Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock Now Available For $299

Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock Now Available For $299

We caught a glimpse of the Belkin Thunderbolt Express Dock at CES 2012, and since then, the company has run the product through a redesign to make it appear a lot slimmer while also adding USB 3.0 ports to it. After much waiting, it looks like Belkin is finally ready to set its Thunderbolt Express Dock into the world as it’s now available to purchase.

As you probably already know, the Thunderbolt Express Dock comes with dual Thunderbolt ports with support of up to five Thunderbolt-supported devices, FireWire 800, Ethernet, a 3.5mm audio input and output and three USB 3.0 ports. Unfortunately, the eSATA and Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapter didn’t make it into the final product, although seeing how its now priced at $299.99 instead of its original price of $399.99, we’re sure many of you could certainly overlook those omissions. Acer Aspire V5 11.6-inch notebook leaked with $450 price tag, unexpected AMD Temash chip

Acer Aspire V5 11.6-inch notebook leaked with $450 price tag, unexpected AMD Temash chip

While AMD announced its new Temash APU (alongside others) at this year’s CES, the only device we’ve seen sporting it was an intriguing reference hybrid that made the rounds at the show. Now, details of an Acer Aspire V5 notebook have emerged, indicating the company is preparing its first Temash-powered device for general consumption. Acer already has a trio of Aspire V5 models with Intel Core processors and NVIDIA handling the graphics, but a half-complete product page for an unannounced V5-122P-0643 swaps those components out for AMD’s wares. Formally called the AMD A6-1450, the Temash APU combines a quad-core 1GHz processor — or 1.4GHz in “Turbo” state — with a Radeon HD 8280 GPU. When put into tablets, it has an unusually low, sub-5W power envelope that allows for passive cooling. While we don’t know exactly what wattage this Acer notebook will have, the presence of Temash should bode well for battery life. Head past the break for more details.

Intel and Samsung throw cash at Expect Labs’ smart Siri alternative

Intel and Samsung have invested in a startup company by the name of Expect Labs, which offers an alternative to Siri and Google Now, but the only difference is that the software constantly monitors users’ voices to deliver content in real-time, rather than delivering content on command like in Siri.

Siri-data-privacy

You’ve probably never heard of Expect Labs, but it’s a company that you should definitely keep your eye on. Intel, Samsung, and Telefonica all have invested in the small startup, and they join the likes of Google who have invested in the company in the past. Specific dollar amounts have not been disclosed as of right now.

The marvel behind Expect Labs’ Siri alternative is that the software constantly listens to and analyzes your conversations as they happen, and if it notices that you’re asking a factual question to a friend (like, “what time does the White Sox game start?”), it’ll pull up relevant information right at that moment without having to search for it.

Of course, it’s surprising why big companies are eyeing this kind of technology. More and more companies are getting into voice control software, and if it could offer something as revolutionary as what Expect Labs is cooking up, it could change the way voice control works. Of course, privacy is a big concern here, especially when the software listens in to your conversations at all times. Nonetheless, Expect Labs is looking to expand its team, and they didn’t go into detail as far as the future of the company, but it seems they have some big plans coming up.

Apple vs Samsung back in court November to re-calculate damages

Apple vs. Samsung will reconvene in November to recalculate jury damages, it’s been confirmed, with Judge Lucy Koh warning both parties to expect “Groundhog’s Day” in the courtroom. Apple had been granted $1.05bn in damages from Samsung last year, after a jury found the Korean company guilty of patent infringement with fourteen of its Android products; that figure was subsequently slashed, but questions around how the original jury considered each of the relevant patents forced a new damages trial that will kick off on November 12 2013.

There, Koh will preside over questions around the damages adjustments on those fourteen products, which she initially cut $450.5m from back in March, The Recorder reports. The hearing will, if Koh has her way, be the final step before Samsung can appeal the decision fully. “Once this is resolved,” she told the firms, “you can take all of it up to the Federal Circuit.”

In the period before then, Apple will have to submit a new expert report on damages – after having found a new damages expert – following which Samsung will have the opportunity to file a rebuttal expert report of its own. Expert discovery is expected to be completed by August 23, with a hearing and a pretrial conference scheduled for October.

“This is going to be Groundhog’s Day,” Judge Koh warned Apple and Samsung, suggesting that “you’re going to be reliving July of 2012.” The judge also refused to accept calls for a full retrial, insisting that the November case would be targeted specifically at damages based on the old information.

Although Samsung will be aiming to further trim its damages bill, it also faces the potential risk of an even higher cost. Just as the amount can be adjusted down, so could the jury decide to grant Apple even more than the $1.05bn originally imposed.

Non-Profit Group Wants to Clone Old Trees to Repopulate Forests

They’ve already done it with frogs and sheep, so what’s to stop them from doing the same thing with trees?

I’m talking about cloning and how some people in the scientific community are turning to it to repopulate the earth with species that were once abundant before humans and other factors came and endangered their existence.

Clone Trees

A non-profit group called Archangel Ancient Tree Archive is eager to jump-start reforestation programs of old trees before they become extinct. Described as group ”that locates and propagates the world’s largest and most iconic trees,” AATA will employ traditional and modern methods in the process.

The cloned trees will come from all over the world and will represent the “best” of old growth tree populations.

During this year’s Earth Day, the group planted and distributed redwood trees in Germany, Ireland, Wales, Great Britain, New Zealand, Australia and the United States. Now this is one application of cloning that I have no qualms about.

LeapFrog’s LeapReader pen teaches reading and writing, on sale in July for $50

LeapFrog's LeapReader pen teaches reading and writing, on sale in July for $50

With its latest device, LeapFrog’s continuing to fight the good fight: teaching kids essential skills through the power of consumer electronics. LeapReader’s a sort of spiritual successor to the company’s Tag line, maintaining the reading tool’s pen-like form factor, while adding writing to the equation. The device continues to read out words and sentences, adding in the ability to trace letters and write them out on its special paper. LeapReader encourages kids to trace the lines of letters and then try things on their own, after a couple of goes. The pen’s got enough space to hold 40 books or 175 songs, which can be played through an on-board speaker or via a headphone jack on top — and you can also play books purchased for your Tag device.

Interested parties will be able to pre-order the $50 LeapReader on June 12th. It’ll be hitting retail locations and LeapFrog’s site early the following month, with a few months to spare before back to school rolls around. The pen’s targeted toward kids aged four to eight (and, thankfully, is designed to only write on designated books) and will come in pink and green. Check out a demo video of the device after the break.

We were having beers and half-price burgers at my neighborhood bar when talk turned to an incredibly mean woman with whom we are acquainted.

Because I believe she treated a dear friend badly, harming his confidence like no one before her, I spewed the ultimate insult upon mention of her name:

You just know she wears ratty underwear, I said.
