Verizon GALAXY S 4 pre-order status adds to device launch fray

This afternoon Verizon has added details to their launch of Samsung’s hero device as each of the top mobile carriers in the United States make efforts to assure users that the device will be available relatively soon. This week has been marked by several delay reports coming from Samsung manufacturing affecting what at first appears to be one or two mobile carriers in the USA, but in the last 24 hours has spread to the bulk of them.

With the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S III, the manufacturer for the first time pushed their hero phone to multiple carriers with the same basic build. Where before that device Samsung revealed a slightly different model for each mobile carrier both inside the United States and abroad each time they had a major smartphone generation release, the Galaxy S III marked a change in plans. Have a peek at a column by the name of The Samsung Galaxy S III

Today it’s been reported that T-Mobile’s launch of the GALAXY S 4 will be delayed until April 29th for online sales. AT&T’s latest word is a confirmation that shipments for pre-order customers have begun to hit the mail while they’ll have the device in stores rather soon. Verizon has let it be known today that they’ll begin pre-orders online for the device tomorrow with the same pricing structure as AT&T (provided you’re willing to send in a $50 mail-in rebate) at $199.99 for the most basic model.

UPDATE: Verizon has now confirmed that their particular model will be in stores on the 30th of May. This places a very possible significant amount of time between in-store availability of each of the other carriers.

The Samsung GALAXY S 4 is outlined in detail in SlashGear’s full review, this review available to you as of midnight last night. We’ll be continuing to follow Samsung’s push for this device as it begins its battle against the likes of the HTC One and upcoming releases like the LG Optimus G Pro and any iPhone released by Apple this summer.

Call of Duty: Ghosts appears in retail promo ads

If history is any indication, then it’s quite clear that yet another Call of Duty game will be released this fall. However, we’ve yet to really hear any solid details about the new title. However, leaked box art and promo ads have shown up, with the title of the game being Call of Duty: Ghosts and a release date of November 5, 2013.

The box art first showed up on Tesco Direct’s website, but the listing has since been removed. However, a Target circular has also been leaked, which shows the title art of the game, with a release date of November 5, 2013 for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The promotion is for $10 off any game $49.99 or higher when you pre-order Call of Duty: Ghosts.

According to Charlie Intel, who obtained the leak, the new Call of Duty title is also expected to be announced “any day now,” according to their sources. While the rumored release date for the game seems more than plausible, retailers almost always use placeholders until they find out the official release date for a game, so November 5 may not be the actual release date.

We’re not sure if the title of the game is a reference to one of the characters in past Call of Duty titles, named Ghost, who is most-known for wearing that iconic skull-faced balaclava. If the game is, in fact, based around Ghost, it should be quite a doozy, as Ghost is one of the more favorited characters in the series. However, we’ll keep this with a grain of salt for now until we hear official word.

Invisiplug Helps Hide Your Power Strip With Wood Grain Patterns

Invisiplug Helps Hide Your Power Strip With Wood Grain Patterns

One of the biggest challenges any adult can face in their lifetime is how best to hide their power strips that they have sprinkled all over their home. Being able to suck power out of your wall for more than just two devices is a necessity these days, but power strips can certainly be an eye sore, especially if you have hardwood floors. We guess that’s why the Invisiplug was conceived.

The Invisiplug is a standard 6-port power strip, but instead of coming in a disgusting grey color, it comes in a number of realistic wood grain patterns. We emphasize these are patterns and not power strips that are made out of wood, which could certainly be cause for concern due to its potential to be a fire hazard. The Invisiplug is available in three different shades of wood grain patterns, making it a little bit easier to match with your hardwood floors. (more…)

This Is the Camera That Found Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

Law enforcement didn’t pull any punches during its manhunt for the Boston Marathon bombers, going so far as to lock down an entire metropolis while they searched. Even when officers thought they had the second suspect cornered in Watertown boat, they confirmed their suspicions with a camera that can spot people from up to 10 miles away. Just to be sure. Self-assembling foam chair expands like popcorn

(Credit: Noumenon)

This is a new kind of flat-pack furniture. There are no Allen keys, no screws, no scratching your head over Ikea-style instructions. Instead, Noumenon designer Carl de Smet‘s Memories of the Future furniture just needs a little loving warmth.

It’s made from shape memory polyurethane (SMP), a material invented by Mitsubishi Heavy Industry that expands when heated. This allows de Smet to manufacture the chair and squash it down to 5 percent of its size for packing and shipping. When the owner gets it home, it blows up like a balloon with the application of a little heat. This process takes roughly 10 minutes, et voila! There’s your chair.

The many faces of the self-expanding chair. (Click to enlarge.)

At the moment, that heat must be higher than 158 degrees Fahrenheit, so the furniture doesn’t start popping up like disastrous popcorn in the warehouse on a hot summer’s day. To affect even heating, at this stage, a controlled temperature box is required to expand the furniture.

