Comparing the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Galaxy S3

No matter you’re deciding if you should wait and get the Samsung Galaxy S4 next week, making sure you don’t have buyer’s remorse from just having purchased your Galaxy S3, or perhaps just plain curious, CNET makes it easy to compare the two sibling handsets with this chart.

Physically, the GS4 didn’t get any bigger. In fact, it even sports a thinner build and weighs a hair lighter. But with a slimmer bezel, its 5-inch full HD Super AMOLED touch screen had room to expand, and the display now sports a higher pixel density.[Read more]

Facebook Testing Chat Presence Dots In News Feeds

Facebook Testing Chat Presence Dots In News Feeds

Facebook is testing chat presence dots in the News Feed. These dots show the chat status of your friends, clicking on it will open up a message thread. This is presumably being done to provide a boost to Facebook’s online messaging service. The testing is only being conducted on desktop at this stage, chat dots have been rolled out to a limited number of users. It is a very convenient way of letting people know which of their friends are available to chat, but one can’t say for sure whether Facebook would roll this out for over 1 billion of its users.

The messaging niche is quite saturated as it is. There are popular cross platform solutions such as Kik, Viber and WhatsApp, platform limited solutions like BBM and iMessage. The green chat dots would serve as another reminder for users to see which of their friends are online, and would hopefully keep users tied to Facebook’s messaging service. Dots will be displayed beside status updates in the News Feed. It is not known as of now when Facebook intends to make these chat dots live across the network for all users.

Imagining a ‘Google Glass is half full’ world in 2016

Vassar computer science professor Greg Priest-Dorman dons Glass.

By the time the next presidential election rolls around in the United States, millions of us could be watching the results on our Google Glass. That might not seem crazy, being that the election will be only months after the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil, which will be broadcast, viewed, and shared by many via Glass.

This is only a snippet of what the near future could hold if predictions made by research firm IMS come true.

IMS’ most optimistic forecast finds that shipments of “smart glasses” — including Glass and similar products from competitors — could total almost 10 million worldwide over the next four years. The firm’s projections show big jumps in shipments, from 434,000 units next year to more than 2 million in 2015 and 6.6 million in 2016.

From now until 2015, IMS estimates shipments of smart glasses will be driven mostly by sales to developers, such as those who have been able to get their hands on the Google Glass Explorer Edition for $1,500 a piece. The firm predicts the success of Glass “will depend primarily on the applications devel… [Read more]

Lexibook Serenity Ultra Not A Name That Will Move Units

Lexibook Serenity Ultra Not A Name That Will Move UnitsLexibook of France has had their fair share of netbooks and tablets amongst other devices for kids in the past, and it seems as though the company also wants to cater to the other end of the spectrum, that would be senior citizens and those who are getting on in their age. Their latest outing in the tablet form is known fondly as the Lexibook Serenity Ultra, which is definitely something that you know the hip and happening younger folks would not touch it with a 10-foot pole at the checkout counter. Perhaps they might want to bury it under their mountain of purchases, only to explain themselves to the cashier without being asked that they’re getting the Lexibook Serenity Ultra for their grandfather.

The Lexibook Serenity Ultra will be an Android-powered device, sporting a far simplified user interface for easier navigation not to mention coming with large icon. The 7.9” display is good for 1024 x 768 pixel resolution, where it runs on a dual-core 1GHz processor, has 8GB of internal memory, a microSD memory card slot, front and back digital cameras, HDMI and USB ports, and a battery life of up to 5 hours. You will also find custom software such as an app for managing your schedule, language translation, and a digital comic app. After all, isn’t laughter the best medicine? The Lexibook Serenity Ultra is said to cost a whopping 300 Euros in France, with plans for a US release down the road.

UNL engineers develop new strong, yet tough nanofibers

An engineering team at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln have just developed a new nanofiber that is simultaneously tough and strong. Strength determines how well a material can carry a load, while toughness determines how much energy is required to break said material. Before, it was believed that you would have to sacrifice one attribute for the other, but the UNL team were able to prove that theory wrong. They discovered that by making nanofiber more thinner than it was ever done before, they could give the material not just more strength, but toughness as well.

UNL discover new material class of nanofiber

The team is comprised of Yuris Dzenis, the team’s leader as well as a McBroom Professor of Mechanical and Materials Sciences at UNL, and his engineering colleagues Dimitry Papkov, Yan Zou, Mohammad Nahid Andalib, Alexander Goponenko, and Stephen Z.D. Cheng. The National Science Foundation, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and the U.S Army Research Office Multidisciplinary University Research Intiative all provided the funding for the group’s research.

The UNL team developed the thin, polyacrilonitrile nanofiber using a technique known as electrospinning, where they applied high voltage to the synthetic polymer related to acrylic until a small jet of liquid ejected. This resulted in “a continuous length of nanofiber”. The team stated that while the strength of the nanofiber came from its thinness, its toughness resulted from the “nanofibers’ low crystallinity”.

Dzenis says that this new nanofiber could be used to transform anything made of composite materials. He stated that body armor, airplanes, bridges, bicycles and more could benefit from this new material. He used body armor as an example, and pointed out that in order for body armor to stop a bullet, it needs material that can absorb the bullet’s energy, which these nanofibers are capable of doing. He says,

“If structural materials were tougher, one could make products more lightweight and still be very safe.”

HTC insists Nokia’s injunction won’t affect the One’s current stock, new mics in the works

HTC Nokia's injunction doesn't apply to the One

In an email to press, HTC took the opportunity to make a few clarifications about the injunction filed by Nokia this week regarding the dual-membrane microphone in the One. The preliminary injunction claims that the high-amplitude mic, which HTC uses in its flagship device, was supposed to be manufactured exclusively for the Finnish company (and currently used in the Lumia 720). If you’ve been wondering how this particular action would affect sales of the high-end HTC handset, spokespeople assure us that it’s business as usual for the company. According to its official statement, the One is not the actual target of any injunction in The Netherlands — in actuality, the legalities of the matter are apparently only between Nokia and STMicroelectronics, the supplier of the component in question.

HTC tells us that Nokia’s attempts to institute a recall of the One failed; since the products were purchased in good faith, the ruling states that HTC can continue to use microphones that are in its inventory. Despite having a history rich in manufacturing delays, we’re told that this legal ruling will have no effect on the One’s availability. The Taiwanese phone maker plans a transition to “improved microphone designs” as soon as its current stock of STM supplies has been exhausted, a move which HTC claims will be transparent to consumers. Head below to see the full statement.

Real Life Mario Kart Drivers Spotted On Japan Freeway

Real Life Mario Kart Drivers Spotted On Japan Freeway

Over the years, we’ve seen people take their love for Mario Kart to the streets with even students at MIT joining in on the Mario Kart fun. But leave it to Japan to take something like a real-life Mario Kart and completely take it to the next level.

The two Mario Kart fans were spotted on the mean streets somewhere in Japan by a friend of Redditor justicefreedomlogic. Both “Mario” and “Luigi” were seen zipping down a freeway in Mario Kart-inspired vehicles that resembled the very karts both Mario and Luigi drive in their respective game series. Not only were their karts decked out in a Mario and Luigi paint scheme, but both drivers even dressed up as the iconic characters during their drive. (more…)
