Rick Heltebrake, Camp Ranger, Files Lawsuit For $1 Million Christopher Dorner Reward

LOS ANGELES — A camp ranger whose truck was taken by Christopher Dorner filed a lawsuit Monday for the $1 million reward offered for information leading to the capture of the rogue ex-cop believed to have committed suicide after killing four others during a rampage and manhunt.

Rick Heltebrake filed a breach-of-contract suit in Los Angeles County Superior Court claiming his call to the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department after Dorner ordered him and his dog out of the truck and fled on Feb. 12 directly led to Dorner’s hideout in a mountain cabin where he engaged deputies in a final shootout.

Square CEO questions value of Google Glass

Square‘s Jack Dorsey is keen on wearables but cautious on Glass, arguing smart glasses aren’t likely to offer legitimate value to wearers for another decade or so. “Glasses are very compelling and I think it’s an amazing technology” Dorsey told the NYTimes, “but I just can’t imagine my mom wearing them right now. What is the value of Glass?”

While augmented reality wearables like Google’s headset are technically impressive, Dorsey expects more mundane examples of body-worn gadgetry to do better in the mass market. Part of that, the mobile payments service founder suggests, is due to the fact that tech you wear on your wrist can be associated more readily with geek-jewelry.

“I think the movement you see around Fitbit, Up and FuelBand, that seems to be the next step in wearable” he argued. “So something on the wrist that feels natural, almost feels a bit like jewelry.”

Some have taken Dorsey’s apparent affection for smartwatch-style tech as an indicator that Square will explore an app for such gadgets, potentially allowing for payments to be made without having to pull your phone out of your pocket. Square is best known for the credit card swipe dongles that plug into iPhones and iPads; however, the company has also been exploring other, less traditional methods of customer recognition, including geofenced apps that flash up the user’s face on the cashier’s terminal, allowing them to be recognized in a more passive manner.

For Glass to fit into daily use, Dorsey suggests, the technology will need to assimilate more readily, as well as potentially give the market time to come to terms with a computer on your face. “I think it might be a 10-year answer, but not in the next five years” he concludes. “Maybe if they’re in sunglasses or what not.”

CERN celebrates 20 years of a free, open web by restoring world’s first website

CERN celebrates 20 years of a free, open web by restoring world's first website

The web as we know it was famously invented by Tim Berners-Lee while working at CERN, but it wasn’t until a few years later — 1993 to be precise — that it’d truly be set free. On April 30 of that year, Berners-Lee’s then employer would make the technology behind the WWW available license free, bundling a basic browser and some key chunks of code into the deal. To commemorate the 20th anniversary of this event CERN has recreated the first ever website, complete with its original URL. The preservation doesn’t stop at copying over some old files, either, with CERN also looking to preserve the first servers used, restoring as much as possible to its original state. Beyond a little geeky nostalgia, the project hopes to safeguard the web’s earliest days, before it became the ubiquitous phenomenon it is now, so that future generations can enjoy (and scoff) at the web’s origins. Best of all, no drawn-out field trip is required to enjoy the spectacle, you can see it just as nature intended by heading to the source.

Blackberry CEO Rumored To Share Tablet Plans On 15th May During Blackberry Live

Blackberry CEO Rumored To Share Tablet Plans On 15th May During Blackberry LiveWord has it that Blackberry 10 is expected to eventually make its way onto the Blackberry Playbook tablet, but with tablets being extremely popular devices, with some even calling them PC replacements, will Blackberry be content with just the Playbook? According to a tweet by investor Antonio Costa, it seems that Blackberry might have other tablets in the works and that Blackberry’s CEO, Thorsten Heins, could be giving us some details about them come 15th of May during the Blackberry Live event.

We guess it wouldn’t be a shocker if Blackberry had plans for additional tablets. After all the hardware of the Playbook can be considered dated, especially when compared to more modern tablets such as the Google Nexus 7, Amazon Kindle Fire HD and of course Apple’s range of iPads. We’re not sure what Heins will reveal, if he does at all, but if you’re curious to see what sort of future tablet devices Blackberry might have planned for the future, check back with us on the 15th of May for the details.

Nokia Announces Event On 9th Of May In India

Nokia Announces Event On 9th Of May In IndiaWe know that Nokia has announced an event on the 14th of May and it will be unveiling the Finnish company’s new Lumia device, presumably the Lumia 928, or “Catwalk” as it is codenamed. It could even be the rumored 41 megapixel Lumia phone that has been making its rounds. Either way the event is expected to take place in London, but interestingly it seems that Nokia has also announced another event, with this event taking place before the 14th of May.

It seems that Nokia has sent out invites to an event that will be held on the 9th of May, although in this case this particular event will be held in India. We’re not sure what this event will be about or what sort of devices we might be able to see, but considering that Nokia’s CEO, Stephen Elop, did state that the company had plans for new Lumia and Asha devices, and with India being one of the emerging markets prime for Nokia’s Asha lineup, we’re guessing this announcement might have more to do with Asha offerings rather than Lumia ones. In any case check back with us on the 9th of May for the details.

