CNN Lets Wrongfully Accused Ricin Suspect Sing A Country Song On Air

The man previously accused of sending ricin-laced letters to President Obama and other politicians, Paul Kevin Curtis, dropped by CNN for an interview this week after the charges against him were dropped. Curtis is reported to have been an Elvis impersonator, but it seems country music may be his strong suit. He expressed happiness to be free but also an expectation that he may possibly be “thrust into the limelight” as a result of the public attention from the charges.

The CNN reporter added fuel to the fire by asking Curtis to sing a song. He chose Randy Travis’s “On the Other Hand” and burst into rousing rendition right there on air.

Check out the interview, above.

HTC: Nokia did not obtain an injunction against the HTC One

HTC has released an official statement regarding a recent press release stating that Nokia was granted a preliminary injunction against the HTC One. HTC stated that Nokia did not obtain an injunction against the HTC One, but instead obtained an injunction only against STMicroelectronics. STMicroelectronics is being sued for breaching an exclusivity agreement with Nokia by supplying HTC with the high amplitude mics that were exclusively designed for Nokia’s Lumia line-up.

HTC Nokia did not obtain an injunction against the HTC One

The microphone in question is the TD V1.4 high amplitude microphone that was supposed to be an exclusive to Nokia, but somehow found its way into HTC’s inventory in the Netherlands. While the mic is exclusive to Nokia, the Dutch court ruled, however, that HTC can continue to use the microphones it purchased for its products because “they were purchased in good-faith”. The court also ruled that STMicroelectronics is restricted from providing certain microphones to other companies other than Nokia for a 10-month period.

Nokia attempted to recall the microphones already sold to HTC, however, it was unable to do so. Nonetheless, HTC has stated that once it has used up its supply of the microphones, it will “transition to improved microphone designs”. This new official statement from HTC does clear up the previous press release from Nokia, which stated that,

“The Amsterdam District Court has today granted Nokia’s request for a preliminary injunction against the supply to HTC of microphone components invented by and manufactured exclusively for Nokia.”

Many of us assumed the injunction was against the HTC One because nowhere in the press release was “STMicroelectronics” mentioned. Nokia also ended the press release with,

“Once again, Nokia calls on HTC to compete using its own innovations and to stop copying from Nokia.”

Nonetheless, HTC is in the clear now, as the court ruled that it’s “blameless” because it couldn’t have known that those microphones were exclusive to Nokia. However, HTC still has to deal with the other injunction Nokia filed against it in Germany. HTC plans on appealing the injunction and also plans on proving that the patents that it allegedly infringed on are all invalid. You’ll all be happy to know that the HTC One will not be delayed and will remain available worldwide. Be sure to check out our review of the HTC One here.

Chicago Low-Wage Workers Strike, Demanding Fair Pay

CHICAGO — When Chris Thomas, 25, started working at the Nike store in downtown Chicago in 2008, he made $10.15 an hour — at least a few dollars short of what he’d need to move out of his parents’ house in Oak Park, Ill.

Over the next two years, his pay rose to $11.17. Then the store shut down for renovations and he and dozens of other workers were laid off. When it reopened last October, Thomas was one of the “lucky ones” who was rehired, he said on Wednesday.

“However, I didn’t feel so lucky when I heard I would be getting hired at the bigger, newer, more profitable store for less than I ever made before,” he said.

Dropcam Updates iOS Apps With Location Based Control And Time Scheduling

dropcam

Dropcam is updating their iOS apps today with two new features their users have been clamoring for: location awareness and in-app time scheduling.

Dropcam is a high definition plug-and-play security camera that has gotten some well deserved praise for its simplistic design and easy installation. Once your Dropcam is plugged into a power source, it automatically connects to your wifi connection. You can control the video feeds through your browser or your smartphone. It’s a painless setup, and pretty neat.

Dropcams can be controlled in the browser and through your smartphone app, so the updates are welcome news. With location aware toggling, Dropcam can now automatically turn itself on when you leave the house, and off when you’re back inside, by virtue of the GPS on your smartphone.

Another added feature is in-app scheduling, which allows you to select which times of the week you’d like your Dropcam to be monitoring your home. For example, if you were planning on going on a week long vacation, you could program your Dropcam to be on during that time in advance.

Dropcam is available at their website for $149. Their apps can be downloaded in the iOS App Store here.

Officials: Marathon Bombs Triggered By Remote

WASHINGTON — The homemade, pressure-cooker bombs used in the deadly Boston Marathon explosions were triggered by a remote detonator of the kind used in remote-control toys, U.S. officials said Wednesday.

The officials said investigators found pieces of the remote-control equipment among the debris and were analyzing them. Both U.S. officials are close to the ongoing investigation but spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss it publicly.

LGBT Couples Demand Equality In Immigration Reform

WASHINGTON — Gary Wanderlingh, who is American, and Samuel Conlon, who is British, were introduced online through friends five years ago. They felt a connection immediately, but they delayed meeting, they said, because they were nervous that if they fell in love, the law would prevent them from being together in the United States.

They were right. When they met, they said, it was love at first sight. They were married in Newtown, Conn., in 2011, when Conlon was in the U.S. on a three-month tourist visa. They applied for a spousal green card twice and were denied, and then rejected for deferred action on March 29 of this year. Now Conlon is living in the U.S. without authorization, despite being legally married to an American citizen, and the couple could be separated at any time.

They, along with some 35 other bi-national same-sex couples and representatives of the group Immigration Equality, visited Capitol Hill on Wednesday to urge passage of the Uniting American Families Act, which would give gay U.S. residents the same ability as others to help their partners and spouses to become legal residents as well.

This Is the Set-Top Box Amazon Should Make

It looks like Amazon is getting ready to enter the set-top box market. If so, the online retailer needs to go big or go home, because the competition is simply too intense for anything less than amazing.