However, de Smet is hoping to make the method of expansion more accessible to the av… [Read more]

Antimatter research at CERN turns up new vital clue

This week a new report has been published on the possibilities surrounding antimatter using clues provided by the Large Hadron Collider* at CERN. Within LHCb, one of seven such particle physics detector experiments at the Large Hadron Collider, decays of Bs mesons have been observed for the first time in history showing more matter particles than antimatter. This is significant because it may, eventually, lead science to understand the reason for our universe preferring matter as dominant over antimatter here in our present-day post-big-bang environment.

antimatter

The LHCb experiment is, again, one of several being run at CERN with the Large Hadron Collider. If you do a simple search for Large Hadron Collider in the SlashGear archives, you’ll find more information on CERN and the running of this machine than you could possibly know what to do with. Today’s subject surrounds Antimatter specifically.

There are now four different major studies being run around the world regarding antimatter relating to the findings being reported this week. The first of these comes from the LHCb once again and sees quarks (fundamental to our universe) turning up excess amounts of matter in what’s called CP violation. Another experiment at the LHCb that’s since been questioned as mistaken showed some of the earliest hints of this CP violation situation in the particles known as D0 mesons all the way back in 2011.

A third set of experiments – also working with mesons, have shown CP violation in two of the four meson types that exist with no electric charge. The fourth is, again this newest showing with Bs mesons. Spokesperson for the UK contingent of the LHCb collaboration Chris Parkes of the University of Manchester spoke this week to the BBC to let it be known how significant this experiment truly is.

“If one decays more often to this final state… than the other one, then it shows a fundamental difference between matter and antimatter. That’s what we’ve seen – a difference of about one in four of these decays.

However, the amount that we see is still compatible with the amount inside the Standard Model picture of particle physics, and this amount is just simply too small to explain why we’re all here, and why everything is still made of matter – so the puzzle still continues.” – Chris Parkes

The findings being shown this week are one in a line of what may eventually lead us to understand the fundamentals of the universe in a way that we’ve never before been able to grasp. For more information on why this is all worth the effort, be sure to hit up our recent article “here’s why it was worth it” – and note that it’s not the same experiment we’ve spoken about there, but the basic “why we spent this cash” reasons hold true!

*For those of you that’ve never heard of the Large Hadron Collider before, below you’ll find an excellent presentation by Don Lincoln for TED Education which explains how an atom-smashing particle accelerator works – let us know if it makes sense!

FreedomPop Announces Sprint-Friendly Hotspot For $40

FreedomPop Announces Sprint Friendly Hotspot For $40

FreedomPop recently set to upset the world of ISPs by offering free broadband Internet, which was a little too good to be true when we realized it would offer only 1GB of Internet service for free per month. It’s now setting its sights to the world of 4G Internet as they’re announcing their first hotspot.

FreedomPop’s Overdrive Pro is a $40 hotspot that features a dual-mode that allows it to use Sprint’s nationwide 3G network when WiMAX isn’t available and will allow its users to have 500MB of free wireless network access per month. For those data-hungry users who can’t get by on a measly 500MB of Internet service per month, FreedomPop offers a monthly 2GB plan for $20, which seems like a fair deal when you consider the first 500MB of a month will be completely free for you.

Customers who happen to already own a previous FreedomPop hotspot can upgrade to the Overdrive Pro by making a quick call to the company’s customer service. Considering this one will be able to connect to a wider range of wireless networks, we think it’s safe to say you should get to upgrading immediately.

Tumblr for iOS update brings Facebook, Twitter integration

Tumblr has been out like mad working on its mobile prowess over the past few days. After releasing a dedicated app for Windows Phone 8 yesterday, they’re back again with an update to their iOS app. Tumblr has added support for sharing blog posts to Facebook and Twitter, complete with third-party app support for apps like Tweetbot.

tumblr-ios

The updated app also includes the ability to save blog posts for later using read-it-later services like Instapaper and Pocket. Users can also email blog posts to friends and family using Tumblr’s all-new template. There’s also some new navigation tweaks, like swiping up or down to close photos, as well as added support for animated GIFs on the dashboard.

Overall, it’s not a huge update, but avid Tumblr users who take advantage of the app while on the go will appreciate some of the new features, especially if they’re all about sharing blog posts with friends. However, users will begin to be bombarded with mobile ads, so be prepared to see sponsored content show up in your feed.

The Tumblr apps for Android and Windows Phone 8 already allow for easy sharing of blog posts, but iOS users are now honored with the feature. Tumblr released a dedicated app for Windows Phone 8 yesterday, bringing lock screen and live tile support along with it, giving Tumblr users on Microsoft’s mobile platform a unique experience unlike iOS or Android.
