Steampunk AT-AT is a labor of ‘Star Wars’ love

This AT-AT looks like it has emerged from the ocean.

When is an AT-AT not an AT-AT? When it’s Captain Bayley’s Infernal Mechano-Perambulator. The captain (also known as Mark), created a steampunk AT-AT out of a vintage toy. It’s the details that amaze.

You could get lost in the depths of this steamy tribute to the famous “Star Wars” machine. There’s a smoke stack blowing out fluffy clouds of fake smoke. The finish is done in a weathered-copper look. By golly, is that a lightsaber-esque unicorn horn on top of the nose? Mossy plant life hanging from the mouth makes this AT-AT look a lot friendlier than the killing machines from the movies.

Breakthrough: Order Pizza Hut from your Xbox

There it is. In social. Where else?

(Credit: Shockblast Media/YouTube Screenshot by Chris Matyszczyk/CNET)

It’s well-known that pizza helps gamers’ concentration. It allows them to shoot more accurately and endure more obdurately.

Pizza and gaming go together like fish and chips in England or plates and large portions in America.

Previously, though, whenever gamers had to order pizza, their concentration was destroyed. They had to use ancient machines, like their phones and laptops, to get that pepperoni knocking on their apartment door. In the name of progress, Pizza Hut and Microsoft decided to get together in a darkened room and chew over a new salvation.

Please, without letting go of your controls, welcome the Pizza Hut Xbox app.

As Polygon reports, the delight of this edifying idea is that you can link your Xbox account with your Pizza Hut account.

The World According to Tetris

Some of us are such video game addicts that we sometimes imagine the world as a sort of video game, IRL. That’s exactly what it looks like the artist behind this poster was thinking when he created this Tetris world map.

tetris world map

In this world map by artist Stephen Gowland of KIACO, continents and islands have been replaced with precisely interlocked Tetris bricks. What I love about this design is that they really are the proper shapes and colors from an actual game of Tetris.

tetris world map 2

I wonder how much work it took to figure out exactly which shapes to use for each part of the geography. I can’t imagine it was an easy task.

tetris map 3

The A3-size (~16″ x 12″) print of the Tetris world map sells for £10 (~$15 USD), while the A2-size (~23″ x 16″) version sells for £14 (~$22 USD). The artist says he can also print it in A1-size (~33″ x 24″), but you’ll want to check with him for pricing.

Only one problem I can see with this design… Shouldn’t the countries start vanishing as complete lines of bricks are stacked up to form them?

How the US Built Its Super-Secret Spy Satellite Program

Ethics aside, espionage is an indispensable part of statecraft. The ISR [Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance] information gathered helps steer national policy decisions for everything from mundane trade negotiations to the blackest of ops. And nowhere is this more evident than in the development of the US spy satellite fleet during the Cold War. These orbital telescopes granted an unprecedented peek over the Iron Curtain—revealing Soviet military capabilities, supply reserves, industrial sites, and more—that no ground-based spook could hope to provide. Refurbished iPad 2 And iPad 3 Prices Slashed By Apple

Refurbished iPad 2 And iPad 3 Prices Slashed By Apple

Apple has now slashed the prices of iPad 2 and iPad 3 models that it is officially selling on its online refurbished store. Such units can only be purchased online and won’t be found at any Apple Retail Stores. Prices have been slashed only for Wi-Fi plus Cellular and Wi-Fi plus 3G variants of these iPads.

The 16GB iPad 2 WiFi plus 3G model retails for $529, on the online refurbished store it can be purchased for $349. That’s a 34% saving, which in dollar terms, makes $180. The same variant with 32GB internal storage can be purchased for $429 and the one with 64GB storage can be purchased for $529. A brand new 16GB iPad 3 wih WiFi plus cellular model has a retail price of $529, from the online store it is available for $409 only. The 32GB and 64GB ones can be purchased for $499 and $579 respectively. These discounted prices won’t be available for long, they only last till stocks clear out. These prices do make up for a good deal, and if you’re holding out for the next generation iPad but still need an Apple tablet in the interim, the refurbished models are an excellent choice.

BlackBerry Patent Featuring Slider Smartphone Might Hint At BB10 Torch

BlackBerry Patent Featuring Slider Smartphone Might Hint At BB10 Torch

The BlackBerry Q10 has yet to be released in North America, but it looks like a new patent awarded to BlackBerry may very well hint at a new BlackBerry 10 device.

We’ve already seen the touchscreen-based BlackBerry Z10, the QWERTY-keyboard equipped BlackBerry Q10, but a new patent awarded to BlackBerry might hint at a new slider phone. The USPTO document was initially filed back in December 2011 and doesn’t go into detail as to what BlackBerry has planned for this device. Instead, it features a design for a device that looks like a BlackBerry Z10 with a physical keyboard tucked underneath the display, similar to BlackBerry’s Torch series of devices. (more…)

Minuum Android keyboard sparks crowdfund interest with one-row layout

This week a set of developers hoping to create a new way for users to use touchscreen-based keyboards have seem some significant success, finding 873% of their goal met in their first crowdfunded venture. The app environment these developers have presented is “Minuum Keyboard”, one created for Android devices initially, here showing off the entire English alphabet in a single row near the bottom of a smartphone or tablet screen. Having met their Indegogo goal several times over, they’re now headed for a June release for the software in beta.

afdsa

In an interesting twist to the original goals set out by the group, this project’s development was advanced past it’s first Android confines with a WDK as well. A WDK, or Wearable Development Kit, provides the user with a keyboard for many prospective devices. In the video presentation made by the creators of this project, you’ll see this keyboard typing with 3D motion control too.

The setup for the keyboard in its initial layout comes from the QWERTY setup you’re likely making use of on your notebook, smartphone, tablet, or desktop computer right this minute. Taking these letters and smashing them down into what’s essentially one row instead of three, the space which the keyboard would otherwise have taken up is reduced significantly.

What these developers are studying and banking on is the idea that users will be able to adapt as easily as they have to the simplicity of the layout they’ve created. While like riding a bike, you can get used to typing with such a setup, there’s still a learning curve that’s being dealt with. According to the funds this team has received in support of their development thus far, there are more than enough people out there willing to give Minuum a shot!

Let us know if you’re working with the standard on-screen keyboard on your smartphone or tablet and why. Did you know you were able to change the keyboard on your device before you read this post?

BlackBerry Q10 Releasing In Canada On May 1 For $199

BlackBerry Q10 Releasing In Canada On May 1 For $199

The road to release for the BlackBerry Q10 has certainly been a long one as it was introduced alongside the Z10 back in January, but BlackBerry has since stayed pretty tight-lipped in regards to the device. A release in Canada was first said to be expected in the “coming weeks“ earlier this month with a rumor circulating possibly having the Q10 release on April 30. It looks like that rumored release date was pretty close as BlackBerry has announced they’ll be releasing the BlackBerry Q10 starting a day later, on May 1.

Bell, Rogers and Telus will have the BlackBerry Q10 available for C$199 with a three-year contract and are currently accepting pre-orders, while smaller wireless networks like Fido, Koodo, Sasktel and Virgin Mobile will also have the device. As of now, there’s no word as to when the U.S. market will be getting their dose of BlackBerry Q10 goodness, but hopefully its release in Canada means we’re closer to its actual release.
