George W. Bush: Painting ‘May Reflect My Precocious Nature’

More than four years removed from his time in the White House, George W. Bush appears to have transitioned well from president to painter.

In a Wednesday interview with ABC News’ Diane Sawyer, Bush revealed what his artistic side adds to the daily life equation, summing it up in four words: “I love to paint.”

“You know what the interesting lesson is though, that you can keep learning in life,” Bush added. “I mean, some guy one time said to me, ‘Man, you deserve to rest.’ And I don’t wanna rest. I wanna live life to the — I wanna follow the example of President 41 and, you know, sprint into the grave.”

Xing puts a Wii U at the heart of its costly karaoke machine

DNP This is what near $16,000 Wii U looks like

Sure, we’ve seen game consoles modified for use beyond their original purpose, but this apparatus turns things up a notch. Pictured above is the Joysound Festa, a mobile entertainment system powered by the Wii U‘s hardware and software. Built by Japanese karaoke machine maker Xing, this beastly console mod is controlled from the system’s Gamepad and includes the gracelessly named Nintendo x Joysound Wii Karaoke U. Pre-loaded with 90,000 songs, this party starter also ships with a set of dance, exercise, yoga and brain training videos. Already reaching for your wallet? You should know that this unique setup is Japan-only, and headed to hotels and nursing homes at a hefty price of 1,580,000 yen (around $15,884). At that price, it may take around 25 years until we see one of these bad boys up for grabs on eBay.

Robert Koehler: Chasing Infinity

In the new security state, not even garbage will have privacy.

“Terrorism,” the Chicago Sun-Times informed us last week, “has created a new market in Chicago and other big cities for a company that started out making bear resistant garbage containers about 14 years ago.”

Clear plastic trash bins are coming! They cost up to $900 apiece. “Monday’s deadly bombings at the Boston Marathon demonstrate a need for the bins at events like the Bank of America Chicago Marathon,” a company salesman said, and I marveled at the security minutiae that is now called news. We are kept informed of everything except what matters.

Film Reels of Classic Movies Are Absolutely Gorgeous

Austrian photographer Reiner Riedler created his photo series ‘The Unseen Seen’ by snapping shots of the film reels of famous movies. They’re drop dead gorgeous and somehow uniquely different from each other. It’s like getting the feel for a movie from just looking at the combination of colors in its reel. I want to hang these photographs up as artwork. More »

Sony unveils Handycam HDR-GW66VE waterproof camcorder

Although many modern smartphones have the ability to record video in 720p or 1080p HD, in many ways they are still inferior to their dedicated camcorder counterparts, one of which is the newly announced Sony Handycam HDR-GW66VE. This device offers a lot in terms of features, but perhaps its biggest draw is its ruggedness, offering a variety of features that, when combined with its size, take into near action-camcorder territory.

a

The Handycam HDR-GW66VE is waterproof to depths of up to 10 meters/33 feet, as well as being resistant to a variety of conditions, such as dust, freezing temperatures -10C/14F), and drops from a height of about 1.5 meters, although its durability partially depends on the substance upon which it is dropped. The outdoorsy features aside, this Handycam also offers a variety of other features tailored towards higher-end video quality.

Because the HDR-GW66VE is small enough to fit in a pocket, it is prone to the same issues of shaky and wobbly video as other cameras that aren’t heavy enough to neutralize small jostles and hand movements. To rectify this, Sony tossed SteadyShot Active Mode into the Handycam’s roster alongside an Exmor R CMOS sensor and G Lens. SteadyShot works when zoom is being used, as well.

Videos are recorded in full HD 50p in AVCHD format, which is ideal for those who are as interested in quality as they are portability, keeping compression artifacts and other issues to a minimum. There’s also an MP4 recording mode for smaller (and lower quality) videos. Those with BRAVIA TVs will be interested to know this Handycam supports Triluminous Color.

Available in June. Price yet unspecified.

Provo council approves fiber network sale to Google, but city must front $1.7 million

Image

Provo, Utah’s plan to sell its cost-plagued fiber network to Google has been approved by the municipal council, meaning it’ll soon become the third Google Fiber city. However, while still not receiving any money upfront as earlier reported, it’ll now have to advance $1.7 million in equipment and engineering costs not part of the deal before, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. In exchange, each Provo resident will get a free 5-megabit internet connection for seven years and Google will have to upgrade the network to connect all the city’s homes. It’s not quite free, however, as the city’s 120,000 residents must still pay a $39 million bond for building the network — meaning they’ll shell out $3.3 million for each of the next 12 years.

Yahoo strikes deal to exclusively offer Saturday Night Live content

Do you enjoy Saturday Night Live? If so, you’re in good company, with Yahoo‘s CEO Marissa Mayer revealing in a blog post earlier today that she is also a fan. That’s not all she revealed, however, expressing her fondness for the show amidst a bigger announcement: Yahoo has struck a deal with Broadway Video to exclusively offer Saturday Night Live content later this year.

Saturday Night Live

According to the announcement, the agreement between the two companies allows Yahoo to exclusively provide Saturday Night Live’s archive of video content from the last 38 years. Full video content from the current season will not be offered by Yahoo, but it will feature clips from the season, with Mayer specifically listing Coffee Talk, Wayne’s World, Coneheads, and Pat being among them.

The announcement doesn’t give us much more detail than that, simply saying that it will be available “across Yahoo!’s sites,” implying that it won’t be all aggregated in a single location. Mayer says that another announcement will be made once the video content is available, and we’ll be sure to keep an eye out for it, with more details to follow.

In other Yahoo news, we reported earlier today that Yahoo Japan and Softbank Capital have joined forces to create a $20 million fund aimed at helping U.S. startups get a foothold in the Japanese market. In addition, Yahoo Japan also appointed a new U.S. operations head, Toshiaki Chiku, who said that the Japanese market can be a hard place for US startups to succeed, but this program aims to change that.
