be? There are specs and alpha hardware, but nobody knows exactly what it will be.”

What can one take from that rather interesting statement? Could what is known about the likes of the Sony PS4 at this point in time just be red herrings to feed the news hungry masses? After all, I am quite sure that the recent 17 minute trailer of Battlefield 4 has already garnered its fair share of fans. Ah well, like any other good rumor, only time will dispel or affirm it.

Sony Xperia P Jelly Bean Screenshot LeakedSony Mobile seems to be putting in the extra hours so that they are able to roll out the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update that has been a long awaited update for plenty of owners of Sony Xperia smartphones which were released last year. The Sony Xperia P, also known by its model number LT22i, is said to be updated sometime at the end of this month according to the official release schedule, which means there are a few more days left to go. Hence, it is not surprising to see at least one leaked screenshot of the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update for the Sony Xperia P hit the Internet rumor mills, and here we are presenting it to interested readers on the right.

The screenshot depicts the Sony Xperia P running on the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean firmware with build number 6.2.X.X.XXX, which is not out of line from what we expect. As for the kernel, it seems to remain stuck at version 3.0.8, instead of being bumped up to version 3.4 as seen on more recently released smartphones.

Apple Final Cut Pro X marketing campaign looks to win back video editors

When Apple unveiled Final Cut Pro X back in 2011, the response was less than stellar. Many video editors hated the new layout, and they blasted Apple for turning the professional-grade video editing software into basically a version of iMovie on steroids. However, the company is looking to win their hearts back with a new marketing campaign.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Apple is launching a new marketing campaign that is intended to try and win back some of the professional users who have abandoned Final Cut Pro X, and either went back to Final Cut Pro 7 or switched to a different video editing software entirely. The campaign will also be aimed at getting skeptical users on board with the new video editor.

Apple handled the criticism to Final Cut Pro X with great aplomb, giving users who bought the software a refund if they didn’t like it, and providing new users with free trials before they had to decide whether or not to buy. Many users have noted that Apple dumbed down the video editing software in order to cater towards larger audiences.

Apple will be posting confessional-type stories on its website, two of which will feature Tsui Hark, one of the biggest names in Hong Kong cinema, and TV Azteca, who produces thousands of telenovela episodes each year. It’s not said when exactly the campaign will go live, but it should be fairly soon.

Apple Patent Looks At Wrap-Around AMOLED Display

Apple Patent Looks At Wrap Around AMOLED DisplayApple is a company (among many other companies these days) who treat patents like the new corporate “currency”, turning them into bargaining chips down the road – hey, you never know when you might need those old patents filed so many years ago, right? What you see above is actually a diagram that was spotted in an Apple patent application which appeared over at the USPTO as freshly as today, where it describes a “consumer electronic product”’s display.

Yes sir, this particular patent would involves manufacturing a device that relies on an open-ended transparent body, where glass would be a good example, and this will end up as a full wrap-around display whenever you unfurl a flexible AMOLED screen within it. Of course, this does not mean the entire surface of the flexible AMOLED will be used simultaneously, although a “detection mechanism” has been detailed, including a camera alongside facial recognition software which would figure out on its own just how much of the screen you are able to view, hence helping conserve juice since power is sent only to the relevant segments of the display.

Gridcase Reactor Is An iPhone 5 Case Which Features A Hand Crank

We’ve seen some pretty standard iPhone battery cases that will fit around your device and supply power to it, some of them even allowing you to choose when it needs a boost in power the most by turning the feature on or off. The Gridcase Reactor is an iPhone 5 battery case, but it features a unique method of charging the device.

The Gridcase Reactor features a hand crank that you can attach to the back of the case to crank your way to more power for your iPhone 5. The kit will come with a two-piece case with a built-in micro-generator, a 400mAh boost battery, and a 500mA manual generator. The case is currently seeking crowdfunding on Crowd Supply, which if you’re instantly interested in the case will cost you $99 if you promise to fund it by the start of May. If the Gridcase Reactor becomes fully funded, it expects to launch in October for $149. (more…)
