Google injects App Activities into search to push Google+ Sign-In

Google has rolled more Google+ functionality into search results, injecting app activity so as to give examples of user preferences alongside searches for sites and apps. The new feature will be rolled out to desktop search users “over the next few weeks”, Google says, and initially with a limited number of music and movie apps including Slacker Radio and Deezer.

There’ll also be Fandango, Flixster, Songza, SoundCloud, and TuneIn support from launch. However, Google says that more apps will be added “over time” in addition to other tweaks to the preview system.

Google is billing the feature as a way for potential app users to see how the software is actually used, with a glimpse into what existing users are doing expected to make it clearer as to whether it would actually be useful or not. So, if you search for SoundCloud, it will not only show how many followers on Google+ the app has, but show which particular audio has been most popular recently.

For movie apps, meanwhile, such as Fandango, there’ll be a list of popular films; clicking one will jump straight to that movie’s page in the app.

Of course, this is also designed to encourage more developers to add Google+ Sign-In support to their apps, the secure login system Google unveiled back in February. The system is similar to Facebook Connect, only attempting to make Google+ the ubiquitous credentials that log users in across the web.

Vine update brings support for front-facing camera, mentions

Couple of key updates for the 1.1 version of Twitter’s pithy video app, Vine. First up is support for front-facing cameras, for those who can’t get enough short web videos of themselves. Tap the icon in the lower-left corner of the app and it will toggle between your phone’s cameras. Also new is mention support, so those tagged with an @ will get a notification when you drop their names into a post. The latest version is available now from iTunes — perhaps a short video of you downloading the update is in order.

Samsung And Intel Throw Money In Expect Labs’ Way

Samsung And Intel Throw Money In Expect Labs’ WayIt has been reported that both Intel and Samsung are going to invest in a speech analysis company that is known as Expect Labs, in addition to Telefónica Digital, where Expect Labs’ technology is used to analyze and understand conversations in real-time, in addition to finding out related information. It cannot be denied that speech recognition is gaining more and more prominence among users of smartphones, tablets and computers, in addition to TVs, of course. Expect Labs also claim that the future might see connected devices that “will know who we are, understand what we say, and be far more capable of interpreting our intentions and anticipating our needs.”

One of Expect Labs’ already developed apps would be MindMeld, which is capable of analyzing a conversation, where it would then display related relevant pictures, videos and articles automatically. Right now, MindMeld is available over at Apple’s iPad, and is on its way to Android and other platforms sometime down the road. It would be interesting to see how the “injection” of dough would spur Expect Labs to greater heights.

First-Generation iPhone To Become ‘Obsolete’ In Apple Retail Stores

First Generation iPhone To Become Obsolete In Apple Retail Stores

While Donal Trump takes to his Twitter and Facebook profile to demand Apple create an iPhone with a larger screen, it looks like the company will soon be riding the original iPhone off into the sunset, according to a leaked internal Apple document.

The leaked documentation says the original iPhone, which debuted six years ago in 2007, will enter “obsolete” status starting on June 11, 2013. This means for those of you who still use the original iPhone, although we’d question why you’ve gone this long with its EDGE connection, won’t be able to have it serviced at Apple Stores around the world. Jawbone Purchases BodyMedia For $110M

Jawbone Purchases BodyMedia For $110MWhat does $110 million get you these days? Of course, you will end up with plenty of fast cars, large mansions, and for a company like Jawbone, it would mean acquiring another entity known as BodyMedia for that particular amount of dough. Just in case Jawbone sounds familiar to you, that is because they are the developer of Bluetooth headsets in addition to other kinds of wearable technology. Having picked up BodyMedia, a fitness monitoring company that is based in Pittsburgh for a reported $110 million, this acquisition clearly shows that Jawbone wants to force their way into the health and wellness arena.

BodyMedia is a company that was founded more than 15 years ago, and proved to be one of the very first companies to work on wearable body monitors which will help gauge physiological data, narrowing down on fitness. All data will be captured using its 24/7 on-body monitors, and it has been used by consumers as well as care providers to monitor behavioral changes in addition to weight control and the promotion of an active lifestyle. Jawbone’s acquisition would see them pick up BodyMedia’s 87 patents, which might come in handy in the long run. It would be interesting to see what else Jawbone will come up with sometime down the road.

First Website Ever Restored For 20th Open Web Anniversary

First Website Ever Restored For 20th Open Web AnniversaryToday is a very special day for some of us, where it could be a wedding anniversary, the day the love of your life proposed to you, or it could even be a bitter experience where a loved one passed away. Of course, on the tech front, in April 30 two decades ago, CERN opened up the World Wide Web to the masses on a royalty-free basis. In order to commemorate this 20th anniversary of a milestone in the life of the Internet, CERN has taken the step to restore the very first website.

CERN claims that this particular move will help “preserve the digital assets that are associated with the birth of the Web”, and as if to push forward their main point, CERN intends to have that particular Web address, info.cern.ch, to be “a destination that reflects the story of the beginnings of the web for the benefit of future generations.” Oh and by the way, CERN stands for the European Organization for Nuclear Research, which is actually an international organization which operates the world’s largest particle physics laboratory.

Driving Miss dAIsy: What Google’s self-driving cars see on the road

We’ve been hearing a lot about Google‘s self-driving car lately, and we’re all probably wanting to know how exactly the search giant is able to construct such a thing and drive itself without hitting anything or anyone. A new photo has surfaced that demonstrates what Google’s self-driving vehicles see while they’re out on the town, and it looks rather frightening.

google-car

The image was tweeted by Idealab founder Bill Gross, along with a claim that the self-driving car collects almost 1GB of data every second (yes, every second). This data includes imagery of the cars surroundings in order to effectively and safely navigate roads. The image shows that the car sees its surroundings through an infrared-like camera sensor, and it even can pick out people walking on the sidewalk.

Of course, 1GB of data every second isn’t too surprising when you consider that the car has to get a 360-degree image of its surroundings at all times. The image we see above even distinguishes different objects by color and shape. For instance, pedestrians are in bright green, cars are shaped like boxes, and the road is in dark blue.

However, we’re not sure where this photo came from, so it could simply be a rendering of someone’s idea of what Google’s self-driving car sees. Either way, Google says that we could see self-driving cars make their way to public roads in the next five years or so, which actually isn’t that far off, and Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk is even interested in developing self-driving cars as well. However, they certainly don’t come without their problems, and we’re guessing that the first batch of self-driving cars probably won’t be in 100% tip-top shape.