Instagram And Temple Run 2 Rumored To Be Announced Alongside Nokia Lumia 928

Instagram And Temple Run 2 Rumored To Be Announced Alongside Nokia Lumia 928We’ve heard rumors that Instagram, Temple Run 2 and other apps could be making its way onto Windows Phone, but when exactly will that be happening? Well according to the folks at WMPoweruser, they claim that through one of their sources at Microsoft, they have learnt that those long-awaited apps will finally be announced and launched once Nokia and Verizon officially announce the Nokia Lumia 928. The Lumia 928 is rumored to be an exclusive phone designed for Verizon and could come with an aluminum body, a first for Nokia’s Windows Phone lineup which will hopefully appeal to those who feel that polycarbonate is too “cheap”. Considering that the previous rumors have pegged the launch of these apps in May, and with the Lumia 928 also rumored for a May announcement, it certainly coincides with each other. However until we actually see or hear it for ourselves, we suggest you take it with a grain of salt for now.

First ever webpage restoration underway on 20th anniversary of open WWW

CERN may be best known for its hunt for the Higgs Boson, but a team at the organization are also tracking down internet history, working to restore the first ever website to its original URL and server. The project, which will see the European Organisation for Nuclear Research restore World Wide Web founder Tim Berners-Lee’s first page to info.cern.ch, requires rebuilding the site pretty much from scratch, as no screenshots of the original exist.

world_wide_web_original_browser_screenshot

Making the challenge even harder is the fact that the site itself was an evolving project, not a stable page, as Berners-Lee and his WWW team updated it as the user-friendly web developed. Since then, the URL has been used for more general information about Berners-Lee’s work.

“For a start we would like to restore the first URL – put back the files that were there at their earliest possible iterations. Then we will look at the first web servers at CERN and see what assets from them we can preserve and share. We will also sift through documentation and try to restore machine names and IP addresses to their original state” First Website Project, CERN

The first page of the new project to go live is info.cern.ch/hypertext/WWW/TheProject.html, which has been restored using a 1992 copy of the original site. “This may be the earliest copy that we can find,” CERN says, “but we’re going to keep looking for earlier ones.”

CERN will also look to restoring the NeXT computers that first hosted Berners-Lee’s site, and is currently researching information from specialists familiar with the machines. Back in 1993, however, the route that the internet finally took was far from concrete: there was apparently fierce discussion around whether the technology should be released as an open standard, something eventually signed into being on April 30.

Toshiba Canvio Connect Announced

Toshiba Canvio Connect AnnouncedToshiba has just announced their Toshiba Canvio Connect portable external hard drive which will be very different from past Canvio releases, in the sense that this external hard drive will also let you access as well as share files straight from the device itself. This would clearly make it the first of its kind in the market, where you can carry up to 2TB of external storage space in a slim and compact form factor, and for fashionistas, Toshiba has got your back covered too, as it will come in several different colors, ranging from black to silver, blue, red and white.

Imagine performing a back up of all your videos and photos straight from compatible smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices which are able to run Toshiba Storage’s iOS or Android app. In a nutshell, as long as the Toshiba Canvio Connect remains hooked up to an Internet-enabled PC which remains powered on, users can remotely access the entire gamut of their files, photos, music and movies from any device, regardless of their geographical location. Toshiba will entice curious onlookers by throwing in 10GB of free cloud storage for storing “always available” copies of important files. Out later in the middle of May, the Toshiba Canvio Connect will come in 500GB, 750GB, 1TB, 1.5TB and 2TB capacities, retailing for $99, $109.99, $129.99, $169.99 and $189.99, respectively. Wacom Cintiq 22HD Touch Announced

Wacom Cintiq 22HD Touch AnnouncedWacom has just announced yet another tablet of theirs, which would come in the form of the Wacom Cintiq 22HD touch. All right, so 22” might seem a tad too large for it to be called a tablet, but do let me have the liberty of calling it that for the moment. This 22” pen display would feature multi-touch functionality, which is somewhat familiar to those who have spotted the Cintiq 24HD that was launched not too long ago. What makes the Cintiq 22HD touch special apart from its multi-touch functionality would be a 1920 x 1080 full HD resolution LCD display, 16.7 million colors gamut, 16 configurable ExpressKeys, an adjustable stand as well as the Cintiq pen to help you get digitally creative. Needless to say, the inclusion of tactile capability would mean the entire shebang is more expensive with a final sticker price of $500, as Wacom readies the Cintiq 22HD touch to hit the market later this May.

With the Wacom Cintiq 22HD touch, users are able to work with digital tools, albeit in a natural and intuitive manner as the multi-touch capability would be able to support gestures for rotating canvases, assist you in zooming images in and out, the works. Got to love Wacom’s professional-level pen performance (2,048 levels of pressure and tilt sensitivity) which is more than capable of producing dazzling artistic effects within creative software applications.
